CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Velma (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and the murderers row convicts sing the number "Cell Block Tango".
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A starry-eyed would-be star discovers just how far the notion that "there's no such thing as bad publicity" can go in this screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Chicago, originally directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse. In the mid-'20s, Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger) is a small-time chorus dancer married to a well-meaning dunderhead named Amos (John C. Reilly). Roxie is having an affair on the side with Fred Casley (Dominic West), a smooth talker who insists he can make her a star. However, Fred strings Roxie along a bit too far for his own good, and when she realizes that his promises are empty, she becomes enraged and murders Fred in cold blood. Roxie soon finds herself behind bars alongside Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a sexy vaudeville star who used to perform with her sister until Velma discovered that her sister had been sleeping with her husband. Velma shot them both dead, and, after scheming prison matron "Mama" Morton hooks Velma up with hotshot lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), Velma becomes the new Queen of the scandal sheets. Roxie is just shrewd enough to realize that her poor fortune could also bring her fame, so she convinces Amos to also hire Flynn. Soon Flynn is splashing Roxie's story -- or, more accurately, a highly melodramatic revision of Roxie's story -- all over the gutter press, and Roxy and Velma are soon battling neck-to-neck over who can win greater fame through the headlines. A project that had been moving from studio to studio since the musical opened on Broadway in 1973, Chicago also features guest appearances by Lucy Liu and Christine Baranski.

Catherine's eyes are so intense during the performance, I feel intense tigress from this scene.
Eyes and voice
yeah, so true!
She’s playing a convict, but her intensity makes me think she killed that person
Catherine Zeta Jones is off-the-chain brilliant in this. Not to demean her other performances, but I think this performance will dominate her legacy. For good reason. The acting, singing, dancing... she was the driving force, despite the other phenomenal performances from Zellweger and Gere.
She's incredible here. So intense and focused that she blows everyone else away, along with her previous roles.
Yeah, except I always wonder why she won for Best Supporting Actress when she is clearly a lead role along with Zellweger
@@lflagr right!
Catherine Zeta Jones is well outstanding in this movie furthermore winning the Oscar.
@@lflagr Roxy is always the lead, Catherine just fit into the Velma Kelly role, more.
Who would possibly say that the Glee version is better than this? These are trained professional actresses and dancers who are capable of immensely complicated dance routines; the kids on Glee are...well...kids. This kind of precision is impossible to fake. The Glee version was pretty good, but it lacked the emotion that comes from these ladies here. Between the Chicago movie and the Glee cover, the movie wins.
Naw, this is better than Glee
How about the Broadway shows? Do they come close to this performance? Im really curious.
Glee was full of performers who were did various gigs such as broadway, professional dancing, and singing. Obviously the movie that had a $45 million budget had a better performance than the tv show that probably spent $1 million per episode, but let’s not discredit the performers on Glee and act like they’re not professionals in their own right.
@@ExpatLifeKorea - I have seen Chicago on stage 2 times,. it is wonderful,.. BUT I have to say the movie edges out the on stage performance, it is just more broad spectrum in is entirety.
@@cleigh8753 Thanks for sharing your experience. I missed watching Chicago during their international tour here in Seoul KR. I agree with you. When I watched Dreamgirls on stage, i was a bit disappointed. It just paled in comparison to the 2006 film version.
Catherine Zeta-Jones was phenomenal in this movie!
And pregnant.
THIS IS MY FAVE SONG IN THE MOVIE
The direction when Zeta Jones is in the cell talking but then immediately turns to the man with the camera and stops and smile is so amazing..
the early 2000's had some really good musicals and then they stopped making them.this one...a classic.
You spoke too soon! Les Miserables.
FYI: written in 1975 . . .
this is the most iconic dance in cinematic history
To be honest
Velma stole the show
Lol, three crimes now 😂
I've never watched Chicago but i really love how female-empowering this song is! I also love how Velma has this "authrority" aura around her everytime she sings. Such power!
Won't really say that a song about murder is "female empowerment" 😬
@@yespls4184 like rioting is thug-empowering.
@@yespls4184 you’re being dense by not listening to the literal chorus of the song
@@alazjaw.8968 Nobody deserves to be shot because they were chewing gum too loud.
@@somelittlellama4186 dense
I adore this. Pffff everyone talking about Glee -_-
y e s
Yeah it's annoying.
They only Think of Glee, and not about the Disney villains parody.
That one is Well made
They don’t even do the whole song with all the parts
It takes place in the 20s. Its about a girl named Roxy Heart who wants to be famous so she sleeps with this guy (who says he will make her a star)... she finds out he lied and shoots him then goes to jail. Meanwhile this famous star Velma Kelley is in jail killing her husband and sister. So both girls try to use their crimes to leverage publicity and maintain fame, ect...
Spread eagle 😂
With Cath? Oh my! YES!!!
🦅
I don't watch Glee. I didn't even know they did a cover. And now I know to never look it up.
It's actually not bad, just not as good as this
Glee didn't bring me here. I did. And I like the dance routine on this one WAY better, and Catherine Zeda Jones is just flawless
I'm a huge Gleek and I watched the glee version first. Then I came here and watched this, then Chicago. There's huge differences between Glee version and this. And of course this is better. You can feel the anger.
She is stunning holy
This is amazing. Velma is definitely one of my dream roles.
и Я мечтаю сыграть роль велмы
CZJ was never in doubt for that BSA Oscar. Amazing.
Catherine Zeta Jones is an absolute fox.
the dancer in me is freaking out! THIS DANCE LOOKS SO MUCH FUN
This was my favorite part of the musical how each women told their story love this scene!!! talented and amazing
Velma’s a badass. She killed two people, a dude included, and then gave an amazing performance while facing down the police. Like, wow. 👌🏻
Very talented young woman, Catherine Zeta Jones did a hell of a good job for this role
Zeta-Jones earning every bit of her oscar statue
i actually think that both of them are amazing. never comparing a cover with the original...
I forgot Mya was in this movie!
i just realized she was choking her sister oml
who?
@@malloryfallon6394 she's choking the girl on "I didn't do it" meaning that's exactly what she did 😂😂😂
0:16 if you pause and look at how they are standing and are positioned you could see that veronica is holding Velma’s husbands hand and he has his hands on Veronica’s hips im pretty sure you know what that symbolizes
I love this song! Especially with Cicero! (Sorry if I spelt it wrong)
I looove Mya's part man!
Why is everybody comparing this with the glee cover? They are 2 diffrent styles of the song, and they are both good. Music isn't about putting the same songs togheter in 1 box, it's about the genre.
Even how much I love Glee and I love voices of them, Cell Block Tango cover was a disaster when we consider what their voices are capable of. When Catherine Zeta Jones says "He had it coming." and I feel the rage in it. But when Glee girls said it's just singing and there is no feeling. Saying "Glee version is better." is an insult. It's good but not better.
At 0:12 you can see Velma's husband's hand move away from her and touch Veronica's hip, and then Veronica touching his hand in return. It's a subtle nod to their affair.
Magnificent performance! Such a great dancers! ❤️ Loved the movie!
Epic number. Very well sung and choreographed. Well done.
I rewatch this solely for how fierce she is here. I love that wild vixen tigeress energy
Still slaps in 2021
Catherine Zeta-Jones added Velma's pose for the photographers in the Cell Block Tango.
During the song "Cell Block Tango" Hunyak (Ekaterina Chtchelkanova) speaks in Hungarian, but Chtchelkanova is Russian and her accent makes the speech very difficult to understand, even for native speakers of Hungarian.
Translated, she says "What am I doing here? They say my lover held down my husband while I chopped off his head. But it's not true. I am innocent. I don't know why Uncle Sam says I did it. I tried to explain at the police station but they didn't understand me."
Love the way how she lifts her chin on "done it"
Glee's version was nice, i really liked that, BUT ANYONE CAN'T BEAT CATHERINE ZETA-JONES
This scene is intense. Their acting is second to none!
Catherine i love youuuu youre the best
MYAAA
HER EYES!! Love when you can clearly see a characters emotions on screen Zeta is phenomenal.
Catherine Zeta Jones is a legend
My sister, Veronica, and I had this double act and my husband, Charlie, traveled around with us. Now for the last number in our act, we did these 20 acrobatic tricks in a row, one, two, three, four, five... Splits, spread eagles, back flips, flip flops, one right after the other. Well, this one night before the show we are in a hotel Cicero, the three of us, sittin' up in a hotel room, boozin' and havin' a few laughs and we ran out of ice, so I went out to get some. I come back, open the door And there's Veronica and Charlie doing Number Seventeen -the spread eagle. Well, I was in such a state of shock, I completely blacked out. I can't remember a thing. It wasn't until later, when I was washing the blood off my hands I even knew they were dead.
*dun*
THEY HAD IT COMING
This reminds me way too much of my best friend, Shannon. Shannon even looks and sound like a younger version of her, not to mention the personality.
oh my MYA 👏👏👏
The Sound Editing Is Stellar...Well Balanced... Basically Perfect
Playing this at my fathers funeral
Iconic people are so hard to replicate.
本当にこの映画は素晴らしかったですね。
この配役と、演出が、、、。幸せですありがとう。
Best musical ever made hands down
I'm 14 and I didn't even know this song was covered on Glee. I just like musicals...
that's the most awesome thing I ever listened to
I felt so weird watching this for the first time with my grandparents,
Chicago has been around since the 70s ... I'm sure that there are people out there who feel about this movie the way you do about Glee.
i love this part of the movie its my favorite :)
this version is not the "original" version, it's just the movie version. the original was the first time it appeared on broadway in the 70's. I've seen a couple broadway versions of this song, i've seen the glee version, i've seen this movie like 4 times, and last week i saw my best friend perform it with her group, and each one of them has it's own style, and there are probabbly a lot of versions i've never seen, so i don't know which one is "the best". i just enjoy it every time i see it :D
Catherine is brilliant
god i love this song..
This is fun to perform!!! Love
Does anybody else notice that if you look real close at Catherine she kind of jumps when the drum is hit at 0:37? Jw??
Treat a woman right and you may be spared from her wrath.
I WISH THAT THE GLEE EXIBITION WILL BE GREAT AS THIS EPIC PERFORMANCE
Mya is a beast..
I need to watch this movie because the music is really good
Watched some of the film in dance today at school and this is Amazing I had to look up the songs... amazing! :)

Deffo in the top 3 numbers from the musical
My personal list:-
-All That Jazz

-Mr Cellophane
nothing can beat this! even the talented glee cast! and that comes from a huge glee fan!!
Am I the only that thought it was funny when the Cicero girl say "The Spread Eagle"?
0:52 that look that damn look!
