  • Delver 2e, by rpgnatalie, is a surrealist game of dungeon crawling and meaning-making, set in a world that starts to forget itself, and all its memories are pooled into the dungeon. All manners of strange things have trickled in, as well as people seeking to recover them, whether for power, truth, redemption, or just to survive, will you do more than that?

Strange is basically the easiest way to explain surrealism.

This immediately brought to mind a little game called Songbirds. Its also a surrealist adventure that labels itself as 'eldritch fantasy', with some of the most beautiful prose Ive ever read in an RPG module. It also has a d100 list of mutations, of which you can find such things as 'Rorschach's Eyes', 'Kafka's Metamorphosis', and 'Muppet'.
Also, as far as surrealism goes, its mostly about the vibe. Sure there's symbolism thrown in sometimes but most of the time the artists are just trying to get some kind of feeling or emotion across. 'Dreamcore' could be considered a modern take on surrealism.

Dreamcore sounds like a very good way to describe surrealism.
Subconscious-core is probably more accurate but also way too long.

I clicked on this video with some particular goal in mind, but now, at the end of it, i can't really remember that goal or where exactly i lost that memory. Why are we here? Just to dungeoncrawl?

this seems pretty directly influenced by the work (and title) by Dali called "The Persistence of Memory." you know, the melting clocks. he stated (to paraphrase) that he was trying to illustrate the essence and dialogue of accessing memory of a time, and place. sometimes the impressions are vivid, sharp, and precise. sometimes the memory (and time within it) is warped by accessing it.
surrealists looked to different methods to access the buried information that existed below the surface of their consciousness, but many adopted automatism, a means of making art that embraced chance and attempted to remove consciousness. by splattering paint, allowing materials to fall and be placed according to chance, and doodling around the resulting shapes and composition, the artist essentially removed their agency as much as possible from the creative process. here, the record keeper seems to be playing the role of surrealist artist - the players are elements of the composition. but the players also seem to be delving for their own buried content - the characters, scene, and game system could all be viewed as a form of automatism. the idea seems to be that by accessing the unconscious mind the composers and composition can enter a pure form of narrative that has not been sterilized by social mores or insecurities. can you tell i'm charmed by this? this is awesome.

The cover art reminds me of Land of the lustrious- that manga about gem people fighting moon creatures (there's more and it goes existential, but no spoilers)
Quite possibly due to proportions of the character
And the game, just like surrealism, is very interpretative- that's why it's kinda hard to understand.
It's vague on purpose, just giving a few more defined lines for the person looking at it to hold on to.

Seems fun! Some of the aspects of this remind me of Bibliocalypse

I had a brief fling with Surrealism back in college. I still couldn't really explain it, even accounting for ten years distance. "Weird for the sake of symbolism" is a pretty good descriptor. (As opposed to Dada, the art movement Surrealism sprung from, which is "Weird for the sake of antagonism towards the very _concepts_ of beauty and meaning, because we just got out of WWI and are disillusioned with the world").

The DM in this game is just the AI in Left 4 Dead or WH40K Darktide

@@11dragonkid11 it did in my head. i think they call the AI The Director os smth, he spawns and sends waves of enemies your way whenever he thinks appropriate. At times, half of a DMs job is to describe stuff but in this game that role is very distributed and that narrative side… well it’s a dungeon crawler so may have a very simple narrative, or probably something similar to Heart. What this means is the role of the DM is to just put obstacles in your way.

_it made sense in my head_
