When Dan heard we got a new robot in the office, Dan hopped at the chance to take a look at it to see if he could figure out what the actual use case is for one of these or if it's not worth the money... little did he know, this little fella would steal his heart.

Dan is such a great personality on camera. He's concise, objective, and his dry sense of humour just ties it all up. I'd really like to see more from him.
This is why we love his videos !

Dan is by far my favorite of the newer hosts, followed by alex. The mature down to earth way of speaking and somewhat dry humor just fits so much closer to the personality style I personally want to see in a tech channel space.
Nothing against the other hosts, just not my thing. I wonder if the analytics work out for or against my opinion.
Mostly agree with you, but I think of Alex as a veteran at this point.
Can you really say Alex is a new host at this point? But yeah Dan is awesome
Yes! Completely opposite of Jacob, who they are trying to shove on us on TechLinked. What an unnatural and unbearable guy he is. Even his writing is awful. Don't know what are they thinking.

I bet the camera crew would have a field day with it as a very expensive motion camera setup.
Not sure it is actually stable enough for that job really, and the carrying capacity while impressive could easily be eaten up by the camera gear. I'm sure you can use it for some very specific and probably really impressive shots as it does seem quite a capable motion platform for its size, but I don't think it really works more widely there. So great fun, and if you can get your boss to buy one you are going to enjoy it. But I don't think you will get the boss to buy one easily...
@@foldionepapyrus3441 it would be great for shots from an animals POV - holding 75lbs I think it could handle most camera gear, the hard part would be properly distributing the weird of the gear so it doesn't hinder the robot.
Im imagining like a kids/family movie from an animals POV or even just specific shots where a low down moving POV is needed, similar to an animals POV.

Dan finally made a friend :)
Dan is by far my favorite person at LTT. His humor is effortless. Never change, Dan.
It might be useful for mounting a high ress camera and then use it to inspect sewer system, damaged buildings etc so you dont have to risk a person
True, unfortunately there was no discussion about transmission range for the controls, which was a surprising detail to miss... that would greatly determine its usability in various environments.
clicked as soon as i saw Dan was hosting! more Please!
Wow, I can't wait to see what it looks like to mount a really nice camera on top of it. Some really cool scenes would be possible from it's vantage point
Uh-huh. But you can get a cheap RC car for the same effect.
@@512TheWolf512 On most RC cars you can't mount a 4 kg camera. And even if you can, it can't turn in place.
@@jullit31 Yes, and the stabilization seems to be fairly good, too. You'd still probably need a steadicam in between, but still
I'd mount a rocket launcher.. so your camera mounted one could capture a cool explosion scene
@@jullit31 I rather wonder if it's something a drone couldn't do with the same result. I mean they have insane stabilisation and stuff. The only advantage I see is the load carrying capacity. A drone that can carry 4 kg would be really big I guess.
I love seeing cool stuff like this, but i have to agree that there aren't really that many uses, the entire time i was sitting here thinking it wasn't much more than a fancy RC car
Indeed, if they just added an extra leg or two so it can do impressive controlled rock crawl like stuff because of the entirely controllable ride height it would blow simpler RC vehicles away for ability to traverse complex terrain and angle its body where it wants. So being something between the Boston walking robots and a normal RC wheeled platform could give it a really great niche. But as the balancing and less than stable biped not so much, or at least I can't think of anything it can really do a normal RC car can't be made to do easily and probably better.
Pretty big flex at the RC park when yours can jump over things though. 😁
Did Dan just have a "boy and his dog" moment with a robot?
Feels like a really interesting camera platform, get you shots that you could never get with, like, an RC car. Would love a TechQuickie from Dan about what's cool about direct drive motors.
As an engineer I can say Dan’s perspective is highly valuable for the target audience of this product and products of this kind. Thanks Dan!
The only target audience I can see is people with too much money who want a cool but not very useful robot.
I really want someone to give it some sort of environmental awareness and navigation so that it can follow you around like a video game companion.
Yeah it has that it's called a camera
@@Lu-db1uf he said he wants the camera to follow him
@@Lu-db1uf Thank you for your insolence. This Robot out of the box definitely does not follow you around and navigate its environment autonomously. But with enough tinkering through raspberry pie I'm sure someone clever could make it do it and with how much personality it emulates that would be a lot of fun to see.
@@Lu-db1uf as far as I can tell it does not even have a camera.
With a more robust wheel, could use in certain industrial uses. Visual inspection (large diameter pipe, as example... would need to be a cleaner product like water). Strap some lights. Camera. An arm for taking UT readings on pipe.
I've been working on a general purpose AI for the USAF and this looks like it could be an ideal testbed for a mobile version, once it is upgraded with certain accessories. I'll call it the T-1. I'm sure nothing will go wrong.
You say: I'm making a general purpose AI for the USAF

Dan videos are always wonderful and this seemed like the perfect video for Dan to host.
I've seen a few videos on the Diablo robot, but this the first time I've ever seen it crash or fall on its "face"! Congrats on the achievement! 🤣🤣🤣
A camera rig would be awesome!
This was an excellent video, more robot reviews by Dan please.
It falling on it's face made me laugh so hard. You're a great host, Dan.
This is a cool concept for sure. I would want something I could put some kind of arm onto so it could interface with various yard tools. If this could be interfaced with a 360 camera and maybe a VR Headset, then you could remote control it around your yard and have an arm or two so it could hold garden tools for weeding, or cleaning up fallen branches, then being able to push a trash can out to the curb for collection. I'd be curious if it has routines already, or if it could be programmed to detect and calculate climbing up a flight of stairs by jumping. I can see some interesting uses, but it would need to be more of an open kit so that the user can customize what the robot is capable of. Would love to see more of these kinds of videos.
One potential use would be to add a pair of arm/manipulators and tools along with stereo cameras as an inspection device. Think similar to a IED inspection 'wheelbarrow' but general purpose 🙂🤷♂️
Interesting. This definitely seems like a toy version of something that could be much more useful in the future. I'd also take the headset for my future-tech stuff if I had that kind of money. But maybe when they put a bunch of extra tools and sensors on this, perhaps an integrated AI... and of course an easy to swap out battery so i dont have to wait for it to sleep... I might finally have the droid I've always wanted to follow me around all day helping do little things and just be a general life companion.
Well, it should be target as useful now and improve better for the future, in my opinion.
I dislike when people say, their product will be useful in the future.
This robot seem to be treated as more or less as a niche toy than actual daily usefulness for us as shown here.
A vacuum cleaning robot is more useful than this thing, in my eyes. Just saying. Lol.
Great to see robotics on this channel 😍
I could maybe see it being used to film a very specific shoots, Or if you could make a bigger 6 wheel version ( 3 wheels each side)for carrying heavier stuff.
Dan the man! Always enjoy him being able to show interesting tech and making the robot dance 😅
LTT is slowly becoming DTT and I am here for it!
I've found Dan very entertaining on Wan show, and now he's hosting videos?? Heck yeah!
Performs a lot like the winning robot at the DARPA Robotics Challenge. I got to see it drive around on its knees in after hours at the ready room for the challenge. If our university had one of these at its price, we could have at least made it past the start line and then attached a robotic arm to perform the tasks. The website shows it supports ROS, and that system was just starting to gain ground during the challenge, so I bet it has gotten much better today. LTT could mount a camera arm on this and use it for moving shots.
With that visor it looks like a robotic minion, you could always dress it up like Wall-e.
When the machines take over, I strongly believe Dan will be spared
I hope so. We still need that Christmas album.
No, he kicked robot…
Where I see it, is in movie making. It's nice platform for base of animatronics, or smart (programmable) props. It has two downsides: It can't travel over curb by itself, and has pretty low loading capacity. The vision-equipped one may be much more convinient, but at the same time it will have problem, when sensors are obscured.
Awesome hosting by Dan once again, getting better with each video. The editing of this video was just hilarious too! ❤
But can it piss beer in cup?
That’s actually very neat. I’m sure there’s gonna be a lot of people who will try and copy that. For a lot less and probably recycled materials
It’s not that unique, I believe Boston dynamics have had a similar robot for years.
@@conorstewart2214 there are a lot of tinkerers out there that will try and copy those designs.
Look at the Nano- hand from Nvidia
Looks like it could be good for a testing/expansion platform for a highschool/college team. Get it to work with an arm or stable platform for a camera. Get it to work with your own light sensor as a line follow robot and such or some "cheap" components for a battle bot for those direct drive motors and platform pieces. Getting motors and gearboxes alone can cost quite a bit.
Use case I can think of
1) Moving camera, it looks stable enough for a professional cinema camera (altho 4kg limit is a bit less)
2) Dancing to crab wave. Honestly it does so well here
3) Possibly some university course for computer vision, with custom cameras mounted on top rather than the expensive version with built-in camera
Looking forward to more domestic robot reviews.
"It has an emergency stop because this thing is really, really dangerous"
Dan working HARD to sell people on this thing
... And it's working
I could see it being a good inspection drone. You don't need top speed but something that can jump and recover would be awesome in crawl spaces or tight fit industrial areas.
Coupled with a visor /ar headset this could make an impressive search and rescue tool, possibly modified slightly to allow for rougher terrain. Collapsed building, biohazard sites, nuclear investigation, there are a few applications that might justify its existence but none that I can see right out the box
Robut
I thought this was from Diablo 4 lol.
Putting a camera on this and using it for firefighting or like hazmat situations seems like a really good use case. The type of thing where you could send it into someplace that's too dangerous to send a human to check on something or do a final sweep to make sure you got everyone out of a burning building. And that price tag isn't that crazy all things considered. I could actually see my work getting one for hazmat situations.
4:40 Reminds me of what my videography instructor once told me: things can't fall off the floor.
Cameras, Dan, it can carry a pretty significant camera on top and with a skilled operator, and maybe some advanced coding for smarties, it can become the ultimate camera rig.
Once you mount something on top of it, it can be a very versitile platform. Add a camera and you can get amazing shots. Add an arm, add a saw, add a sensor, add a gun, add a brush... Sure- not it's not an item for everybody, but for a mere 3k $ there are a ton of industries who could utilize it.
Seeing the little guy dance was so adorabe!
Its so cute! LOL. In my mechatronics class, I'm kinda glad our robots were just stationary arms because I guarantee you with these things we'd just be chasing each other around the shop with them.
10:10 That dance music made me chuckle
I think the robot would be great for towing things or having a basket on top for things like hikes for people who are disabled but can walk but not carry a pack. I'm stretching to find a use, that was it.
Always a nice time when relatable and dry humour Dan is on camera. Love the DAN show too.
I see this used in factories and construction sites. Going to inspect things in spaces that are too uncomfortable or dangerous or both for human technitians. Or even repetitive. I believe one BD robot dogs is used in one such site for inspection where it basically patrols the site and using visual comparison it looks at things and if anything about it looks different to how it's supposed to, notifies the operators. In construction it could be a cable runner and again used to inspect the insides of pipes and ducts.
This particular model could be more of a "proof of concept" model or a development platform for modules and procedures.
I can see some niche uses in maintenance situations if you were to attach a camera to it. this would extend to some construction projects, maybe bomb squad uses, and/or search and rescue. However, I would have to "play" with one to really see its potential and thats a steep entry price tag
I would mount a fan on it. This heat here in germany is killing me... Repositioning the fan at a whim by driving it around would be so goooood
Attach a little trailer to it, buy a camera and depth sensor, get some ML and have it follow you around like a backpack
Loving Dan - really great delivery, humour, analysis. Just a bang on guy for tech analysis videos.
the rim around the LEDs makes it kinda look like Bender. And honestly for what you're getting, under $3k is a steal. Industrial robots are always super expensive.
I work in a smallIT office, and I HOWLED when it tried to go over the ramp. One of the guys was like what's so funny? And I showed him and we both howled. Thanks Dan the man!
This is probably the funniest LMG video I've seen. Dan is great!
You could mount some lidar and ultrasonic sensors and use it as an indoor mapping tool. It could be useful for a logistic company.
agree🎉
I love the little side to side dance thing lol
I'm currently studying robotics in mechanical engineering, Dan's conclusion at the end is the closest reason I could see as to why you might practically want a direct drive system for one of these robots? Direct drive makes a ton of sense for certain applications, since they have very low backlash and they can centralize the weight on each joint to simplify dynamics, but I imagine most practical rolling robots could benefit from a cheaper motor and a gear train/cable driven system? No claims to expertise, though.
Great video, good explanation. Pls more of these! 🙂
The Crab Rave was unexpected and wonderful. On a more serious note I immediately thought of this as a platform for developing assistive technology for people with motor impairments; and in the world of assistive tech this isn’t that relatively expensive.
Plausable uses for the price would be putting camera/IR on it and use it to search collapsed buildings or such cases where dropping down on the wheels to go under things would be beneficial, while still having option to stand up to go over some obstacles. I'd still rather have that sort of design but with 4 wheeled legs so it could actually climb stairs etc. Two legged robots are amazing feat of self balancing tech but really limits what they can actually do...
such a cool piece of tech! thx for showing us :)
Aww loved the duo dance at the end.
Yo Dan, you need to look at the individual motors, whether as a SC piece or a full LTT one. I'd be way more interested in that. It seems to me this robot is more of a showcase for the underlying tech than anything else.
as a learning platform for ROS this thing seems really interesting, would of loved to try and work out how to do 2.5d path finding with it while i was studying. The price point almost makes sense for universities
Edit: As an additional note, most robotics that uses ROS has the motor control stuff obfuscated behind the ROS communication layer, that a normal thing with that type of robotics development, you don't want to be constantly fiddling with the drivers on the robot while also developing an actual robotics system.
Love this guy, definitely a different tempo, but I like it. Sporadic jazz type beat.
9:21 Custom Ubuntu distro running on that Pi - Arctic Penguin
You could build this from a hoverboard for drive motors; 2 servo motors and two RC disc brakes for height control. And achieve the same thing for 400 bucks.
7:52 2m/s also known as 7,2km/h, IMO, pretty impressive.
I can see these being used to collect and process trash in a landfill type scenario. Maybe give it 2 arms and a mini trash compactor in its torso. Maybe give it little tank treads and paint it yellow and gray as well...
I love the little dance the robot does! 😂😂
My mind was torn. Video thumbnail with Dan and a cool looking robot. Which is the reason to click video? I still dont know, but I loved it. Dan always kills it. And the robot is definitely a amazing piece of tech
9:23 OMG how does a robot look so sad when it falls? This thing is better at human emotions than AI.
Cool! You should make a video on those motors! GoKart?
I did want to see a camera strapped to its top. I also enjoy the penguin flop recovery mode.
Yep. Mobile robot platforms have been around since the 80's, usually some robot lab at a uni trying to sell a few to other student groups, in a "add your own AI."
the editing truly fits Dan personality, the sad robot fall really got mexD
9:21 - The failed jump here has me dying! The way it just falls over is comical.
The ending dance is so adorable xD
I can only see this as educational tool or base for further development. Remote viewing can be achieved better with flying drones (not restricted by terrain), and carrying things can be achieved better with normal 4 wheeler (more stable & more load).
I can see this being used as a learning kit or example kit where they might try and use the kit then make orders for the motors for their own solustions maybe
