      periechontology Except for a few good charter schools here and there, public schools in poor neighborhoods really haven't changed all that much from the 60s, 70s and the late 80s when this movie came out 25 years ago. What Clark said was spot on, because back then, America was about 2/3 finished with making the transition from an industrial based economy to an information based economy. During that transition, well over a million jobs were lost, and nothing has replaced them. And keep in mind, this transition has been going on for about 50 years now.
      So between the job losses and barely any real improvements in public education, there is a growing permanent underclass. You may want to check out a book called The End of Work, by Jeremy Rifkin, where in it he talks about this very topic. And one of the chapters deal specifically with a large number of blacks becoming a permament underclass due to the situation that I'd mentioned earlier. That book came out back in 1995.
      As much as I hate to admit it, Rifkin was correct. There are several US cities that have been devastated by those changes. Most of them have significant black populations, and they once had a strong manufacturing economic base. Detroit and Flint Michigan as well as Gary Indiana are examples.

    • @periechontology
      @periechontology Před 10 lety +18

      High school graduation rates for Blacks have increased by 30% just in the last 10 years. Between just 2000 and 2010, there were 48% more Blacks graduated from college with at least a Bachelors degree. It's indisputable that inner city communities themselves are a heck of a lot less violent and have a higher standard of living than they did in the 1980's.
