- Remarks by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd J. Austin, Washington, DC, USA, 29 January 2024.
Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is in the United States this week to discuss maintaining strong support for Ukraine and preparations for NATO’s 75th anniversary Summit in Washington DC.
Austin III. In public remarks ahead of a bilateral meeting, Mr Stoltenberg underlined that Allied support is helping Ukraine defend itself against Russia’s brutal aggression, and that aid to Ukraine is not charity but an investment in our own security. He therefore welcomed both Secretary Austin and President Biden’s leadership in ensuring that US support continues.
Looking forward to the Washington Summit later this year, the Secretary General noted that Allies are set to take further steps to strengthen NATO, including with more defence spending, where he underlined that European Allies and Canada are stepping up and have invested 450 billion extra US dollars for defence.

I am happy for the part that affects me, as a citizen who belongs to a Democratic Country and that protects our rights through our integration into the EEC and NATO, which guarantee our Sovereignty, freedom and comfort.
The US Secretary of Defense speaks with authority and forcefulness.
And the Secretary General of NATO does so with cordiality and responsibility. This gives me the satisfaction and peace of mind that our leaders will act with caution but without taking a step back.
That justice will prevail over any foreign aggression, from Countries with Tyrants and Totalitarian Governments, which make force and injustice their way of acting.

NATO and all its members, including USA, is essential to the world's peace, stability and prosperity by providing the strongest and united defence alliance. US must never think that they should or could quit NATO and concentrate solely on its internal affairs - it would be a huge mistake and only lead to lessening of America's geo-political influence on the world's stage.
