    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    The fellowship races to the fortress on the mighty fire mares.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Meant to be a whimsical sword-and-sorcery film about a prince out to save his princess from the jaws of the Beast, Krull has enough scenes borrowed from blockbuster predecessors (Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Robin Hood, Star Wars) and is gentle enough to be rather derivative, ordinary fare. Prince Colwyn (Ken Marshall) has inherited a kingdom under siege by the evil Beast, and not only has to rid the land of the monster, but he has to rescue his bride Lyssa (Lysette Anthony) from the Beast's clutches as well. In his magical land, horses can sometimes fly, medieval castles can harbor weapons that light up, and before he can defeat the Beast, the prince has to get his hands on the glaive (French for "double-edged sword"), a razor-sharp, magical weapon capable of killing the monster. One of the more notable aspects of Krull is that a 30-year old Liam Neeson plays the bit part of Kegan, in only his third full-length feature film.

      Couldn't agree more, this movie is LEGIT, absolutely LOVE it and this scene always makes me grin like a fool (just like them, the expression of pure joy on their faces as they're riding the fire mares, wicked cool). At 0:28 a horse nearly stumbles on the tread mill and the actor looks down in concern but plays it off. This was filmed with the horses on a tread mill with a blue screen background of course, I find this scene amazing and fun, Liam nursing’s, and the wizard nearly falling of the horse, and the guy from braveheart.

    A marvelous choice in the music at 1:10. Instead of going to a big crescendo as they leave the ground, the music actually softens a bit. The lighter and airier feeling it takes on suits the moment of lifting into flight perfectly in this case.

    Producers/Director, "Well, the gang are travelling about 500 mph on a pack of blazing stallions, and then suddenly they go off a cliff edge, but then they start to fly."
    James, "Hmmm...so they have wings?"

    • @adsilcott
      @adsilcott Před 6 lety +1

      The music fits so perfectly that I've often imagined this very discussion! That and another from James Horner's early days:
      James: "So this is a Star Trek movie? So a space theme?"
      Director: "Yes, but I want to play up the nautical aspect of it. Star Fleet is essentially the Navy in space. The battles will be like classic navel ship battles."
      James: "Okay, I got this."
      Seriously go and Listen to the soundtrack to Wrath of Khan, it could totally be the soundtrack to Master and Commander or some other seafaring movie! James Horner was really good at matching the feel of the movies!

    • @stevenwatchorn9816
      @stevenwatchorn9816 Před 5 lety +2

      It was a great decision to make the music softer and smoother once the mares took flight, instead of ramping it up even more. The lightness in the score mirrors how they must feel flying through the air. Very astute choice by Horner and the filmmakers.

    Krull (1983) was one of the best post-Star Wars "rescue the princess" fantasy sci-fi movies, combined with Willow (1988). Some rudimentary special effects, but both great story telling. Well worth a rainy Sunday afternoon double-feature. The Lord of the Rings trilogy owes a lot to these movies.

    "Krull" often transcended its modest production values in scenes of pure wonder, often in large measure thanks to Horner's astonishing music... and nowhere better than here. I can't think of ten scenes in fantasy films more beautiful than that distant view of our heroes and the horses trailing flames into the sky.
