  • This homemade snuffle mat is machine washable and requires no sewing skills to make!
    Materials:
    - Canvas fabric, cut to desired mat size
    - About 2 yards of fleece
    - Scissors
    - Marker
    - Ruler
    1. Cut fleece into strips about 1.5 by 7 inches long. Varying sizes are okay! You'll need 200-300 strips, depending on the size of your mat.
    2. Mark your canvas. Starting about 2 inches from the edge, mark a grid of dots each 1 inch apart.
    3. Make a small cut at each dot, about 1/2 inch long.
    4. Tie a knot in the center of a fleece strip. Thread both ends through a slit in the canvas until the knot is anchored at the back. Repeat until all slits are occupied with fleece strips.
    5. Sprinkle kibble or treats throughout the mat and let your dog or cat use their nose to find them!

Thank you for the video, making one for my kitten, which I found in my back yard he was about 2-weeks had to bottle feed, he's on pate food now with little chucks, he is now 6 weeks, and loves to play. By the way great job!

What keeps the dog from pulling the knot through the back? I have a strong chewer and am afraid he's pull the knotted pieces right through and eat them.

Lovely mat and video. Was looking on Amazon for different mats and was unsatisfied with the ones I was seeing and the reviews that came with them. Love this simple DIY mat, will def. be making!

    Can i use felt fabric

Do you think it´s possible to make it with a fine cotton fabric like voile, instead of fleece? Fleece is a synthetic fabric, right? I'm not sure if it's totaly safe...

I would use old fleece from thrift store. You can cut up old percale too but you will have fraying strings

@@nuggetthebeagle agree, not a good idea at all

Yes, polar fleece is synthetic. Some are made from recycled plastic bottles.
Cotton voile is SO THIN it would make a terrible choice for this project as it would potentially shred in the wash. Most garments made from cotton voile are hand wash or dry-clean only due to its fragile nature (it is woven cotton fibers). Using a cotton KNIT could help prevent frayed edges - so the suggestion to cut up t-shirts was a good one (cut strips parallel to the bottom of the t-shirt). Try to find organic cotton t-shirts to be sure the fabric doesn't have pesticide residues. The cotton knit will roll up on itself and give you a different look. ALWAYS check toys for fraying / damage to prevent ingestion.

That's great. But I'm wondering whether a piece of hessian would work? Wouldn't it be a time-saver? 🙂

But it might not wash well. And if the pups are eating off the mat isn't going to get messy. It could work if you stabilize it - maybe tack the hessian to a canvas piece after you have done the snuffle pieces....

Do the strips come out in the wash from agitation?

These mats develop bad habit to pick up everything from the ground. Dog should eat only from a bowl. I wish someone told me when my dog was a puppy.

My dog dumps her food out of her dish and then eats it 😅!

Speaking as a trainer: You could counteract that with teaching a take it and drop it cue. Your dog isn’t permanently stuck in bad habits but it’s best to catch them before they’re habits of course. Not all mental enrichment is for all dogs. Find what works for you. Some people have slow feeder bowls and food dispensing toys that also work to get more of a mental work out 😁
