Anyone going to the cinema in 1933 to see this was certainly getting a treat for their money. A stunning and sumptuous depiction of life in Henry Vlll's court and sprinkled with many stars of the time. A superb production with a tour de force performance from Laughton at its heart.

@@glorialange6446 I agree Gloria. I've always loved the history of the Tudors. I think it's because so much happened during the reign of Henry VIII, didn't it? And what happened changed England forever. He broke with Rome and founded the Church of England so he could divorce Katherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. He had Sir Thomas Moore executed because Thomas refused to sign the document saying that Henry VIII was the Head of the Church. And then, after only 3 years of marriage to Anne, he had her beheaded because she didn't give him the son he so desperately wanted. It's ironic that Henry VIII was so determined to have a son considering that his daughter Elizabeth I was such a brilliant Queen, ruthless but still brilliant. It was an amazing period in British history.

Acting was his passion, however his endeavors on screen were a blend of his personal artistry welded a science in study molded thru strict discipline.. He carried it off to a tee actually becoming whom he played... bringing history to life for whatever present day granted such a glorious reunion with the past.

The real story is fascinating. Laughton is the best to portray the King by far. Imagine having to marry a man with a huge ulcerated sore in his leg (early injury- he fell from a Horse). The sore never healed, and the rotted flesh smelled so bad that the Court had to burn spices and use perfume constantly. The Director Korda's brother Vincent did the sets- great stuff! TY.

Actually I believe this is inaccurate. If it was an open wound it would have contracted an infection. I believe it was a cyst. It could be on the knee, calf, inner groin, tail bone.
It is usually a closed looking boil. It fills with duct fluid, blood, puss, and can get a combination of other bodily fluid like sweat…. It smells worse than a dead body. It can be smelt on a person walking around with it… an off odor. periodically it will burst to drain out. The stench is profound and ungodly. The reason for a knock your sock off smell is because the gland was a swelling packet of rotting puss and blood for days, weeks, months and even years!! It’s a match because it’s a gland and zero chances of this stuff making it to the blood stream. You can lance it as much as you want.

Good movie, but like most historical movies, it is not exactly accurate. Queen Katherine of Aragon was King Henry's wife for about 20 years and was not uninteresting. She basically led the action against an invasion while King Henry was away.
Also, first, Jane Seymour died two weeks after giving birth, so she was still alive when Henry first saw his son. And Katherine Howard was a teenager when Henry married her.
But, then, the TV series, The Tudors messed with history, too, and we should know better these days. Aside from The Tudors combining Henry's two sisters, Margaret and Mary into one and having that one marry a man neither married, at least Charles Laughton bears a resemblance to Henry.

His two most important wives were barely mentioned. The film wanted to focus mainly on Anne of Cleves and Kathryn Howard, two of his least important wives. It is what it is.

I do love Elsa as Anne of Cleves! So great to her when she was young, and purposely acting out so Henry wouldn't want her. She was such a good commedian, but I remember her mostly from the 1950s movies (and, of course, from The Bride of Frankenstein, when she was young, but it didn't give her much room to act).
They were hysterically funny together in this movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed this!!! Charles Laughton was an excellent actor… he portrayed King Henry perfectly! His wife played the part great too!
Whenever I see films with Laughton eating it kind of disgusts me now! After hearing of his “sandwich fetish” I can’t get that thought out of my head 🥺

I love it movies like this, back in the 1900's and upwards stopping at around the 1960's making movies like this makes them look so authentic, it's like your seeing the real king Henry and how he had lived and you were there looking at all them living and just doing their daily routine, with me been invisible of course 😆... Also just to say there's a film Called The Black Knight starring Martin Lawrence, if you haven't seen it, without going into to much Detail It's about going back in time, I absolutely loved it so if you decide to give it a watch I hope you all will love it toooooooo... Let me know if you did like it or love it.. I also want to say Thank you to the uploader for putting this up and sharing your joy's in movies with us all 🤗👏💞💐..
