  • Unfairly~ movie Aprill Fools from 1969 was generally panned ~ torn to shreds more like it the intent of some obviously not desirous that we grace the movie with our presence ~well it didnt work we still like the movie Of its time and closing a bountiful colourful decade peopled by Beatles Beach Boys many more . I caught up with the Jack Lemmon comedy almost first time round. the trigger setting off my response was April Fools theme theme by Burt Bacharach~ almost fifty years on the song wistful and reflective by turns evinces Bacharachs unerring gift for melody but as always with Bacharach of a lyrical sort. so attractive Charles Boyer and Myrna Loy were among the stars ~ so was Peter Lawford in another time and place played a role ~in Sinatras and Marilyn Monroes story. Indeed the last person to speak to the screen goddess Theres an excellent documenary of the events with Sinatras classic version Mood Indigo Ill Wind backgrounding the footage I remember reading newspaper on August holiday weekend 1962 impact akin to John F Kennedys death a year plus later Still in his early 20s Marvin Hamlisch and already a veteran of some excellent stuff late composers identifiable gift for film music. Katy Perry's Chained to the Rhythm owes something to Hamlish Way we Were His reputation had already been established in Swimmer Bananas and one of Woodys Allens cherishable comedies Take the money and Run and if you have a mind to go back further switching Bacharachs name with Marvin Hamlisch the delightful Whats New Pussycat and underrated Casino Rloyale. by the way I think ~ yes indeed if sententiously put ~methinks the world of James Bond needs a change of scenery ~ and a holiday~ It had a great 40 year run but all things come to an end and the latterday James Bond incumbent settled into a 1950s Brit movie hard man managing that without hint of humour staunching any forlorn hope of a return to the glory days of Sean Connery when the Bond Francise mixed in equal parts good one liners buttressed by terrific action
I thought there was something wrong with moi such my enthusiasm for everythng Casino Royale ~ not that one the Woody Allen 1967 version headed up with Bacharachs quintessential 1960s score. Remember the mantra not by the music of Arnold Schoenberg alone does man survive. The mantra its getting older by the day ~ Try Schoenberg's opera Moses Und Aaron a veritable riot of great music. still sounds cogent and if some can't make it?
