Taylor Swift DID NOT PULL HER ALBUM 1989 OFF OF APPLE MUSIC BECAUSE OF ROYALTY RATES. She did it because Apple Music would not pay anyone, not artist, musicians, producers, sound engineers, etc. for 3 months on any music that was downloaded. Zero is not a rate. Zero is stealing.
Apple coerced each music label to agree to this through the strength of their market share. Each label then coerced each of their artists to agree to so it was all 'legal'. This would have amounted to the largest theft of content in the name of corporate greed in history by a company that had over $200 billion dollars of cash and cash equivalents on its books.
Taylor wrote a letter (very polite and nicely worded and so not the letter I would have written) that shamed Apple into doing the right thing and posted it on her blog. Apple was shamed into paying everyone. She has gotten a load of undeserved crap for this by people who get paid to do their jobs but don't think anyone in music ought to be paid for doing their jobs. How many of these same people would ever work at a company for 3 months before they started getting paid? I'm guessing zero.
She doesn't need the money from the streaming services and can just use them as a discount rack once her albums have sold millions of CDs which is exactly what happened with 1989. She stood up for the value of music and seems to get characterized as greedy for doing it.
Taylor didn't go to college and yet she corrected Apple's thieving pricing policy despite all the marketing and business Ph.D.'s they have on their payroll. She got an entire industry paid for a quarter of a year! When you consider the history of labor relations and all the strikes and riots that have occurred, this is an outstanding unprecedented accomplishment and I'm tired of it being portrayed as it is only self-serving on Taylor's part.
For this reason alone, she should be supported even if you don't like her music. Without her, you might not have the music you like.

This is why I always get mad at people trying to put her down calling her "talentless" and "not a real singer". Yeah maybe her strenghts aren't her vocals, she's not a Gaga or a Whitney Houston, but her songs are still undeniably well written and produced (and she writes/produces most of her material HERSELF, some artists' songs have more writers and producers than lyrics), she works her ass off on tours and performances and the girl is S M A R T.

If you think about it, it's hard NOT for her to be successful, just look at every single aspect of her music and image. Here are some more reasons why she makes the big bucks:
1. On top of creating pop music that is catchy, understandable and therefore wide-reaching, her music is personal, non-explicit and not sexual. Her music being PG-13 has a lot to do with her popularity. 7 year olds can sing her songs without it being weird.
2. She's not active on the internet, exactly why whenever she erases all of her instagram, we're all like "omg is there new music...what is it going to be like...what's the theme....how is she going to surprise us this time." It's not about giving away the cool stuff all at once, it's about pre-viewing, pre-releasing them, giving sneak peeks, and building up to the final release of the album. All the mystery and theories makes her every album the more exclusive and exciting.
3. Like this video explained, the girl understands how to market herself. She understands money and the music industry, and she's willing to either go against it or play its game, whichever benefits her the most. That's what makes me respect her so much is that she not only got a musical brain, she got a business one too.
4. Scandals inevitably contributes to her fame. All the private conversations behind these scandals are unknown to us. The scandals might not be as severe as the media puts it, but scandals do boost publicity, whether if it's good or bad.
5. Authenticity. Personal. If you've ever been to one of her concerts, you'd know that every single one of her show is a distinct and unique experience that only the people who went can experience. All of her fears, hopes, and dreams are revealed in her songs. When she talks to the audience in her concerts, her words are spoken with love and vulnerability. She is not only mature as a musician and as a businesswoman, she is a mature and loving human being who embraces her flaws and wants all of us to do so as well.
5. Not everyone likes her or her music. In fact, the hate and criticism are overwhelming. So she responds, with absolute grace. She writes them into her songs. She keeps minding her own business. She is unapologetic and has conviction in her voice and in her music. She fights on and is consistent with writing music.
6. The more I write the more I realize that this list can get quite long. Her political standings, her cats, etc. etc. are all factors to her image. So in conclusion, here's something Taylor wrote herself (this was in the Reputation Target limited edition magazine), and I think it sums up her message to us pretty nicely:
"The point being, despite our need to simplify and generalize absolutely everyone and everything in this life, humans are intrinsically impossible to simplify. We are never just good or just bad. We are mosaics of our worst selves and our best selves, our deepest secrets and our favorite stories to tell at dinner parties, existing between our well-lit profile photo and our drivers license shot. Just don't get all the 'singing experts' on these feeds... if by singing you mean vocal olympics like Ariana and Mariah then you are kinda limiting your version of the term 'singing'. I totally agree with you but Michael Jackson might not have written everything or played everything but have you seen him dance while he sings. That's just as tough as singing while playing guitar. Furthermore, all solo artists have a big entourage, Taylor might have one less guitar player but she is much better than the other shitty artists. Beatles actually had 5 people for a lot of the time and at least 3 of them wrote the songs. They are a unique band in that most of the songs are not collabs by all the members but either individual efforts or a Lennon-Mccartney composition. Undoubtedly a lot of talent, some of the best songwriting skills and just a great band overall. I love classic rock but I also respect good, talented artists like Taylor with passion(very important) but I am sure the Beatles and Michael Jackson were just as popular and have just as much talent at least.

AND our seats for reputation at MSP were spectacular (again $49/seat!!) ...absolutely one of the best concerts ever...
Anyway, what you're saying above is false...it's not cost more to attend Taylor's concerts...at least not in my experiences...
