- Two powerful Queens battle for one throne in the riveting and extraordinary drama based on a true story, Mary Queen of Scots. A chronicle of two strong woman pitted against each other in an age of male dominance, the 16th century tale showcases “bold performances” (Lindsey Bahr, Associated Press) from Academy Award® nominees Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) and Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) in their roles as Mary I of Scotland and Elizabeth I of England. Filled with manipulation, betrayal and deceit from start to finish, Mary Queen of Scots also features an outstanding supporting cast including Guy Pearce (The King’s Speech), Jack Lowden (Dunkirk), Joe Alwyn (Boy Erased) and David Tennant (“Doctor Who”).
Mary Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Ronan). Queen of France at 16, widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry and instead returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. By birth, she also has a rival claim to the throne of Elizabeth I (Robbie), who rules as the Queen of England. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Rivals in power and love, the two Queens make very difficult choices about marriage and children. Betrayal, rebellion and conspiracies within each court imperil both Queens-driving them apart, as each women experiences the bitter cost of power.
Hailed by critics as “cleverly entertaining” (Stephanie Zacharek, Time), Mary Queen of Scots on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital comes packed with captivating bonus features including a fascinating and compelling commentary by actors and filmmakers as well as exclusive featurettes that will take viewers on a beautiful behind-the-scenes journey into the making of this remarkable film.

I bet you guys did not know that both Queens are buried next to each other at Westminster Abby in London. Its crazy because the cousins never met each other.
Hi, actually Queen Elizabeth was buried beside Queen Mary I, her half-sister and not beside Mary, Queen of Scots :))
Mary was not originally buried at Westminster - after her execution she was buried at Peterborough Abbey, when Katheryne of Aragon is buried. When her son became James I of England, he had her remains moved to London. She is not next to Elizabeth but across the aisle. Close enough. 😀
Chris Flowers different Mary
The Mary who buried next to Elizabeth I is Mary I or Bloody Mary (Elizabeth’s half sister daughter of Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII)
@@babuybabuyan Mary Stuart Mary I and bloody are the same person .
HalloIchBinDieGabi no they aren’t. Mary Stewart was the daughter of king James V of Scotland and his second wife, Marie de Guise. Mary I of England was Henry VIII’s daughter by Katheryne of Aragon. She ruled England with her husband Philip of Spain, after her brother Edward VI died. When she died, because she had no children, Philip returned to Spain and Elizabeth became queen. When Elizabeth died, Mary Stewart’s son James VI of Scotland became king of England. Mary Stewart’s father James V was the son of James IV and Margaret Tudor (Henry VIII elder sister).
Mary didn’t have a Scottish accent.... she had a French accent because she lived in France since she was a baby. She acted and spoke as a French woman.
you know that is an excellent point and does take away credibility, i didnt consider this. first thing off the boat and shes got the strong draw, no it doesn't happen like that. but Saoirse Ronan could be speaking a 12th century Swaheli dialect and id still be in love.
Presumably, she even thought in French.
@@mortalclown3812
Another thing movies about Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots do repeatedly is contain a scene where the Queens meet. The two never met…but I guess the drama factor is just too good for the writers to pass up.
I am pretty sure she was about 6 years old when she moved to France. Which means that french would not have been her native tongue.
@Suzi
True…it’s just a film, but IMO, it could have been just as interesting and entertaining (perhaps even more so) had this facet of history been portrayed accurately. It would have highlighted why the Scottish barons were so adverse to her. I’m not a fan of revising history….and especially doing so for such a petty reason.
A very good film. Both leading actors were compelling. Was it historically accurate? Well, no (as far as the historical record shows), but it isn't a history lesson. As Shakespeare says in so many different ways in the prologue to his plays, "O, pardon! And let us, On your imaginary forces work. Piece out our imperfections with your thoughts. For 'tis your thoughts that now must deck our kings. Gently to hear, kindly to judge, our play".
The opening scene on the beach reminded me so much of The Piano. Don't know if it was a homage or blrh directors really like ocean shots, but it was ever so lovely to see~ 🤗
Why do they continue to portray Mary as young and beautiful at the time of her execution? When she went to the chop, she was neither. In fact, when they raised her severed head, the red wig came off, and her chubby faced head with its short, balding gray hair was revealed. It would be refreshing to see a truly historically accurate version be filmed.
Nathan Fugate that would've been an awesome ending tbh
The truth of matter is Americans don't want to go to the theaters see old ugly fat women. Everybody wants to see young sexy actresses. Such is Hollywood.
Nathan Fugate
Because it’s kind of weird when Mary is in her twenties for the whole movie to have her played by someone else in the last five minutes.
Because I think in this one she is the heroine and victim of the cruel Queen Elisabeth who Mary attempted to murder but who cares about accuracy when there is enough drama and a black man in the inner circle of the queen (facepalm).

I hate how weak and insecure they made Elizabeth seem
Ramona Oklahoma was she not ? I’m genuinely asking, since she actually had the now extinct smallpox
Elizabeth is interpreted in many different ways depending on history writing. Because of the lack of solid evidence on smaller details of Elizabeth’s life, historians and filmmakers present different views on her persona itself. This film presents a different view than Cate Blanchett’s films did, but we don’t know if either are correct per se
Cate Blanchett's Elizabeth is too feisty for me, and she didn't portray her with smallpox
She became strong, but as every single strong person in the world she was weak in the first place. I actually think they made her more human, more accessible, I found the development of her character very interesting and I was thrilled by the performance of Margot Robbie (I even wanted to see more of her).
When it came to Mary Elizabeth was always insecure jealous just like her other pretty cousins Katherine grey lettece Knowles she imprisoned them at times Katherine was for years

Mary's castle is kinda rustic if compared to Elizabeth's.
Yeah, and the holy statue got drenched in seawater when she got off the boat. What a shame.
@@Acme633 What you mean with that?
I mean everything with Mary's court and attendants seemed so primitive. Like in the scene I mentioned, they did not even protect the holy statue from seawater.
@@Acme633 oh, that's right. I though you were kinda ironic or something like, because I don't dominate english (not yet). But that's right, Elizabeth Palace is modern and more detailed, Mary's castle seems to be very very medieval. And other aspects as well, like the court.
That at least makes some sense. Scotland was a much poorer country than England at the time. When her son, James VI of Scotland, becomes King of England after the death of Elizabeth, he can't believe how he hit the jackpot.
I cant wait any longer to rent this. Thanks for the movie tease!!!
I hate the argument that Hollywood has to take "artistic license" with movies to make them appeal to modern sensibilities and desire for "drama." History is overflowing with amazing things that modern people love to see: sex, betrayal, scandals, violence, wars, intrigue, plot twists, etc. It is only boring history teachers and professors who educate with such mind-numbing effect that history is all about dates. Instead, focus on the people and the events, and all of the intrigues contained therein, and you can turn many from believing that history has to be "dramatized" into being interesting, into KNOWING history, its events and people, are fascinating without any extemperanous Hollywood influence.
Well said!
Charity Sheppard historical accuracy above all
totally agree, Charity. My favorite teacher in college was my history teacher. I was blessed to have him. His class was all essay...He was so into the characters he taught that it was truly interesting and entertaining. This time period is my favorite. Can never get enough of it.
Charity Sheppard Totally agree with you. Or, why not just make a fictional film? Not rewrite our history. It's intellectual pretensions and the Hollywood need to be following whatever ridiculous trends are currently fashionable.
I know it is very sad isn't it. It seemed to have modern standards applied to it. I'm not racist but I cannot believe there were so many dark races in the palaces in those days. I cannot believe Mary would have spoken to homosexuals in the way that she did.
Fun fact: Lucius Malfoy’s ancestor once tried to seduce young Elizabeth to marry him but failed, then he cursed her family. That’s why centuries later her house turned into his descendants’ property: the Malfoy Manor.

Good point but go with it; don't let it spoil your enjoyment. BUt why did both MAry and Elizabeth have perfect teeth? Why were they about 6 inches taller than the real ladies? Why did they use modern horses and not the breeds they had back in 16th Century? Well, you see, because the film is a play and made with actors (people and horses) in the 21st century.
@@jvincent6548 Mary was 5'11" inches tall ... Elizabeth's teeth were black and rotted, Mary was younger than her second cousin Elizabeth.
In the end, Mary had to clean up Henry VIII's dynastic mess. It's ironic how Henry decried his elder sister Margaret's wish for a divorce from her second husband while he himself was creating a huge mess in England just to marry Anne Boleyn. And although Anne won in the end by her daughter Elizabeth becoming the most famous monarch in the history of England, it was Henry VIII's sister Margaret -- whose line he himself crossed out of the English succession -- that had the strongest claim after numerous replacements before and after Elizabeth I's reign were considered or actually placed on the throne (Lady Jane Grey). His sister Mary (Queen of France, Duchess of Suffolk) also had a line that was put above Margaret's claim because he didn't want the Stewarts of Scotland to have a claim to the throne of England as well as actually succeed to it, but in the end all of the Grey line -- apart from Jane being executed by Mary Tudor (his daughter from his Spanish first wife, Katharine of Aragon) -- was deemed unworthy to rule or were close surveillance.
The able claimant from the Grey line was Katherine Grey, Lady Jane Grey's sister. After that there was only one possible claimant left in England... Arabella Stuart, who was the daughter of Lord Darnley's -- who was Mary, Queen of Scots' English second husband -- younger brother, Charles Stuart. And Elizabeth imprisoned Arabella the way she had Katherine Grey, out of spite for both of them marrying without her consent since Elizabeth herself was choosing to stay unmarried. She was very jealous of women who had found love and were married because she was unable to marry her personal love interest, Robert Dudley. In the end, it was Margaret Tudor's bloodline that succeeded to the throne because Mary, Queen of Scots is Margaret's granddaughter. Irony at its best other than Anne Boleyn's daughter ruling England effectively and becoming an icon during and after her death, for 45 years. Mary's son succeeded by Mary sacrificing her safety due to not ratifying the Treaty of Edinburgh. Because of this, she was looked upon with disfavor by England; the specific terms for Mary was that she couldn't use the English heraldry/coat of arms on her own coat of arms because England already had a queen (Elizabeth).
Even if there was extreme pressure on all sides for Mary to ratify the treaty, she chose not to and maintained her place in the succession even if Elizabeth never officially named her. Elizabeth didn't because Mary's claim was absolutely 100% undeniable due to being her own aunt's granddaughter, and Mary being Elizabeth's first cousin once removed. Weathering the loss of her throne, dignity, and imprisonment for 19 years, Mary was victorious in the end because she gave England the heir that Elizabeth did not, and that is how in the end Mary is still victorious over Elizabeth. She did her dynastic duty. All descendants of the current royal family trace themselves back to Mary, Queen of Scots and her granddaughter Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia -- sometimes called the Winter Queen.
and in the end we all die, we're all flesh and bones. I'm sure lizzie was burdened by the death of a cousin and fellow monarch all her life and im 100% sure she regreted it till she died.

@toby rose how did you know? Are you in their times?
@@jfo8998 It would have been documented ... well documented. When Henry VIII met with the King of France paintings and documentation showed that.
It's weird that Mary was portrayed as youthful and vibrant compared to the old, wig wearing white faced Elizabeth. While Mary also wore wigs (her wig fell off after her execution) and also appeared quite aged by the time of her death.. And she did not wear a red under dress at her execution it was (I believe) burgundy and brown or vice versa.. Idk, there is something off about the way her appearance is presented imo.
Yeah they made her into an old hag with a wig who had sex with one of her nobles on the side. Mary was the virgin queen who inspired resistance against the Catholic Spanish invasion. Mary queen of scots and Elizabeth 1 where to Great Queens ahead of there time!
Hani Elizabeth was, Mary... was not
Elizabeth was a great Queen, Mary was an idiot who gives Queens a bad name.
@Dana Davison Mary wasn't weak. Mary existed in a time where sovereign queens weren't common place. Scotland was tired of monarchs and even more tired of being a political football for France and England. Mary wasn't raised in Scotland, so she had a difficult time assimilating back into Scottish culture/politics when she did return. During her time as Queen Consort of France, it was Catherine and Mary's Guise uncles who ruled France in hers and Francis' name so she didn't have much experience with ruling alone. She believed in religious tolerance which was intelligent and highly progressive and unheard of in 16th century Europe. She dealt with depression, miscarriage, and even possible rape and was surrounded by scheming lords that wanted her gone the moment she returned to Scotland to rule. Imagine having to deal with that and not have a single person that you can trust on your side. That's not a weak person. Mary didn't always make the best decisions but to say that she was weak is absurd.
@@lovingjohn sounds great, unfortunately nothing of this is represented in the movie
It's Elizabeth I (never use Arabic numerals, only Roman).
I'd advise capital letters for 'Queen' and 'Scots' (one is a title and the other a name of a 'people').

Despite the historical inaccuracies, the film is good. The actors portrayed the roles very well and the costumes, make up, hair are accurate. Again, a movie is set to entertain and educate but this somewhat compromised the accuracy for entertainment but talking about entertainment, this is great. In fact, this is the only film that portrayed Queen Elizabeth's face after having a smallpox, there are no movies or shows out there that did that. But the "forced diversity" in this film makes it horrible. David Rizzio and Lord Darnley aren't gay, Bess is not Asian and there are no Black Lords at the 16th century, but then again, if you want historical accuracy, read books and watch documentaries not movies and TV series. Look at the series "The Tudors" ahh, it was way horrible than this, the actors are a complete miscast. "Reign" so much historical inaccuracy. "Elizabeth" and "Elizabeth: the Golden Age" just right but bias at times. Look, the point is, even if there are some historical inaccuracies, the series and movies still worth a watch because it is not generally inaccurate and also entertaining and at least would give you an overview in history but make sure not to rely on these. Did you know that this movie was already proposed a decade ago, Scarlett Johannson was set to play the title role in 2007 and it is set to be seen in cinemas in 2008. Remember "The Other Boleyn Girl"? It has Natalie Portman and ScarJo but also at that same year, Mary, Queen of Scots is set to be shown but unfortunately, there are some minor problems and was delayed and delayed until they cast Saoirse to play the title role and later cast Margot in 2017 to play Queen Elizabeth.

Wow this is who Reign was about...
They never met in life.
mypantsabsorbsoap Why should film makers bother with historical accuracy. Most people who see the film won't know the difference between Mary Stuart and Mary Poppins.
GUYS! Mary I Bloody Mary was the Daughter of Catherine of Aragon, she married Philip Charles V's son, but Mary Stuart married Francis of France first after his death she went to Scotland and met Lord Darnley married had a son, but Elizabeth had no direct heir to throne because she was the virgin queen, so she took her son James as heir, after Elizabeth's death age of House Stuart started thats all ı am studying this ı know
Henry actually left Queen Jane his heir after his children and Edward named Jane his direct heir as well as her "heirs male". Mary and her son were not in line for the throne.
GREAT FILM CAST and DIRECTORS
I'm reading the book that this is based on. Haven't seen the film yet, but heard and have already seen from some clips inaccuracies even from this new biography of Mary. Not sure she would have had a Scotch accent, having been much more fluent in French. And it doesn't seem like they really aged her for her beheading (including a wig to cover her shot gray hair) while aging Elizabeth.
Plus the forced diversity for the sake of diversity. Hey, we need some black characters. Let's make some of these real white people black. Diversity is cool and all when it fits. Gonna make a historical drama? You can't jam all your liberal ideology into it.
There is a lot more that is far from the truth in the film. If you value true history don't watch it. If you want entertainment that might be different.
Mary was brought up in France & would of spoken with a French accent , Elizabeth & mary never met face to face , mary’s son became the next king even though he betrayed his own mother
Not historically accurate in any sense of the word...pulled this out of thin air
Why do people like you feel the need to say this about every single historical drama? The cast and crew of this film have already said tons of times that they took a bunch of artistic liberty in the writing of the movie. I mean there's a goddamn scene where Elizabeth and Mary meet in spite of proof that it never happened. Just enjoy the film for what it is instead of going around pointing fingers about "historical accuracy." No one fucking cares.
TJ Clearly people do care because its been widely criticized and people like you care enough to comment (: Facts over feelings!
Starting with black people potrayed at movie?! Wtf
@@runaway817 Every film or doc of Mary seems to put in a scene of her meeting Elizabeth, except Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson. I think the temptation of having them meet is just too strong for writers/directors, because it makes for good drama. Never having them meet, even if that's the truth as far as we know from historical records, would probably be too disappointing to most viewers to those who know little to nothing about their lives.
Its not a documentary.....
This movie was so sad, if only the Queens banded together
1:27 I want a dress that does that
What’s with the 4 earnings? I definitely don’t think they had that back then? Maybe I’m wrong. And that hair I’ve never seen that!
Gemma 😍
After 6 minutes of preview, I will not be renting, buying or watching.
Hanna should fend for herself as a queen, yet she had a good surviving skills delivered by Erik
Well apparently the English court was at hogwarts hahhaha why do they choose such an iconic Harry Potter set for the corridors of the court?!
Phoebe El that’s how the courts looked
J R what does the black people in the film have to do with this comment? We know it’s inaccurate
I love the actress playing Bess so much but she was a red head! And looked alot like Elizabeth, but here they have nothing in common, it's so dissapointing
I have just watched. Very disapointing indeed and totally inaccurate.
When sacred heart of truthful earth has been ransacked through the hatred scorr
They replaced the power of sacred with hatred scorn where their babies born lives be torn
Hi team Uk Release Plz>??? messaging march 2019 ?? any idea ?? cheers
Why are POC in this film? This is scotland and england in the 16th century especially the nobility
that castle corridor looks like hogwart's castle corridor
Now we need to make history politically correct now.. Smh.
Andrew Walton It amuses me how so called liberals are the least tolerant.
It is sad isn't it. The truth is always more interesting than political correctness. We can learn from the good and the evil. This had the stamp of political correctness all over it. I really regret buying it and feel I have been hoodwinked. The beautiful red hair on the cover hoodwinked me for a lot of rubbish.
@Andrew Walton Don't give them any ideas
No, they're just actors. They're acting parts. It's what actors do.
reign
There was black people in a 16th century English court???
There may of been a few but they would of been slaves and you would only see them as being servants
Please refer to my comment above where I debunk the one book in the history of all literature that states that claims blacks where in English court.
Of course not. Of course not. It's a law now that in all historical movies about Europeans, blacks have to be casted in the name of diversity and color blind casting. Falsifying and blackwashing European history on the behalf of the diversity agenda. Therefore you see in all recent produced historical movies blacks playing all kind of European people to propagate the lie that Europe was always multiracial, inclusive and diverse, etc. This movie should be all white but it doesn't fit the liberal leftists narrative and their multiculturalism, diversity propaganda. Only all black movies are allowed and celebrated.
Wise Dragon same with many of these historical whitewashed movies that take place in the Middle East. No difference at all.
@@shellbythesea12 yep and even as servant blacks were very very rare, a needle in a haystack that were virtually non-existing in Tudor England.
Excuse me where is the other 12 seconds I was promised
It’s ‘The Palace of Holyrood House’ NOT ‘Holyrood Palace’.
Is that the girl from the movie Hanna?
correct
it’s alisha Yeah and Lady Bird
Only the accent was wrong other than that this film is more accurate than the OTHERS
Praying
Obviously working.
Her son ends up becoming King of England anyway?!? Why bother executing her, why didn’t they just agree that Liz rules England and Mary rules Scotland?
Because for the Catholic population of England, Elizabeth was illegitimate because of her mother and should never have been Queen. Mary was actively plotting with Catholic rebels to murder Elizabeth
As far as I understand about their relationship, it is not proper for Mary, Queen of Scots to have referred to Elizabeth I as her sister. Elizabeth I was Henry VII's granddaughter and Mary his great-granddaughter so Elizabeth was Mary's first cousin once removed. In my culture, that equals a paternal aunt. So why did Mary keep calling Elizabeth her "sister" in this series?
It’s a term of endearment.
And they are "sister"queens.
Sansa, juego de tronos! 👑💎
The queen in the North🙂🙂🙂
I'm not too familiar with the english court at that time. But is the balck guy there historically accurate? Or is he just written in because of modern SJW diversity adgenda?
Cultural marxism
Cheddar man...

There would not have been a black guy in charge of the Lords from Elizabeths court at that time. And certainly not one who could rape one of Mary's maids with impunity. That may be modern life but it was not so then.
I'm descended from a member of the Stuart clan. When I found that out as a girl, I began to learn more about Mary Stuart. That led me to learning about Elizabeth Tudor. The more I studied about both, the more I came to respect and be awed by Elizabeth and the less I liked Mary. I have no sympathy for Mary Stuart. She was rather arrogant to assume she deserved England's throne when she was run out of Scotland for her bad choices and incompetence.
somos nobleza europea e inglesa, salir a cobrar
Is the movie worth watching?
No save your time and money, I wish I had
Any reign Fans here?
Oh God yes!!
THIS film is utter rubbish I much prefer the film Mary Queen of Scots with Vanessa Redgrave as Mary.
That was a good movie, and at least she didnt have a Scottish accent.
You people are ass
Truth is hard to find in movies these days Amarilla. I'll make up for it by getting the film you mention.
That one was rubbish as well.
Entirely your choice if you don't like it.
Can any body please make me understand the relationships between queen of Scots Mary and queen of England Elizabeth. I don't understand a thing. Some say they never met but how its making me crazy someone please help me understand their complicated relationship. Why did Mary died I thought she was younger than Elizabeth?
Sushma Ghising They never met and that is historical fact. Elizabeth did offer a meeting in Nottingham but only as a political gesture, she never intended it to happen. Their relationship was complicated by being cousins, but Mary was deeply involved in plots to have Elizabeth assassinated so that she could take the throne. Mary was a demanding guest, wanting all the trappings of monarchy, silver plates, servants, a chair of state and canopy, which, as she had abdicated, were no longer appropriate. I recently bought a batch of Elizabeth 1's letters from the period, which I plan to use as the basis of an accurate book on the subject, when I have finished writing my current book.
You can track the real history from hiostorical records. The film had many many inaccuracies. Mostly rubbish. It was a terrible film that had good scenes but the history was totally off.
Most of it was caused by the war still raging between the England and the Catholic church
I never understood why they continued to call her a queen even after she abdicated.
wait was that Gemma Chan?!!??
It’s joe alwyn by the way!,
Why did they kill out royal blood line
It is sad, that they could not, due to the times they lived in and the politics and the thoughts of the peoples. And the United Kingdom to be, was not ready to accept both Catholic and Protestant practices.
QUEEN MARY OF SCOTTS, literally died for the peace of our island. Her death allowed, the two countries to be United, after Elizabeth’s death, and James VI of Scotland became James I of England, two crowns
Finally United, under one Crown. These Queens had to sacrifice themselves. For the good of us all, and in the end to which we still today, must be grateful for those sacrifices.
Poor Mary queen of Scot's
