Was working at the Minneapolis Air Port back in 2015 and Black Francis happened to buy a couple things from my stand. Had no idea who he was until watching Fight Club a few months later and started listening to Where Is My Mind on repeat. He had given me a business card a long with a 20 dollar tip and just so happened to keep it in my wallet and realized exactly who I had a brief conversation with. Crazy experience. I think he liked the fact that I had no idea who he was but would figure it out and appreciate it in time. Solid real human being
what were you selling
Business card for what?
$20 tip? Why? I would imagine Black Francis can walk pretty much anywhere without getting recognised
Glad we can confirm that he’s real
I would love to hear a conversation with him and an interviewer who is closer to his wavelength. Good dude.
The Tony Hawk interview is pretty good
I just love him
Right?
Hes the man
i love how their sets go song to song no breaks. its a pixies tsunami
Thats like how they tracked Doolittle
do they play the old songs mainly or do they mix in the new ones`?
Just like Hüsker Dü did. Song after song with a max 1 min break every once in a while
Got that from albini
A wave of mutilation, if you will
I always love hearing him talk, because you can practically inset the F-bombs he is thinking then stops just short of it.
Found this interview so refreshing. I enjoyed that Charles for the most part wanted no part of this but a few times was drawn in to the conversation and made some salient comments. Love his honesty frankly that he dislikes doing media. Not many in his line if work would ever be as up front for fear of tampering with their bands brand. I like down to earth people that just happen to have unique skill sets that put them in this space where some dont feel confortable. This adds another layer of why I enjoy The Pixies music. It somehow fuses their music with what I imagined him to be like. more of this please.
Charles is a one in a billion kind of talent. All these stunning evergreens about UFO's and this weird place, they've just been pouring out of him for a solid 35 years. LEGEND
At 5:57 man, that wink was so creepy and unnecessary, or even 'unnecessarily creepy'.
Great interview though!
Frank is so interesting to listen to he made this half-hour flew away.
Gotta love this man
interviewer really poor...Francis doesn't even look at him for most of it
@@patrickjudeclafferty That's not really the interviewer's fault though. He actually managed to make Frank feel at ease during this.
Frank's definitely an introvert, perhaps an INTJ, and INTJs sometimes avoid eye contact because, for them, maintaining it during conversations can feel quite uncomfortable or even unnecessary.
@@youreallygotmenow4855 Interviewer came across as unfamiliar with Charles work or even how serious and intellectual he is ...like all happy clappy radio jock and that wink...just wrong !
The first live concert I ever saw was The Pixies at the Col Ballroom in Davenport IA. I was so blessed to be able to attend.
In 2004 I saw the Pixies in Barcelona lost in the middle of thouzands of fans... In 2017 I saw them in Carcassonne... small french city... small amphithéâtre... the VIP seat were not sold and I and my friends were allowed to take it ... I met Francis and his wife and sons in the streets eating an Ice cream... I took a picture with him. Unforgetable day ! Defenitly my favorite band!
Honesty is the purest art
Good quote, I’ll give u credit
@@Xxxxxrrr6464 Everything's a quote.
@@Xxxxxrrr6464 Have that one on me, you superior species
You n I bless the earth with our existence;)
@@Xxxxxrrr6464 Maybe. Take care.
Would love to hear Rick Beato go over Frank's first 3 solo albums. IMO his best stuff.
He couldve milked 3 albums outta teenager of da year
He's one of the few artists when I listen randomly to any of his work I like instantly with no "grows on me" curve. Go Charles you the man.
Great interview. I loved the flow of the conversation and that pigment on a stick statement!
It’s always a bummer when you’re a huge fan of a band/artist and then you see an interview like this and realize how burnt out or tired they are of songs that mean so much to you lol
You might want to get used to that.
No, he loves music/performing. He’s tired of sh1tty interviewers.
Can't even watch this because of the interviewer jeez
Wow Charles talking is always hypnotic. I love it.
That's the same feeling I got.
He's refreshingly honest and an engaging conversationalist.
I got lucky time wise doing College Radio in Boston and seeing The Pixies with 30 other people at TT the Bears.
Enjoyed this interview on many levels
Kayt Hester the artist is one of my best friends!!! I love that he shouted her out!!!
I had to stop listening and check out her work on Instagram when he mentioned it. Masking tape artist-how interesting!
6:11 I love this guy
Great interview, on both sides
the amazing frank black
Charles is a nice person. He's very talented and a well respected musician.. I hope he hits it really big one day. Hits it big in the way he wants to hit it big.
They haven't hit it big?
Who cares?
I'd ask the Secret Sisters for an encore. Those girls are tremendous.
Would love to see his paintings.
What about the part where 👏🏻👏🏻
I saw the pixies twice this summer august 2023 nyc pier 17 and bridgeport conn they were GREAT
Love the diddys
No set list, Tom just cannot believe it. He's so green!
Just heard that bit as I was looking at your comment!
If I ever get to meet The Almighty Charles Francis Kitteridge Thompson IV I will give him Awesome Coffee!!!
Pure is the Pixies. I would like if the Frank Black/Pixies dichotomy was smashed and he played a few Frank Black songs in his Pixies gigs going forward. Pong? Western Star etc
“Now virtually everyone’s singing a popular 🎵
Imagine how would it be a kingdom called Velouria, that is what the interviewer should say.
need a Catholics tour
There's a different vibe in Scotland for Pixies
Spot on
Different, as in special? or just different. Lol
Oh exactly. When you play your last song, without announcing 'this is the last song' you then exit leaving your audience wanting more. That wanting is part of the experience. Some things are just so cliched.
So Frank, can you tell all your fans how you got started in music ? .. Frank - " Well I don't know, you know .. whatever, you know " .. Great bloke, very down to earth.. no fakery.
Beard man gives off a Dave Rubin aroma.
No he doesn’t
Interesting guy.
he's definitely NOT a phony
Kim and Francis both talented was friction between the two.. but 😮 the music and live shows ❤
I don’t know, you know, I don’t know … you know? you know, I don’t know (I don’t know) you know, “I don’t know” that’s the interview…
Frank was not impressed.
"I was all jammed in a corner looking for a lyric"
Frank has no filter. Or he really like his Ativan.
almost everything the interviewer said had a snide little jab and was meant to put a legendary artist on the spot, I'd much rather have listened to what Black Francis wanted to talk about in the moment instead of on speaking points mostly about the daily grind of putting something like a Pixies show on.
OMG he is digging a hole in his forehead
for real
Definitely would’ve loved something more interesting, minus the fluff. Questions about Velouria story, or questions about why he likes guitar models from the 50’s, questions about how dynamics may have changed among the members of the band over the years… geez, anything more than ‘Do you still enjoy the songs every night?’… 🤷🏻♂️
He should have just asked him, “What do you want to talk about today?”
That’s not typically how interviews work lol
He looks like like RAY!
Boy, this interview didn't work out well. Black Francis is a very interesting man, though.
1min 08 seconds before eye contact ...
well, i mean ,you know , i mean its um, i mean i don't, maybe, maybe its false modesty or something or maybe its just kind of like i dont know, dully noting certain aspects of what it is thats going on that maybe.. i dont know, i feel like.. YOu know cuz whatever you know, people always getting you know, all kinds of ego stroke and people kind of like pontificating about their you know, their sort of amazing view they have there is the artist and thats all valid but its just like yeah but what about the part where i dont know, you just, you know, you got like a, you have like a
So we're not going to discuss Kim?
Black Francis looks like he’s gonna drive down to Florida and convince Jo Bennett to give him her job
Debaser in Stockholm still exists!
I'm going!!
You get the feeling these days that Charles is figuratively being propelled down a freeway in a comfy leather armchair - flipping through the channels of his back catalogue. There is a certain sense of resignation and world weary apathy when it comes to the BIZ ... I'm amazed he still bothers, but then - there are always bills that need paying.
He was always surly
Charles' interview demeanour is hilarious.
mmm…oil and water here
A little frustrating listening to the interviewer constantly interrupt Charles' trying to talk about what he was asked to talk about.
I never had a day job and I paint
He reminds me more of louis black than frank black here.
Holy crap!! That’s who I was thinking he looked like!!!
The man has literally rubbed the eyebrows right off his forehead
The coffee he mentions mustve been decaf cuz he's about to nod off into a rip van winkle nap
Love the Pixies, don’t mind Tom Powers. But my god that was a fraught pairing.
Hello dear friend how are you
This guy isn't really LISTENING to Frank. Laughing to cover it up.
I’ve got to get an ego stroke
Looking old now!
Is there a White Francis?
I am a re-baser
Pick a better interviewer that this guy next time
He looks miserable!
i wish the interviewer tried to act manly
and then of course in his mind it's Frank's problem that the interview went poorly. What is wrong with the world
Were old men
'Were old men' - you didn't finish the question.
Gouge away on your forehead
Who is this cantankerous old man and where is Black Francis from 1988 now
Frank´s Bored.
Young dude. Big fan. Bad interviewer. 👎
Pixies were a great band but not anymore ! Pixies fans are deluded.
And you are wrong. Oh well...
Sorry to hear you don’t like their new stuff. I love em as much as ever. Listen to Paz on All I think about now or Charles Silver Snail. Amazing!
Give em another listen
I like their newer stuff
So what? Pretty much all the bands I like made bad music at the end of their careers
Not the best interviewer... But not the worst
He’s still as intolerable as he was in the 90’s
