  • A snuffle mat is an enrichment activity for your dog to help mentally stimulate them during independent play time. Dogs need enrichment in their lives every single day! One of the best ways to engage their seeking behavior is to involve their nose.
    If your dog exhibits frustrating behaviors like being hyperactive, chewing on things he/she shouldn't be, or even excessive barking, adding to their daily enrichment can help alleviate some of these behaviors. Good mental and physical stimulation every single day is one of the important tools in a happy healthy life for your dog.
    Making a snuffle mat only requires three supplies: scissors, fleece, and rubber sink mats. Sprinkle in a couple of kids that need a fun arts & crafts project or give yourself a break from the screens for a calming, therapeutic activity by yourself and boom - you have a snuffle mat for your dog!
    Record your dog the first time you give them their snuffle mat - it's a lot of fun to remember and even share how excited they get in trying to find every single piece in the fluffy puzzle.
    Switch up the mat by creating different pockets with different shapes from the fabric to provide additional challenges.
    If you have a smarty pants dog that figures out they can flip and shake the mat to hack the system, tie a longer piece of fleece around one or two of the corners and then loop it around a table leg or pillar. Get creative in upping the challenge!

    What is the one toy or enrichment item that your dog just can't live without? I think every dog should have a snuffle mat for sure but my dog's "can't live without" item is the Kong! Thanks! I have an old sink mat and left over fleece to do this with…my doodle will love it! And my granddaughter can help me. I bet our dogs are glad they have us as “dog moms”! 😉Thanks so much for sharing!

    Hi Sandra, how much fabric did you use for one mat? Would a yard be sufficient?

  • @MikaelaAryanna

    Hi Sara! Do you think a cut up 50”x60” fleece blanket would be enough for one or two snufflemats?

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  Před 3 lety +3

      Yes! I love recycling old fleece blankets for projects like this. That should give you enough strips for a snuffle mat.

    Love the pocket idea but what would have made me feel the vid was really helpful if you could include details on how long and wide are the stripes and how many needed per sq metre/inch.

      Hi! Thanks for the feedback. I craft like I bake - really just eyeballing the ingredients. That's a great suggestion to measure everything out and provide those measurements for those watching. Next time I attempt a new one for the dogs, I'll be sure to include them!

      @@SaraOndrako Thanks so much for the reply - some of us aren't so talented to do it off the cuff like you so the extra details help a lot :-)

      It's called a sink mat, sometimes the term "sink grid mat" is used. You can get them at Dollar Tree.

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  Před 2 lety +1

      Do you mean for cleaning? The mat stays in tact and you can run it through a cold cycle in the laundry using a dye and scent free detergent.

    Do you ever wash these things??

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  Před 3 lety +2

      I do. I use a non-perfumed detergent. You can also simply hose them off and leave them outside in the sun to dry. The UV kills a lot of bacteria on the surface of the mat but can fade colors over time.

      I think they look really nasty - no way will they get a deep, true cleaning.

    • @TiaraPoodles
      @TiaraPoodles Před 3 lety

      WHAT? They put food in this? Good Lord.
      Again, nasty.

      The fat in the "treats" begins to go rancid as soon as it is exposed to air per Dr. Karen Becker. Just think of the kibble down in this for a few days or longer - PLUS you are teaching a dog to eat off blanket material ..... and also some dogs could eat some of that blanket material.
      In a day and age when the best holistic care water bowl for our mature, well-behaved dogs is told to be Pyrex-brand glass to avoid impurities - this "enrichment" goes just the opposite direction.
      So as I am being educated on this fad enrichment toy, I now know what that "bonus" toy was that was sent my way last month from the person making fabulous rope toys and I promptly sent it back, as again, it was not something I saw as beneficial. Doubling down on that opinion. Yes, my opinion, from over half a century as a canine professional.

    Dont the dogs rip them apart. Ciuld be dangerous if they eat yhe fleece.

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  Před 7 měsíci

      Most dogs are looking to get the food out as opposed to engaging with the snuffle mat itself. To be on the safe side, supervise your dog while they are enjoying this enrichment and trade them for the snuffle mat with a treat to take it away once all of the food is gone.

  • @TiaraPoodles

    Nasty.
