Luffy would punch Sauron through his eye and destroy the whole tower so Frodo and Sam could destroy the mystery ring. Then after partying for 3 days and 3 nights with the Fellowship he'd invite Sam and Frodo to join the crew if only for the fact that they have huge feet and not for the destruction of the ring of power. And as one to never pass up a good time, would attempt to convince Nami to guide them to the Undying Lands

One reason I'd put Luffy in the Untouchable Tier is that I actually believe he could inspire and bring all sorts of people together to sail under his flag. Many protagonists in fantasy end up being a beacon of hope for others but it often feels forced, whereas with Luffy I actually buy that people would follow him.
Another reason is that he's proactive. He changes his world and drives the narrative a lot with his choices and goals.

Yeah, and also one of Merphy's main reasons for putting Sam up so high was his friendships/loyalty which is a character-defining aspect of Luffy.

Caribou is not even an antagonist anymore. He is a hero who saved Gaburu’s grandma. It was not even once but twice. Once when he defeated scotch and then again when he surrendered to X Drake if granny was let free. His whole cover story is a redemption arc which I don’t think Merphy realized or remembers because the punk hazard arc was a while ago for her. Also now that she has caught up with wano she might have a better understanding of caribou’s cover story and scotch if she did a re-read.

@@Zalied it was one sentence of him saying he has to let someone know about Pluton. He could be talking about Dragon for all we know. Caribou could be a pirate turned revolutionary based on his cover story. This guy literally could have joined the cause just because he likes grandma which is stupid and light hearted enough to work for one piece. It’s not a big stretch. Everyone is jumping to conclusions when it’s obvious he is not even an antagonist but comedic relief like Duval or Hachi. Antagonist is a strong word for a guy like Caribou. Everyone is plotting for their goals. 3D2Y was an example of Luffy plotting for his ambitions. Is Luffy a villain now? Oda has proven to his readers time and time again that you should think outside the box because Oda is the king of misdirection.

Yes, people are constantly telling her how witty she is, but I think *who* is telling her is the important part here. It’s always either dark eyes who aren’t educated at all, lighteyes with little education since men don’t get much (if any), or people who have a crush on her (who also fall into either of the first two categories 😂). A lot of more educated characters don’t really find her that funny. Jasnah calls her out on her “witty” remarks being kinda cheap, and points out that she wouldn’t hold up next to other high class women she’s known because they typically think through their remarks so that they’re more subtle and hit harder.

I disagree the most with putting Sam so high and Frodo so low. If you're talking purely about the movies, I agree, but the books are pretty different. Sam in the books is utterly loyal (that much is true) but he's also bullheaded and I find some of his folksy attitude a bit grating. Frodo is an interesting main character not just because of the book he's in but by comparison to Bilbo. The Hobbit gives a view of the world through Bilbo that is generally fun and dramatic but generally safe. Frodo, on the other hand, faces terrors beyond what Bilbo ever considered. From the moment Frodo is stabbed at Weathertop we as readers realize this isn't the kind of story Bilbo experienced, and that stays with us (and Frodo) for the rest of the book. Daily, Frodo lives with the temptation of the ring and the knowledge that others want to kill him and take it. Bilbo is initially reluctant to join the dwarves but eventually does because of his adventurous side. Frodo doesn't want to leave the Shire but does because it's the right thing to do. I think there are many protagonists who are reluctant but few decide to fight for purely moral reasons. Furthermore, Frodo goes the entire book without killing a single creature. He's philosophical, compassionate, and strong in such understated ways that makes me think most people don't recall reading the Return of the King. He seeks to redeem not only himself, but the lowliest of the low. Why? Because he knows he isn't any better than them. To have a protagonist so closely embody mercy (see Gollum and Grima as examples) is not something I've seen in much fantasy at all. All the hobbits have great arcs but Frodo's goes horribly underappreciated because of the movies and it really annoys me. If it were my list, I'd definitely have Frodo in "Untouchable."

I won't work too hard to change your mind on Shallan; she's not my favorite either.
However, the people who respond to how clever she is are those who are 1)her social inferiors, 2)her stressed out brothers who want to encourage her, and 3) people who wanted in her pants (or a relationship if you're less cynical about it).
One person who is notably less impressed is Jasnah. So I think the cringe humor as a coping mechanism seems like a valid angle.

I just finished the Republic of thieves today. I read this series because you recommended it. I wasn't really into fantasy before this series, but I'm going to proceed with reading some Discworld and first law. I love the gentleman bastards world and its characters. I love Jean a lot too. That's my only criticism of the 3rd book. Not enough Jean. I think that's why the second book has such a strong place in my heart. The whole series is so good so far. My only criticism of the series is the "being someone else's puppet" trope. It was interesting and done different enough each time, but I'm definitely looking to see the next entries step away from that. With that being said, I do love how each book is so different from the other. I will have to say 2 was probably my favorite, though it took me the longest to get through.

Like a lot of characters in malazan we start seeing him basically at the end of his whole story. But unlike a lot of them, he does still just pop on the page and by the end of book 3 you can't help but love him

I'd love to see her do a tier list of villains (/antagonists?) from fantasy. Doffy etc from OP (would maybe have to pick just 4-5 from there, lol, there are soooooo many good ones). If we include antagonists, Hisoka for sure. Padan Fain, Lanfear and/or some of the other forsaken? Lord Ruler in Mistborn. Can just keep going, wouldn't need to be the same list of sources as this, but its not a bad starting point.

I've only made it to the third book of the stormlight archive, so m opinion might change, but currently I like Schallan and Kaladin, but I have some sort of issues with each. With Schallan I enjoy her when she actually shows some wits, but sometimes she wouldn't do so for many, many pages, making me forget that she actually can be witty. It feels like her talk and the rest of her character are kinda disconnected. WIth kaladin... haaa.. I was just so damn frustrated with him at times, when he would get so lost in his thoughts about revenge and in his stigmas about the lighteyes. Like it's understandable to a point, but I felt like it was just this tad bit too much which really frustrated me.
The character I've liked the most throught the books (among the protagonists) is Adolin. He's presented as someone with flaws but also qualities, you don't feel like the author is trying to make you like him, sometimes he's a little dumb and I enjoy that, and all the while he tries to do what seems right and he thinks is good for those around him, not himself.
