- Sir Frederick Ashton and Moira Shearer - The Tango from 'Facade'
There is a photo of the pair in the ballet which has the caption:
"Friends of Covent Garden, Christmas evening rehearsal, Royal Opera House, London, Sunday 17th December 1967. Ballerina, Moira Shearer, comes out of retirement to dance at a special single performance at the Friends of Covent Garden Christmas evening, she danced the tango from Facade with Sir Frederick Ashton, her first stage appearance for 15 years, she wore her original costume in the dance".
Thank you so much.
pleasure Emma
I love this music by Walton, and the story behind it. This was a wonderful snippet but, oh so brief! Thanks for finding this and sharing.
I am very fond of the music too

What a wonderful snippet of this ballet ❤
Indeed - Moira Shearer, came out of retirement to dance this at a special single performance at the Friends of Covent Garden Christmas evening
¡ Muy divertido! Gracias por mostrar estás piezas tan simpáticas y alegres,!
mi placer :)
I was reading "Quicksilver", the autobiography of Rambert and all of a sudden realized that Ashton's detailed choreography, which often does not travel much and has intricate steps and relies on gestures and facial expressions a lot, was created for very small stages. His style was probably highly influenced by the limitations of the size of the theatres, such as the Mercury, where the audience sat close to the performers and you almost had to dance in one spot.
i agree - his chore would have been influenced by those very small stages. a little relatedly the company found it a challenge moving the big stage at CG after the war
@@JohnRaymondHall indeed. And perhaps we can still see traces of it in the RAD ballet style. It is a little more "contained" (like Bournonville) than for example the Vaganova style.
@@hannekekoolen8243 i agree!
so fun to see!
isn't it!
Merci beaucoup! Je n’ai pas connu cette ballerine. Quelle grâce et quelle beauté!
elle a acquis une renommée internationale en tant que star du film 'The Red Shoes' qui mettait en vedette Léonide Massine
Seeing this, it occurs to me how rarely one sees dancers move backwards!
yes, not often - Markova does in film of 'Rouge et Noir'
