Hey V, I forgot to also mention that when Robert said "I'm sorry" after Slavi died, he was apologizing to his wife for being the killer he formerly was. He had gotten out of the "business" because of his love for her. After she died he couldn't sleep until he could somehow eliminate the sources that hurt people physically and emotionally thus easing his own pain of losing her. That's why I can bond and identify with him like so many of us do. I hope you watch E2 and E3 soon. You're in my top 3 reaction channels.❤

Hi Verowak. Based on an incredible TV series in the 80s. The opening montage gives you the feel for the series. When the sun sets, the big city becomes terrifying. Innocents stalked and terrorized by evil. Lurking in the shadows was The Equalizer played by the late Edward Woodward, Robert McCall was an avenging Guardian Angel who helped, protected or avenged the innocents. He made you feel safe. I survived many a scary nights coming home late from work by remembering McCall’s life lessons to stay safe. Trust your guts. Stay in the light. Avoid shortcuts in dark alleys. Pay attention. Walk away from potential trouble. Denzel also made you feel safe. His character here a role model. The way he was in the kitchen, keeping his world in order, and the way he was with the people he worked with, I followed his example. The tagline in the series, “Odds against you? Call The Equalizer”.

Throughout his career Denzel Washington has not done a sequel to any of his movies. He has always said there wasn't anything else to do with the character. Granted, a lot of his movies the characters die. After he did The Equalizer, he made two sequels and yes, they are totally worth watching.

The online bit at the end - "Odds Against You? Nowhere To Run?" is a direct callback to the original 1980s TV series. In that, the Equalizer had a regular newspaper ad titled with that, which was people in trouble found him, usually.
The original Equalizer was played by British actor Edward Woodward. He looked like a senior bank manager, but could switch on the scary extremely well. The premise was the same - former superspy helping people with nowhere else to turn. As here, he would usually give a choice to the Bad Guys, that being to back off (sometimes, a deal would be included) or take the consequences. Inevitably, the Bad Guys would refuse to compromise or back off, whereupon the Equalizer would systematically take them, their business and, often, their entire organization completely apart.
I feel like, in his old job, this was a guy who took down entire governments.
Denzel's character portrayal is quite different, but he captures the spirit of the show brilliantly.

YES! You’re the only Equalizer reactor I have seen so far who noticed and commented on that tiny but, in my opinion, important detail of Robert finally having a good, sound sleep after what he did at that Russian nightclub.
As with many things in art, that can be interpreted in various ways. For me, it shows he felt good and even somewhat at peace because he felt he finally became himself again, even for just a few moments. Like he said to Alina: ‘The old man’s gotta be the old man; the fish has gotta be the fish. Gotta be who you are in this world, right?’ This interpretation, I think, also goes with that Mark Twain quote at the beginning of the film, and with what Susan said about Robert paying her a visit to get permission to go be *him*.

I loved the original TV show, I think this was a good origin story for a reboot or remake. The original character was already a little old in the 80s, so this would have to be a new version of Robert.
The original show was based on someone who went helping people in desperate situations, so the last "Can you help? Yes" was basically the connection.

_Maybe_ my favourite of the "geriaction" subgenre (not sure Denzel even qualifies here since he was still in his 50s when this came out - albeit only just - _and_ is very well preserved) though "Taken" is good too. McCall's a pretty interesting character IMO, with his OCD and his regrets (and refreshingly for an action franchise, they don't pull away from that as the series progresses, the reverse if anything).
(and the original series, starring Edward Woodward as McCall, has one of my all time favourite 80s TV themes by Stewart Copeland from 'The Police')

obert McCall in this version is a former MARSOC (Marine Special Operations) turned ISA (that is like CIA Special Operators) who faked his death to leave that life behind to honor his wife's dying wish. When your body is stressed, it goes into flight or fight mode. high levels of cortisol and adrenaline are released into the blood stream causing you to perceive time as slowing down. This is really your brain processing sensory input faster. With the right training and experience you cannot just react faster but think in a controlled manner. This is what the camera is trying to explain quickly. Honey has antimicrobial healing properties and has been used for thousands of years for healing.

besides the original series, the franchise also includes a reboot series with queen latifah as Robyn McCall. It's pretty good, though i suspect some executive meddling to balance out some plots lifted straight from real world corruption

Awesome reaction. I very rarely watch movie reactions, but I think I'm going to watch more from you. I watched Equalizer series when I was child, and I fricking love all of these movies. This first one is probably my favorite, but I don't want to spoil, so I won't tell you anything about them. They are definitely worth to watch.

When you spend the great majority of your adult life in military or intelligence service then it ends, you wish to rejoin the normal of humanity but aren't really sure it is possible, especially if you feel that you must continue to help humanity and atone for all the things you have done that turned out to be a misuse of your talents for crooked politicians. This story makes it seem like a gift from God to find the wish and feel like you belong there with someone capable to take over helping people.

I like comparing Robert Mccall with John Wick. The difference is that John is a character from an action movie in an action movie but Robert is a character from a horror movie inserted into a thriller. For John, killing is mainly a means to an end, a tool, while Robert savors it. Sure its still for a good cause so to speak but he really does savor it. My opinion at least. And yes the other 2 are GREAT, the third is the best and AMAZING.

31:01: that one line from you Verowak made the entire reaction video complete! “The Name’s Bob… Bob the Builder”. Lmao Perfect timing and perfect execution! And it all still fits the narrative in the film too! 😂😂😂❤❤❤ thank you 🙏🏾! Plus all 3 films are good, which tends to be 50/50 for highly popular, large budget franchises, but yeah all 3 are good, solid movies. Now it more of a personal preference of which one is better; for me all 3 are actually equally good(overall), but for certain elements I do like the 2nd film more than the others, while the 3rd’s ending was better than the first films-- again, imo. ❤
