  • 2018 Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island
United States Marine Corps Recruit Training, commonly known as "boot camp", is a 13-week program of initial training that each recruit must successfully complete in order to serve in the United States Marine Corps. All enlisted individuals entering the Marine Corps, regardless of eventual active or reserve duty status, will undergo recruit training at one of the two Marine Corps Recruit Depots (MCRD): Parris Island, South Carolina, or San Diego, California. Male recruits from the 8th, 9th and 12th recruiting districts (areas west of the Mississippi River except Louisiana, and including parts of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan) are sent to MCRD San Diego. All recruits from the 1st, 4th and 6th recruiting districts and all female recruits are sent to Parris Island. Those desiring to become officers attend training at Officer Candidates School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA. Footage from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.
Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island (often abbreviated as MCRD PI) is an 8,095 acres (32.76 km2) military installation located within Port Royal, South Carolina, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south of Beaufort, the community that is typically associated with the installation. MCRD Parris Island is used for the training of enlisted Marines. Male recruits living east of the Mississippi River and female recruits from all over the United States report here to receive their initial training. Male recruits living west of the Mississippi River receive their training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California, but may train at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island by special request.

I'm getting out next week after doing four years. Watching this video remembering all the good times four years ago.. unsolicited advice; just don't quit. A lot of it is a mind game. Just put your best effort into it and give 100% effort all the time. Also, when everyone is screaming, don't think you can just mouth the words and not put out any volume. The drill instructors notice if you're faking it and then they will just pick on you and make you scream more.

4 months from now, when i can finally say i did it. Ill come back to this and compare who i am and how i changed if at all ...
As of right now, i am a 19 year old male from ohio. Ive wanted to be a marine since i was about 13 years old for the same reasons i still do. I go to meps here in 3 days, on the 10th and eleventh and my recruiter says i should go to basic late july or early august. I have (the military doesnt know about this, im unmedicated for all) bad adhd, anxiety, and likely autism. All are easily dealt with as long as my mind and body are engaged in proper proportions. Its boredom that causes my worst moments. Ive always felt disrespected and undervalued, but, not only by other people, but by myself, so i allow it, because maybe i deserve it, i havent really done anything, mentally ive never had to try hard, and physically, ive always been in good enough shape to at the bare minimum keep up with everyone around me. And so my discipline and respect for authority as far as school police (except sheriffs) and political officials has always been extremely low, because ive never had to really try hard to work around what i knew was their bullshit agenda. I grew up in a lower middle class to mid range middle class white family, i went to a good school and was always comfortable at home. Always treated with basic human decency. I guess ive only ever been the only person who was actually hard on myself. I expect to gain a sense of self respect and value from the corp, i expect to have achieved one great accomplishment and thus recognize myself as more, if even by slightly, than the rest of the nobodies in this world. I expect my mental acuity to increase, my performance under pressure to increase, and thus experience a reduction in my anxiety. And obviously, the complete inability to work around an authority figures instructions and the forced sense of discipline the military enforces i feel would benefit my lack of discipline and respect for authority by allowing me to rise higher in the chain of command whether it be an office job, a blue collar, or whatever. So when i get out, i will be altogether a better man. But we will see, ill come back to this when i finish basic.

I arrived on Parris Island on April 1, 1956, Platoon 115, Alpha Co., 1st Trng. Bn. Exactly one week later, SSgt. Matthew McKeon took Platoon 71 into Ribbon Creek and five recruits drowned. We were on the Island before DIs wore campaign covers, and in those days they used their fists to teach discipline. We carried M1 rifles because M14 and M16's had not been invented. We were the first to use pugil sticks, and we used them while dressed in utility trousers, utility covers, boondockers, and scivvy shirts---no helmets, no face masks, no padded vests---and we just knocked the hell out of each other. Our DI's were veterans of WWII and Korea, places like Tarawa, Iwo, and the Chosen Reservoir, and because of what they had experienced, they had no pity on us. I was 18 when I arrived on the Island and I'm now 81, but I can tell you honestly that I remember it like it was yesterday. I can also tell you that what you learn on Parris Island will help to guide you throughout your life. Semper Fi, young Marines.

While in college, I joined the Marine Corps in 1967 in order to avoid the draft. Between my junior and senior year I had to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) for 10 weeks over the summer. When I graduated in May 1968 I was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the Marine Corps and attended 6 months at The Basic School at Quantico, VA to become a Marine infantry platoon commander.
I ended up in Vietnam in December 1968 as my first full time job out of college. What an education that was. Nearly a year of fighting in Vietnam as a platoon commander because for the last month and a half, I was brought back to the battalion to become the battalion assistant S-1 (administration).
I joined as a college kid that had no idea what I wanted to do in life and because of the draft during the Vietnam War, I joined the Marines to avoid being drafted into the Army.
I ended up serving 21 years in the Marines with another 2 years in combat in Latin America.
OCS was not much different than Boot Camp except that our DI's had the say as to who they would want to be in combat if we were to become officers where as the goal of Boot Camp is to graduate as many recruits as possible. In those days, we had the sham mental and physical stress but our emphasis was on leadership in combat while Boot Camp was about producing enlisted Marines.
OCS and the 6 months of The Basic School prepared me for leading Marines in combat, it did not prepare me for combat in Vietnam. Arriving in Vietnam and taking command of a platoon was worlds of difference than the training I received.
First, in OCS and in TBS we trained with M-14 rifles, but in Vietnam I was issued an M-16. I had seen photographs of M-16's but I had never used one nor had I ever fired it or disassembled it. My Marines in Vietnam had to show me how to do that. That was embarrassing. Their platoon commander had never been trained on the weapons the were using in Vietnam.
It appears times have changed for the better since then.

@@Maytag_warrior When you enlist, you are allowed to choose what you do. If you're drafted, you're SOL and the military chooses for you. Famous instance of this happening: WW2, initially lots of people volunteered, but eventually the military decided to only allowed volunteers - why? Because they were getting too many people volunteering for the "cool" jobs and not enough people wanting to be cooks, logistics staff, etc. So they just drafted 'em instead. I imagine for Vietnam you'd want to at least know what you're getting into by signing up, instead of having some random person send you wherever they like.

These guys might be scared, but they could have a lot of opportunity in front of them if they take advantage of it.
My son-in-law passed through here about a decade ago. He had essentially failed out of his first semester of college and enlisted in the Corps. Went to Parris Island and then to NAS Pensacola for training as air crew on the C-130. Worked his way up the ranks to Sergeant (E-5). Decided he had higher aspirations and applied for MECEP (Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program). Was accepted (few are) and was sent to OCS at Quantico in the fall of 2016. Graduated from OCS in March 2017, promoted to Staff Sergeant (E-6) and returned at Corps expense to the Naval ROTC program at the same college from which he had failed (all officers must hold a four-year degree). Graduated Summa Cum Laude in 3 years was commissioned 2nd Lt (O-1) in May 2020 (the Corps can teach you a lot about focus and discipline). As do all newly commissioned Marine officers, he spent 7 months at The Basic School at Quantico (just like every Marine a rifleman, every Marine officer an infantry officer). He's just been posted back to NAS Pensacola - this time for flight training; he'll now be flying the plane not loading it.
