    Just picked one up and I am super impressed by it. If it holds up and lasts then I think it will be one of my best outdoor/camping gear purchases ever.

    The pad appears to be very cost-to-quality efficient. We are still rocking our Klymit Static V's... love the side baffles. This would be a great option to those however. Thanks for showing it to us!

    You and Darwin onthetrail have inspired me to go on my first solo overnight hike tomorrow. Been camping a lot but never hiked. Dipping my toes in with a short 13 miles. Base weight came in at 13lbs as I'm just taking gear I already owned. We'll see in the future if I go the true ultalight route!

    Great videos, Sintax77! I really enjoy your hike videos and budget gear reviews. Section hiking the AT is something I want to start doing with my boys. They are 8 and 10 now. Not quite sure they are ready, but we're doing some day hikes. These budget gear reviews are extremely helpful since I'll have to outfit 3 people. Happy Hiking!

    I think you're thinking of the Thermarest Prolite- A self-inflating pad which is about 2+ inches thick and weights 20+ ounces (at least mine does). It has memory foam and doesn't pack down as small as a nalgene. The better comparison size-wise would be the Thermarest NeoAir X-Lite which is 12 oz and packs as small (or smaller?) than the Unigear. The big difference between the Unigear and NeoAir Xlite would be price obviously (Thermarest NeoAir X-lite comes in over $120+) , weight and R-Value. Thermarest NeoAir X-Lite has an R-Value of 3.2, the Prolite is 2.4 and the Unigear is 1.5. X-Lite wins on warmth to weight ratio... and of course you pay for that.

    I got the Outdoor Vitals insulated pad when I bought thier pillow that you reviewed. Only did a quick one night camp out with it and it's the most comfort I ever had on the trail. I ditched the bag pump it comes with it, I just blew it up with my mouth. Go the extra tall/wide one, probably gonna order another one for my wife.

      I used that pad out in Utah I loved it too. It's a great option for anyone looking for something thicker and willing to spend just a little bit more. I actually linked it as a thicker option in my vid description :)

    Mine has now developed a leak unfortunately. It hasn't seen a huge amount of use and I have looked after it, so I bit annoyed. Will try to repair it or buy the newer version.

    22" is wider than most pads, do you happen to know how manufacturers determine R value or how they measure it

    Id br curious to see if the valve is compatible with the shnozzel pump bags some of the other manufacturers are selling now. Hate blowing wet air into my pads

    I live in Australia and generally just use a straight single layer hammock with no insulation for sleeping as it sometimes only gets to 30C during the night in Summer, this sleeping pad would be great as a redundancy for if the weather makes a cold turn to put inside your hammock for insulation 🤘

    Amazon, just delivered mine! I found it very comfortable, i am 6'1, 300lbs. When i first saw and relized how thin it was i said oh crap this won't work, but i was wrong. Its fine for side sleeping or back. Because of width and low profile, i didn't feel like i would fall off. Only complaint its slick like all sleep pads are. I would actually call it sleeping mat. I travel a lot sometimes i don't know if I'll have a bed so it will be using this as my emergency back-up sleeping pad. Good bye static v2! Oh yes love the valve system and thanks for the stuff sack tip.

      We used a tent in 2016 for our trip to Wyoming. It worked good because of the lack of trees in the higher elevations. The cheap Walmart pads sucked! lol I always trust your reviews more than others so we will order items through your Amazon links. It has been extremely wet in Michigan this week with the flooding. The backpackers must hate it since so many are in the area for our fall near peak colors.

    I bought a self-inflatable military pad on eBay (says it’s a Thermarest and only $20) but it’s only about 35 mm thick fully inflated. It’s great for warm weather in a hammock but I don’t know about as the mercury drops.

    • @SoCalDaveL
      @SoCalDaveL Před 5 lety +1

      you're always better off with an underquilt in a hammock than a sleep pad as they tend to move around.

    Where was this review last spring? Sounds similar to the Trekology sleep pads I bought only they are 3 inches thick with a pump bage, a bit noisy and my husband complains about slipping down or off the mat in his mummy bag (won't fit inside). Did you run into either of those issues with the uni-gear?

    this is the kind of item I do not have, I just have a standard twin air mattress that blows up to 8 inches ans is very bulky and a yoga mat I put under it. I would still put a foam pad under this one for extra protection against punctures

    you mentioned "stacking" the pads in the winter. would you ever stack a hammock? I have the double layer chameleon, would there ever be a time to use the pad in there WITH the under quilt below it all???? I'm talking winter camping in the Catskills.

    • @sintax77
      @sintax77  Před 5 lety +1

      I've never done that personally, but I've definitely read trip reports from hammock campers who have done just that for additional warmth in winter.

    • @sintax77
      @sintax77  Před 5 lety

      Now that I've invested in underquilts - No. I wouldn't use any pad in a hammock instead of a quilt system. I've used them for a while prior to that though and it wan't the end of the world. They're an excellent way to get started on the cheap. Now days I just use them for ground sleeping trips.

      If I can throw my 2 cents in, I use a static v luxe in my hammock year round and my underquilt in cooler months. I sleep better with the inflatable pad (not the foam ones) in the hammock. It seems to help with shoulder squeeze. To each his own.
