- Students at Houston University in the state of Texas voted on Monday for a resolution that urges their institution to divest from companies that could contribute to Israel's war in Gaza. It follows almost two weeks of pro-Palestine protests that have swept through higher education institutions from coast to coast in the United States.

Is this just like a mock student vote thing? Like they’re not share holders or have decision making powers on what the university invests its endowment in.
@@peegee2024 no seriously do they have voting influence on the endowment, or is this just a symbolic vote? Like explain to me how a room of 30 young people will affect investment decisions?
@rossbaker9721 The vote authorises the student body to pressure the university to divest. It is more than symbolic but not decisive in itself. Sorry if I misunderstood and sounded rude.
@@peegee2024 like I’m pro bds 100% I just watched something from Al Jazeera saying that yes colleges can directly divest from publicly owned shares in say Lockheed, but have majority shares invested in mutual funds that are more opaque and can still have holdings in these companies and others that further and aid apartheid. Like I’m probably one of the most pro palestinian people you’ll meet. I just questioned the capacity for true effectiveness of these students voting as an influence on endowment decisions when it’s clear Columbia is a morally bankrupt institution that would set riot police on its own students peacefully protesting war crimes.
@rossbaker9721 Good to know where you stand. As I said before, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I am South African, btw. From our own experience, there were no quick wins and the incremental steps were important. Even small or limited BDS decisions would have the effect of creating impetus for its application elsewhere. The bigger concern is, as you have mentioned, the violence being meted out to students.
How can we be sure that they wont lie?

You can drop from Uni and not pay tuition no? That way your money won’t invest where you don’t want to . And to the “ other collage problems” girl - you need to learn the meaning of word invest - you don’t give money you invest to make profit and that money can give you laboratory equipment.
