Hail to the QUEEN. Latifah absolutely dominates the screen in this number--she works every line (and every curve) like an expert. Also, here's a fun fact: the prisoner at the beginning of the scene smoking a cigarette (who tells Roxie to keep Mama happy) is none other than Chita Rivera, who played Velma Kelly in the original Broadway production of "Chicago!" I love when films honor the source material with cameos like that. :D
Hey, I noticed the rolled down stockings
i knew she looked familiar!
lol
Me too!!
I didn't really consider Queen Latifah "hot", but then Chicago made me see her from a different... Perspective. Like damn, that dance.
I had the same thought. She isn't really the type of women I am into, but she sure does know how to present herself, wich makes her very attractive.
You know what they say: It's all about the presentation.
She's the type of women I am into and I know that thanks to Chicago. Holy shit those curves man.
Yep
She's hot as fuck, always has been, y'all can keep the backhanded compliments. Just say she's beautiful and move along...
This movie made every woman hot
Queen Latifah devours this scene from start to finish, while you pay attention to the lyrics you just can’t take your eyes off of her :)
Queen Latifah, Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones were all amazing in this film!
Then add Chita Rivera, Christine Baranski, and Lucy Liu
Wasn"t that Mya in the movie?
@@jessicavictoriacarrillo7254 Wait - Lucy Liu is in this?? Does she sing and dance too? I really gotta see this.
@@dollcefina She appears very briefly, but doesn't get a performance, unfortunately. You'll remember her character, though.
This whole musical has so much charm for some reason. Love the aesthetic
It was brilliantly directed and written. Bill Condon did such a great job with this script and then directed Dreamgirls
The secrete ingredient is murder!
What I like to say about this movie is that everyone is almost unbeatable, but there is one person that nobody can top- Queen Latifah as Mama. We bow down to the queen of Chicago.
how dare you leave out Queen Latifah's name in the title... love this part
Misogynoir is nothing new
Queen Latifah at her very best!!!! She Nailed this song!!! What a performance!!! Nobody else could have pulled this off like she did!! Bravo!!
Small part, but well done.
Everything about this film is just too notch! The cast, the acting, the camera work, the music - this film deserved it's Oscar, haters can go on whining😅
i don't know if i should be seduced or scared.
Both
Yes
A little from column "A", a little from column "B"
In the immortal words of Philip J Fry: 'I'm scare-roused!'
Thats a whole lotta women! Gimme gimme
U really gonna post this and not even have the full song? This world is full of savages
Ikr I was like excuse me video you can't stop there
Thanks for the warning ✌🏽
Somewhere on YT, Florence Henderson performs a version of this, and I’ll never recover.
The full Mama song is here (although it cuts out the beginning bit where Roxie is settling into jail):

Lol!
No one else could have done this performance any more justice
This was my audition song during my community theater years. Worked almost every time,
Mine was "Nothing", from A Chorus Line.
@@morganchambellan2017 That's a great choice.
As an alto, this was the song I always used for auditions!
I bet that worked fine!
Celebrity (God knows) doesn't always equal either brains or talent; but Queen Latifah has far more than her fair share of both. Always a delight to look at or listen to.
Chita Rivera in the opening sequence... SHE IS thee OG. SHE WAS Velma Kelly on Broadway & Anita in West Side Story.
Don't mess around lovin all these Hollywoodfolks til ya give Chita abit of old school respect. Sis-Chita slays all day.
Okay but her voice and this dress on her is doing things to me. Really really good things 🥰😂
Chloe Mackay . Yuck! If you're bi, gay whatever, keep it to yourself!
This whole movie made my young high school in denial heart go wild 😂😂😂 Women are great
That Queen Latifa is one classy and talented lady, gotta love her.
The first time I watched this movie I thought that she wanted... a different kind of favor.
I mean, yeah, there's that too ;)))
she's called queen for a reason
Jinx will be mama and I can't wait!!!
aww girl you beat me to it! I am over the moon for Jinkx 😻🙌😻🙌😻🙌
Wait, you mean Jinkx Monsoon?
@@TheTrickstersWife Yes! he meant Miss Monsoon Season Jinkx! She was just chosen to play the role on Broadway!!!
Saw her on Feb 4th. AMAZING, flawless, & still beaming with pride! Jinkx was born to do this!
its women like her that make me glad I'm bi. she's got the best curves.
maudina palmer bitch same
Right! Omg
SAME
I'm pansexual
Those arent curves !!!
Those are a damn gift.!!!
"rec-i-proccc-iii-teeeeeeeeee" The five-dollar word's incongruity is just hilarious for some reason
Don't underestimate poor-er Black folks. Sometimes those were the ones with missionary or Catholic educations. I'm one. Now we weren't poor but we were from the hoods of Chicago. But via the Catholic school system we were being taught by nuns with Master's degrees and the occasional Phd. While a great many kids even in rich towns were being taught by people with an Associate's or Bachelor's. And the Archdiocese's curriculum tended to be rich in latin and greek. The funny thing is I hear a lot about code switching and yes, it is a thing. But, I consider my 'reciprocity' side to be the authentic vocabulary, tone, and cadence.
*I first learned the word reciprocate from a Sheila Bosworth novel when I was 11.
@@SanFranDentist94301 It's unfortunate that you immediately assumed this was about race and income. I was talking about the fact that this environment is the 1930s (1920s?) version of a strip club. Not that I'm a strip club connoisseur, but I'd wager some money on the proposition that you don't often hear that word inside modern day strip clubs, or their music. (As further evidence, no one laughed at Mama in the actual jail environment when she used "bigger" words) I contend that this was meant to be a joke, and it was funny. And may I remind you, just by the way, you know nothing of my race (or income, or background, for that matter), so I think it might be you who is doing some "underestimating." Please check yourself before you assume bigotry in another (to paraphrase Matthew 7:3, if you read the Bible). All right?
@@anyviolet Bible verses? No thanks.
@@anyviolet Next, where did I call you a bigot/racist or any of that? What I did do was give you a peek into a subset of Black culture-that even if you ARE Black you might have been ignorant of. But, alas you took it as a veiled implication that you were a bigot. Yet, trust me if I wanted to call you a bigot, I would have called you a bigot.
@@SanFranDentist94301 Here's a quote from you: "Don't underestimate poor-er Black folks." Oh the assumptions in that short statement...you assumed my race, you assumed my income level and what's worse, you directly assumed I was underestimating poor(er) Black folks' (your words not mine) ability to use "five dollar" words. (And you continue to assume that I NEED a "peek into a subset of Black culture" that you happen to know about. Just WOW.) But back to the main point, which was, underestimating poor(er) Black folks' ability to speak using Latinate, longer words = bigotry. So yes, you accused me of it. (I never said anything about being accused of racism, so don't you dare drag that into it now.) Don't backtrack on your accusation now that you've been called out on it. You directly accused me of bigotry without knowing a THING about me: my race, my income, my background. I don't have to put up with that because I made an innocent comment on a genuinely funny joke in a song in a movie. Nope, you don't get to get away with that. I stand by my statement: check yourself before accusing others of bigotry.
A very kind, friendly, down to earth beautiful soul.
Love her, love this song!
Still rocks today.
We are woefully lacking in decent entertainment anymore but at least we have the memories.
As Queen Latifah walks through the door she becomes an alien from Close Encounters!
Joking aside she, and the rest of the cast, are simply perfect in this film.
I'm trying to decide which is more gorgeous, her, the song or that goddamn dress holy sh-
a amazing cast. Have seen this a thousand times.
Leah Johnson love this movie
So, back when I was in jail for a bit, there was this one guard who was really nice. She was always sneaking us stuff. Like toothbrushes and toothpaste (this was a bad bad jail. I caught MRSA in there. They wouldn't give you soap, toothpaste, brushes, pads fucking nothing. This is basic stuff and not luxuries. You should be given this shit if they insist on keeping you there.). One day she walked by and asked if I wanted anything. Told her a pen and some paper and a good tooth brushing. She comes back with the tooth stuff and apologizes that she couldn't swipe any pens or paper because someone was there. She then told me to make sure I got rid of the toothbrush by sending it down the toilet (very possible. Ever see a jail toilet?).
We called her Morton. XD I have no idea what her real name is.
Maybe it was good you never knew her name, that way you couldn't have accidentally ratted on her.
Queen Latifah's face is so beautiful it looks better without the makeup
Stop this.
@@usagi18 backhanded compliments are so 2000 and lame
@@TCt83067695 What?? Nah, it's only backhanded if they said "Queen Latifah's face is so beautiful when she _wears_ makeup". Saying she looks better without makeup is a straight-up compliment!
@@dollcefina no, that is literally like saying she wears too much makeup and it doesn't look good and that she should do without.
Bottom line, we've evolved past that
@@kaiser_suzi_ lol... no, actually I love the way she does her makeup, eventough she doesn't really need it.
SHE'S A GODDESS
Nobody worked harder in this film than Queen Latifas corsage. Wowzers!
Her bra deserves its own award!!
Yes! She looked stunning!
Queen latifah put out an entire cd of show toonish ballads after this.
The only album i ever brought from her. Simply lovely voice!
She does a nice job with "Poetry Man."
Big, black, and beautiful role: exist
Queen latifa:
It’s free real estate
Do we have an actress that's a modern version of Latifa? I feel like big sexy black women aren't given as much love nowadays...
@@mykaruest2165 if anything black woman are probably given more love then anyone else rn but yea i wish we had more women like queen latifa
@@noakalter3497 I'm talking specifically about *big* black women. The type that Queen Latifa dominated.

Lolly Adefope from Shrill or Wunmi Mosaka (sp?) from Loki.
Plus, Queen Latifa isn't too old to play Mama today!
@@sabrinapudlewski9794 Its just good to bring in good blood (especially for pocs) and Queen Latifa isn't forever.
Hail to the Queen! Latifah played the hell outta that role! 👸🏽🥰💯
I absolutely adore Queen Latifah. One of the best singers ever
Chita Rivera, the original Velma Kelly!! :D
Amber Earls yes !!! She made a cameo
@Leonor Távora The woman who asks Roxie if she's ever had Morton before :)
I just realized how similar this awesome performance is to her awesome Ursula performance, the songs are so similar too?
Over 20 years later (as of this post), this song still rings great and true!
Me encanta Chicago, tiene excelente guión, música, ritmo, vestuario y muy buenos actores.
this is quite a talent show
0:19 The lady talking to Roxie is Chita Rivera, who originated the role of Velma Kelley in the broadway production.
Really?! MORE importantly, she was Anita in West Side Story on Broadway! The original!
Soooo cooool
Perfect casting, that is what it all starts... ❤
Queen Latifah is a goddess.
oh my GOD, i am so excited. I'm playing mama morton in our schools musical.
Queen Latifah at her best
Love Chita Rivera's cameo.

Miss Latifah ,se comió a las otras actrices de un bocado con una sola canción. FANTÁSTICA!!!

The perect person to play this role. That's all^^
This was a great movie to see in the theater.

Jailhouse Tango, this scene, and the Richard Gere number are all legendary. An absolute 4 star movie.

She’s great 😊
Goddammit Queen Latifah has that shit going on she's gorgeous.
When you're good to Mama
LOVE THIS SCENE!!! :)
03/10/2020
This mom Morton is great.
I am Mexican, I am not of theater, nor of musical cinema, it is more or the opera I like, BUT, I am totally Chicago, the plot is great and totally timeless; the main role is Roxie, but the character of Velma is more recorded in the audience.
In Mexico 03/10/2020 they are presenting it in theater and the actresses are also great, especially Bibi Gaytán as Velma.
Ohhhhh this where Jinkx got this from!! Queen Latifah SLAYEDDDDDDDDD
She ATE! What a legend!
Chita also originated the role of Rose "Rosie" Alvarez in the original stage production of "Bye Bye Birdie".
Mother is mothering.
I love this movie, I have the movie and the soundtrack very good movie, Queen Latifah is awesome in this movie 😀👍👏👏👏👏👏👏!!!!! Great cast 👌😉!!!!! Peace out for now y'all 👋✌😎!!! Be blessed and safe out there 🙏!!!!!
This is not the full version!
She'll put OUT for you! I was loving that part
Latifah slays the kids!!!
Why is Queen Latifah's name the only one not in the title yet she's the only one singing?
I 💘 this one
Queen Latifah is very good here.
Queen was very good in this role.⭐️⭐️👍👍
lo mejor , hasta el ultimo detalle, slds desde Uruguay.
Should the title not read "Chicago: "When You're Good to Mama" (HD) - Queen Latifah? Her talent and pure presence is the reason this song/role was so amazing. So... what's up with that Miramax?
Classic
Found this so sexy when I was a kid
I don't blame you...

She is beautiful
Queen Is a rare Diamond
*LYRICS*
And now, ladies and gentlemen
The Keeper of the Keys, the Countess of the Clink
The Mistress of Murderers Row
Matron Mama Morton
Ask any of the chickies in my pen
They'll tell you I'm the biggest mother hen
I love them all and all of them love me
Because the system works, the system called reciprocity
Got a little motto
Always sees me through
When you're good to Mama
Mama's good to you
There's a lot of favors
I'm prepared to do
You do one for Mama
She'll do one for you
They say that life is tit for tat
And that's the way I live
So, I deserve a lot of tat
For what I've got to give
Don't you know that this hand
Washes that one, too?
When you're good to Mama
Mama's good to you
If you want my gravy
Pepper my ragù
Spice it up for Mama
She'll get hot for you
When they pass that basket
Folks contribute to
You put in for Mama
She'll put out for you
The folks atop the ladder
Are the ones the world adores
So boost me up my ladder, kid
And I'll boost you up yours
Let's all stroke together
Like the Princeton crew
When you're strokin' Mama
Mama's strokin' you
So what's the one conclusion
I can bring this number to?
When you're good to Mama
Mama's good to you (ah yeah)
A long battle took place between the agents of Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones over billing on the movie poster. In the end, "diagonal billing" was settled upon - as depending on which way you read it (top to bottom or left to right), both appear to get top billing.
I like it😍
beutiful movie.
Mae West would have played this brilliantly in my opinion I love Queen Latifah, have not seen another Mama as good.
margaret sayers Yes!
I think Queen Latifah is sort of challenging thar Mae West persona in this performance.
Honestly, sickest beat in this movie

I want that dress.
No doubt 👍😉!!!! That dress is the bomb 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥!!!!!! That scene is so awesome 👍😀😀. You go Queen 👑 Latifah!!! Peace out for now my friend 👋, from Bunn NC 👋💖😀✌!!!!!!
Jesus the comments here are disappointing. Am I the only straight male who sees Queen Latifah as the amazing actress that she is and not just “BOOOBS!” 🙄
When I saw this in the theater with my then GF, I had literally no clue she could act or sing like that. Opened my damn eyes in a big hurry.
As epic as this song is, I have to take a moment to give great respect to Chita Rivera 0:14 - the original Velma Kelly from the Broadway musical.
I’ve noticed in all the comment sections to a Chicago musical song/number there are a handful of comments talking about the philosophical point of views and the little contexts I don’t normally notice. I haven’t seen any for this number and can’t come up with any myself.
Didn't realize this wasn't the entire song so that kind of sucks but really I wanted to say that Queen Latifah was IN that movie and is singing this song, but her name doesn't appear in the title of your video.
It should.
She is stand out talent and should have the credit.
Isn't that what you're always telling us?
So why do we need to tell you?
That 👗❤❤
