  • In 3 videos I show how to remove and install valves and valve springs three different ways on scooter or motorcycle or other small engine cylinder heads. This third video shows removal and installation using hardly any tools. A socket, magnet, and a hammer are all I used, and the magnet is optional.

I must have watched every valve spring removal video on youtube, and can say without doubt, yours is the best one by far. Clear video and sound, and concise instruction and tips. Just great stuff, thanks for this. Stay metal mate!

Sorry, I watched and commented on the other video first, which was mostly this technique. I have also made a spring compressor using an old, cracked deep 17mm socket that I cut out the sides with a small cutting wheel, leaving openings to drop in the keepers.

You're a pure genius man simple very simple method but pure genius. One would not even begin to think this would work. I struggle with mine 2 days until I saw this video, then I have them installed in 2 minutes. Wow I feel very defeated and now feel as if I should have figured this out myself. Thanks man this video helped out extremely, now my sons happy and riding again.

You rock! I installed a BBK for a friend and the valve seats looked funny. I still installed it, and I broke down first test ride. I looked at the valve retainers and realized why the valve seats looked funny. The retainers were crooked and not properly seated. Thanks to this video, the scoots back up and running without waiting for any new parts. Keep up the good work!

I had no idea after I just finished my very first time breaking down a Harley EVO motor - how to remove the valves. YOU solved that mystery for me in a concise simple manner! I can't thank you enough. Now I'll just need to figure out the best way to clean them.

Thank you 49 cc scoot, for the wonderful teaching.
I am going to try this out on my KTM 390 Duke. Hopefully my thumbs would be strong enough. But your video just have opened my eyes. My valves are really overtight and none of the shims giving desired clearance, I was kinda lost.
Now I see the possibility of non seated retainers.
Thank you once again, I will take it apart and see.

If you can't reinstall the keepers with your thumbs, a proper sized socket with rubber fuel line inserted inside the socket works great. I had to reinstall keepers with the motor installed and the valve stem was deeper in the cylinder requiring more spring compression and too much thumb effort to do the install.

I found a 2012 taotao engine with back wheel in the woods and decided I was going to make it run.
It had no carburetor, electrical or anything other than the main engine and back wheel attached. I have been taking it apart and cleaning, cataloging and keeping pictures of how it looked before. I truly enjoy cleaning and the disassembly and your videos are a GREAT source of information.
The only thing is, other than a carburetor I really don't know what to do to make it run, and I don't know if it will run but I'm gonna keep plugging away and take it a step at a time.

first you have to put something rubbery as a cushion under the valves to avoid damage and for ease of removal and installation. and not all valve springs can be pushed by hands. stiff ones you have to use tge same socket but you put a piece of rubber and tgen push

Compressed air can be used to hold the valves in place. Valves won't come out though.

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  Před 4 lety

You may have valve stem seal issue or piston ring/cylinder issue. Most people use a wire wheel to clean valves. Not a bad idea to lap them after cleaning.

Service manuals sometimes have hose routing diagrams. You can also watch my TaoTao PDI vids and pick out where things go. Post pics on the forum and ask if you still can't figure it out.

If you can install them without a tool you should be able to remove them. I think I'll just compress them with my thumb and let my little brother fish those keepers with a magnet.
