Ultra Budget Winter Mat with ASTM verified R Value
Vložit
- čas přidán 2. 10. 2021
- Today I test out a new sleeping pad that has been highly rated by a Canadian CZcamsr for its comfort, quality and warmth. it isn't the highest R Value mat you are going to find but it has been legitimately tested using the ASTM system for R Value in sleeping mats unlike a lot of cheap competitors that state an R Value without proving it or having any kind of regulated test. I will be using this pad in the coming winter months alongside my foil mat to bump up the R value and give a long term review then but for now it seems as great pad with high levels of comfort and for £37...... cant be beaten! Buy it here if you want, this is an affiliated link. This is the XL version (of course) and weighs less than they state so you could save yourself some more weight if you can get away with the smaller one.

This is the best mat i have ever got! I have the top range thermarest one but this unigear one is just outstandingly comfy and so warm. I have used it on my last 3 camps and i know the thermarerst mat is now redundant. The lumber section really really does work! Fantastic product!
That's great to know Niall. Thanks for the comment, I'm looking forward to getting it out in the winter 👍
I'm 57 now.
Camped ever since I was 10 years old.
In all that time I have never once used an air mat or any kind of mat at all. Rain snow hail or blow, I just kip on the ground.
I've never felt the need to carry uneccessary bulk when I can get something else in instead.
Alas, after 47 years, I'm starting to feel the aches n pains these days, so I caved in and began looking for a cheap and extremely compact air mat.
You're video convinced me this is the one.
So off I toddled to Univears website, only to find they've practically doubled the price.
This mat is £56 now.
I'm gonna need a lot more aches and pains before I cave in now.
Appreciated the review though. It does look ideal for my needs.
You have a new subscriber Sir.
Thanks buddy. It is a good mat but like everything, its gone up in price and doesn't help the £ is poor against the $ at the moment. Still a bargain for the comfort though 👍
I have just bought this because of you it's all your fault! 😂 Cheers for another great review buddy!
😂 sorry, I blamed lonewolf 902 when I ordered mine 🤣
It’s Michaels fault that I like a certain type of coffee now........🙄😂😂
@@soomay9855 yay I'm an influencer 🤣
@@NoviceWildCamper 🙄 coffee yes - instant noodles NOPE 😂
😂 don't knock it till you try it, soba ones anyway 👍
Nice review. I suffered the same Trekology issue and couldn't be arsed with the drama of trying to find the leak or asking for a replacement. I don't like the idea of more landfill being created because a company didn't put enough effort into R&D or testing. With that i've taken your word for it and ordered one of these.
Hopefully it will arrive with enough time for a few more camps on Dartmoor before the weather is beyond my kit. I'll probably back this up with a cheap foam/foil matt underneath to hopefully make it last longer and keep me warmer.
Cheers marc. I used it last night as well and although not a cold night I could feel the warmth from it do it's definitely going to help. Yeah the trekology guys are great at sending out new ones but it's no good if you're stuck on the moors with no bed under you. Someone I know had six sent to him and every one failed. Personally I couldn't give them 6 chances to sort themselves out.
You have taken words out of my mouth about UL 80 my one arrives Saturday I’ll trying out on Dartmoor with foil Matt
I'm all about the grams
Ultra light is my kinda camping... But I'm only slim with little fat on me! I've had a Klymit v2 static for a few years... and freeze most nights (in spring)!! It's light but completely useless. This could be the upgrade I've been looking for 🤔 👍
It's not the lightest but its an incredibly comfortable mat and warm 👍
Looks pretty good that to be fair Mike, and lonewolf 902 sure knows his stuff, I've followed him for a long time now. Hopefully that will do well for you through winter 👍 keep up the good work buddy, atb Paul 🙏🏕️🏕️🏕️😁
Cheers buddy. Got be better than my zero r mat 😂
been on the fence for a while on this one but yours is the third non affiliated good review on this pad so im willing to try it.thanks for taking the time.$79 canadian this side of the pond
Thanks David. To be honest I've not used any other pad since buying it. Great piece of kit soecially for the money. Very comfy and a decent pack size if a lottle heavy but I have the xl version so it's going to be. Oddly enough, unigear contacted me last week asking me to review more of their stuff so keep an eye out for upcoming vides. These ones will be sent free of course bur I'll still be honest. Cheers for watching and commenting. 👍
I was looking forward to your review. This is a tempting proposition. It is budget friendly and if you are someone who is either new to wild camping or only do a few trips out in the winter this mat seems to tick many boxes. Certainly more compact than a R zero coupled with a CFC mat (which is what I have got at the moment). Cheers
Exactly, that's what I had last year so looking forward to trying it out in the winter 👍
Looks decent for the money , comfortable too ,another one done and dusted 👍
Cheers buddy 👍
Ok… I’ve purchased one. Looking forward to giving it a go. Can’t complain with the price.
It's a good mat. Not as high rated as some but for the price can't be beaten and so comfy 👍👌
So just blew mine up 1st time, around 22 pump sack fills, so agree, need an alternative Santa if your listening maybe a little pump. Seemed very comfy on side. When on my back with lumbar section in the lower curved part of my back, felt supportive but little discomfort in that my back felt it was was being pushed forward, worried this may hurt my back over night. Or is this just because my back is being supported where its not use to it, and its actually doing my lower back some good ? Also had to re-watch end of this video as had mare trying to roll up, I never realised you flipped out inner seal, so I was roll, lean forward, stick finger back in hole, roll repeat repeat. But you have solved my stupidity. Excellent mat.
Yeah pull the flap out and it goes. My only gripe is the pump sack. It's too small to be of any use. I've got the flextail and it takes seconds. Literally. If you watch my last video you'll see how quick it is. Mine is the pro 2 version just come out. You're right about the lumbar support. They always feel uncomfortable when you first use them but it sort of shows how youre not laying right in the first place. I suffer with really bad lower back problems. Two collapsed discs and I really feel the benefit in this. Its like a mat I use at home when my back is killing me. 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper excellent, and flextail a hunting I go. Yes I noted it on your last vid very fast.
Nice review. Thank you for sharing. You have a wonderful upcoming week
Thanks buddy 👍
Just used your code, it actually took it to a few pennies below the free shipping but thankfully they seem to use the original price for that (not all companies do)
10-20 days shipping so will see! Hopefully I won't get canned by import charges.
Shouldn't do. I didn't get any when I bought it. I think it had to be over a certain amount like $130 or something. Its a great mat. Currently my favourite. 👍
Great review Michael. I haven't tried my Trekology replacement yet after the first one left me feeling deflated! Not holding much hope for its replacement. However, it's good to see reviews as I would imagine I'll be on the look out for a new air pad very soon. Thanks.
Sooooo many people having that same issue still. They apparently fixed it but no, still ongoing. Its fine them sending replacements out and good after sales service but no good when you're out camping and have an awful and cold night on the floor. I'm out now and used the unigear mat again, it's so comfy. Love it 👍
I previously had a self inflating Vango mattress when I last backpacked but sadly that eventually started to leak. It wa good in its day, but I see now that infatable mats are the 'in thing'
I was all set to buy the yellow mat from Decathlon, as there is a shop nearby and their warranty is good too, but the Unigear looks a great optkion as well. I'll never be wild camping in the winter, so a R rated mat isn't really essential (I don't think) .. If YOU were buying one new mat now .. would it be the Decathlon or the Unigear one ?
Regards from Whitley Bay
Mmmmh 🤔 they're both good mats and similar price. Decathlon a little lighter but it tapers. For comfort, I'd say the unigear. My pillow straps to it better as irs squared not tapered and that also gives more room for my feet. For piece of mind and weight saving then the decathlon. Tough one really.
@@NoviceWildCamper Thanks for the detailed reply
I like the width of this one and not too pricey. Worth a shot.
Yeah I have the xl version and it's great plus the sides are slightly higher keeping you on the mat 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper is the xl version the stats in the video, if so then the weight isnt too bad for that size.
Yes I didn't realise till after the standard size is quite a bit lighter.
@@NoviceWildCamper definately worth a shot and i as you do have allways used a foil backed ethafoam pad underneath, they weigh nothing and cost nothing.
Xtherm is the way forward. You get what you pay for ohh yeahhhhh!
Fine for you millionaire hilleberg snobs 😂🤣👍
And if you like sleeping on a crisp packet 🤣
@@NoviceWildCamper I used it last winter in snow. It was like sleeping on a radiator. And cause I have the large size, it is mega comfortable. definitely worth every penny. Lucky I didn't pay for mine 😂😂
Did you nick it?
Thanks. Beautiful video.
Thanks Andrey. Sorry didn't see your comment, seemed to be hidden in the background. Thanks for watching 👍
I'm quickly getting turned off air beds. I've had three fail on me in the last year alone. My Decathlon Forclaz XL went on me this weekend and it's only 6 months old. Sick of air beds... that being said I kind of want to get this one now. Dam you Mike for being such a good salesman! haha
🤣 this one is really thick material so should be good. What the hell are you doing to them? Erections whilst on your front is not good for mats 😂
@@NoviceWildCamper I cant help it Mike l, I'm only human 😂😂😂
It'd because you weren't alone wasnt it? 😉🤣
It's your fault I've spent another "£20 on eBay" :D Mat on order. My UL80 has been fine for my 1st 2 camps - really comfortable, but have been looking for a budget insulated mat. This sounds just right so will give this a go, as I am a side sleeper. Cheers Mate
😂 sorry. Although I wouldn't rely on the UL80 long term anyway. So many reports of them letting people down and deflating. Thus mat is really comfy and wider than the UL80 (or at least my large is) I found I felt "perched" on the UL80 and wasn't wide enough to get comfy. 👍
Not sure what your last comment was but it's not there anymore 😂🤷🏼♂️
Another great review, thanks 👍
Cheers Duncan, only an initial one. Update to come after winter 👍
Enjoyed the video, nice review.
Cheers buddy 👍
Have just ordered one it gets here Saturday it’s to replace my UL80 as am fed up with with it going down
You'll love it. Great pad. 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper yep it has arrived can not wait to try it out
Cool.
Great video! Thanks. -Randy
Cheers randy 👍
This does look good. As a possible alternative, I got a Thermarest Prolite Plus for £65 (it was the last one, in a funny colour), which weighs 650g and has a R rating of 3.2. Not everyone loves 'self inflating' mats but I find it very comfy and it does have the advantage of not being completely useless should you get a puncture.
That's light for a self inflating one. Is it bulky?
@@NoviceWildCamper Yeah, fairly bulky compared to an inflatable - 28cm x 12cm allegedly.
Although - actually, that's smaller than the stated packed size of the Unigear one...
Yeah that's definitely wrong though. Mine is 28cm x 12cm. I saw their measurement and thought it didn't look right
Hi, thanks for the recommendation, this may sounds perfect. I want the regular but can’t find it for sale in the uk. I might order one, did you get it from unigear directly? Apparently the shipping is free but I was worried about surprise customs charges. Did you have any problems?
Hi. There's no charges for an item of this value so you should be fine 👍if you use the link on my vid it should take you direct and you get a discount with my code. Its showing regular and large in stock. 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper thanks for your help 👍
No problem. Its still one of my favourite pads. I only use my thermarest because I've just got it for winter but I've used this one throughout the year with a foam pad under for extra warmth down to -6 👍
Dibs on first comment ! Woohoo ! Thanks for the review.
😂 Well done. Cheers Mark.
Looks decent for the price. I have the ul50 and 80 but haven't tested them in the cold yet.
The UL80 is supposed to be 1.6 or 2 r value but its not ASTM tests so doesn't mean anything. Loads of Chinese mats have r value with no verification (I know trekology is USA design but Chinese made) so you never know what you're getting really. Nice to find a cheap one that's legit 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper just wear the old thermals and a pair of socks. That'll do me. As soon as it gets to 0 degrees that's the end of camping season for me
Fair enough. I sue thermals in the winter along with my down boots as I do suffer cold feet 👍
Omg I'm so upset, they don't seem to do it anymore? Your link doesn't pull it up and the other mats don't look the same
Just checked and it works. It will take you to tha mainstream then search under camping and you'll see the P3 mat there blue or green.
You will never ever get it back in the stuff sack, unless you have a vacume pump. The stuff sack is basically a joke as a pump. I got a USB inflator pump and then you have to be creative to make it work.
I agree that the pump sack is not good. Its way too small however I have used it for a year solid camping almost weekly and never had an issue getting it back in the stuff sack. 🤷🏼♂️ unless they've changed it but I'm not aware however as you see in the video I had it in back in the sack at the end if it after using it and even mention that it's a nice oversize bag to get it in and I don't struggle like I did with my decathlon one.
£55 now … prices on gear that gets a good name for itself just seen to fly up!
Yeah everything's going through thr roof.
Have to disagree a bit, the klymit static v insulated is smaller or the same size as that mat but lighter. But to be fair is also more expensive. Looks a great mat for the price.
Thanks Chris. I was looking g a those but looking at the website the equivalent size static v luxe sl is lighter but wider pack and also is only 1.3 R value by ASTM but yes is 300g lighter and a lot more expensive. If you go to the insulated version it's 887g and similar packsize but 6.5 r value however even more expensive. I think for £37 there isn't an R value mat our there that competes really. 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper The change in R Value with Atsm is a strange one. I've used the static v insulated down past minus and found it great. The old value was 4.something the new value is 1.5 I think for the one I have. I'll dig it out tomorrow it has the old and new values on the bag. I forget you're a tall weirdo and need a larger mat 😂🤣 the luxe would be a double bed for me 🤣😁🤔😉 so the one I have might fit your legs.
😂 I know, that's the issues us lanky freaks have 🤣 apparently the old system wasn't regulated and people were making up R values so they made it a level playing field. But like down feathers being regulated as to where they come from. It has to pass a test. Although saying that apparently a lot of safe down is still got from live birds without the larger companies knowing 🤦♂️🤷🏼♂️
@@NoviceWildCamper gotta love the minefield of wild camping 🏕️😂 I've just invested in an exped downmat HL. I'm a very cold sleeper and getting no younger ❄️😭❄️🤣 plus I'm all about comfort these days. It's a luxury item and to be honest bloody expensive but only 496g. Bought if for walking Hadrians Wall in November. You would probably use it as a sit mat 😂🤣😁
I like the look of those. Out of my price range though 🙄🤣
I reckon that might serve me well. How was it on the hips and shoulders when laying on your side?
Absolutely fine. Nice and thick and comfy. 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper Ansum! At that price I’ll add it to my far too extensive (and expensive) shopping list!
😂👍
Nice review Michael, looks a comfy matt, I got a thermarest and it's nowhere near comfy as my decathlon one, is this matt more comfier than the decathlon?
Reckon it's on par at least. I stay on this better than my decathlon as its raised slightly round the sides like the trekology but without the punctures 😂
@@NoviceWildCamper I'm going to test that decathlon in the winter see how I get on with it and it fits lovely in my tent also so see how it holds up when it gets colder
Have you got anything to go under it?
@@NoviceWildCamper ye foil mat I always take
@@nicholasromans5816 I find putting a reflective mat (the highlander thing every youtuber and his dog has, as well as me) on top of my sleeping pad warmer than using it as the bottom layer.
Tbh, find it better regarding slippage as well, I found adjusting the pad back on top of the reflective mat a pain, whereas moving my fat bod back on top much in a sleeping bag is much easier.
Would this mat fit in a dutch hooped bivi ?
I'm not sure what the measurements are of the bivvie. You can compare on their websites though. 👍
The decathlon matt is 1.5 rated R value
Originally it had a zero rating. It has now been tested with a 1.5r value.
Ok 🙂 it is a really nice summer matt. Now they have one that is similar structure but insulated and rated at 3.3 R value
Yeah they've been bringing out a lot of new gear recently. Although I don't use it much now its a really comfy mat.
It looks like a nice budget air mattress. Nice review. ~RVA~
