this is what concerns me about the use of the term "consent" in regards to producing commodities ie voice recordings etc. its really not appropriate. no ethical consumption under capitalism etc. and its weird that a voice actor believes they have ownership of intellectual property enough to consent to its production or use, especially when its owned by a corporation. its just way off, politicised way too much, and individuals are getting harmed while corporations get special protection. a lot of these anti-ai people knowingly conflate the term because they know no one can criticise the consent argument without looking like a monster. its really messed up

i think i get what they was trying to do (like AI being used to sexualize people who have not sexualized themselves or consented to it, it has been done before and its deeply upsetting ) but this wasn't the case for the video 😭😭 it was silly and goofy and hes new, you can't expect everyone new and wanting to get into the industry to all know the ins and outs 😭😭😭
a lot of people focus on the consent when its a sexual situation, like pokimane being deepfaked and having her voice be sexualized when shes clearly uncomfortable with it, but i've never seen someone say "oh you dont care about consent" but rather just that it's putting artists out of jobs and take traction from real artists
idk thats my opinion on it 🤷🏽

That said, this kid is not the villain. He’s just a young creative trying to make something fun. It's probably cause voice acting isn't as demanding as most other art roles. Unless it's a really big production a lot of lines can be ready the same day and might not even need re-recording. The actual editing of the audio files isn't on the voice actors side and if it's a no budget production they wanted to volunteer for there's usually not a whole lot of lines so they can easily squeeze it into their schedule.
Thats not saying voice acting isn't a talent or difficult. If your doing voices that are extremly harsh on the vocals it's definitely not easy, plus the practice and process of curating a type of voice is work in itself, but a majority of projects don't need 100% new character voices so it's a lot faster of a process.
With a good sound editor you can even turn voice lines recorded over a phone call into movie quality lines. (They did that in the teen titans go movie with Stan Lee)

Of course someone using a computer to make your voice say things you didn't agree to feels violating and disturbing. While I'm personally against Ai art and voices, and I understand that many voice actors have said that they are uncomfortable with people using their voices without their consent to say some pretty messed up things(I would be the same), Grey Delisle handled the situation terribly and her actions were potentially dangerous, she actively encouraged people to harass and threatened someone who was just trying to make a fun project but just made a honest mistake, even threatening to blacklist them from the industry, its a complete overreaction that's potentially destroyed her reputation for many people and studios, making herself look like a bully and its absolutely disgusting
I really did looked up to her, she use to be one of my favourite voice actors and she was one of the first people to make me fall in love with voice acting, but after this and her comparing Ai voices to SA, she's lost all respect from me and many others

I watched the video super early on, as I spent 90% of my time lurking r/scoobydoo sniffing out content to feed my small brain, and I had no idea a video like this would blow up so much. I think ai is a pretty touchy subject, but for a 23 year old college student making an animation video, there weren't too many options. Anyway, it's definitely not enough to out someone on -twitter- X just for using your voice in a small animation video, especially if it was non-profit. I don't know. The whole thing is pretty zoinks ruh roh if you ask me.

It would be better and more productive to EXPLAIN why ai is wrong to this young man, rather than outright liken his actions to sa ?? He would've most likely understood and changed his behavior, and none of this drama would've ever happened

This is a really good example of how both good and bad people can be against immoral things, and how good people can do bad things without being a bad person. For example, Grey is clearly someone who seeks to defend VAs from AI destroying their job market, being used to unfairly represent them, etc, but she isn’t a good person about it. She is so absorbed in her belief that she gave no mind to context, intention, or even truth. She lied about the situation multiple times and defamed him by intentionally misrepresenting him to save her own skin, and despite her lack of knowledge on the situation she threatens to permanently ruin this guy’s career, possibly his life. She fights for a good cause in a despicable way, and that doesn’t necessarily make her good.

So, a person with no formal art experience decided to make a short film. This was a guy working alone on Blender, trying to express his creativity. A solo project from a person with no formal training. He managed to get some voice actors to help him and learned how to voice Scooby himself. Then he hit a wall, with no money to hire anyone and no contacts to help him. He felt it was extremely disrespectful to ask an artist to give him their work for free, so he was at an impasse and didn't know what to do. So he used AI as a last resort.
As a last resort, just to get his work out there.
I can't see where these famous VA actors get off attacking such a small creator. He didn't "steal their voice" he just made a different impersonation of a cartoon character. He wasn't pretending to have hired them, he admitted that due to budget issues he had to rely on AI to get the project off the ground. He was completely transparent about what he was doing. And once he was given other options, he took them. Could you imagine Scott Cawthon getting upset at this creator for using AI to voice his characters? This whole thing just baffles me. It always seems to be this Convention set that have inflated egos and thin-skins and think it's perfectly fine to punch down because they aren't getting theirs from a 23 year old animator who's just starting out.
All art is precarious, but it does not give anyone the right to crush out a new creative talent because they feel slighted. If anyone owns these voices it's Hannah Barbara and I don't see them weighing in on this anytime soon. The actor doesn't own that character's voice, anymore than Robert Downey Jr owns Iron Man. Yes, I'm sure it must seem very weird to hear your voice being used in that way, but I'm sure Mr Downey Jr had to deal with seeing his likeness being used by fans in all sorts of ways. You become famous, that's what happens. It's part of the territory.
And in the modern day, some of those impersonations will be people and some will be AI. So long as it's used in a Fair Use creative way, I don't see the problem. It's when it's used by multi-billion businesses trying to make people homeless for the bottom line, or when artist's work is being scraped online so money can be made off their talent without their consent that these things are wrong and should be legislated against.
Fans should never be attacked for being inspired by what they love. I guess that's where the line is for me.
Sorry for the novel length post, this all just got me fired up.

@@Excelsior1937 Hannah Barbara owns Scooby Doo. They pay people to write the story boards, they pay people to animate the cartoons and they pay actors to voice the characters.
Voice actors are just that - actors. They do not become Daphne, they do not sudden own any of the IP. They just voice the character as per their contract. Next time someone else might be contracted to voice Daphne. That's the way it works.
Sure, the writers, animators and voice actors should get a reasonable cut of the revenue everytime that cartoon is sold to a network or streaming service for reruns. But none of them own Scooby Doo, or any part of it.
You don't see any of the actors of the live action movies trying to claim any ownership of the characters, so why do voice actors suddenly get a pass when they act like they now own the rights to a character's voice? It's massively egotistical and shows a level of entitlement that is just staggering.

    • @raven_moonshine39
      @raven_moonshine39 Před 8 měsíci +6

@@frostrider3704 You're getting into slippery slope territory now. There's a difference between a character IP and an actor's voice/face. Grey Delisle wasn't upset that he made a Scooby Doo short using AI voices, she was upset because she mistakenly believed he'd used her voice in particular for Daphne. Her voice is still her voice no matter what character she's voicing and she should still have a right to field what projects it's being used for. (To be clear, she was in the wrong in this particular case, but that was because 1. it wasn't her voice, and 2. how she handled the whole situation. If he HAD used her voice, this would have been a very different conversation.)
Let's change the medium from cartoon to live action, say, Linda Cardellini as Velma. Hanna Barbera owns the image of Velma. They own the character design--costume, hair, color palette, etc--but they don't own Linda Cardellini's face. There's a reason why none of the cartoons look like her specifically, because they own the character design of Velma, but not Linda Cardellini's likeness. Therefore, if someone made an AI Scooby Doo movie specifically using Linda Cardellini's face and body for Velma without permission, she'd still have grounds to get it taken down because they used her likeness without permission. It's not that it's Velma, it's that it's specifically Linda Cardellini as Velma. It's still her face.
The reason why what you're saying is a slippery slope is because the instant you start saying Linda Cardellini has no right to dictate how her likeness as Velma gets to be used then it opens up people to be allowed to make NSFW, possibly even NSFL, images/films/whatever using her likeness as Velma. She did not consent to being used in that kind of material, but by your logic, it's out of her hands because she doesn't have a right to her own likeness purely because she's wearing the Velma costume. That's getting dangerously close to revenge porn territory, which is illegal for a good reason. Just like QTCinderella and Pokimane had a right to take down the non-consensual deepfakes using their likenesses, Linda Cardellini would have the same right even if she happened to be wearing the Velma costume in them because it's still using her likeness.
Also, saying "You become famous, that's what happens. It's part of the territory." is just gross. I'm sorry, but it is. If an actor is uncomfortable with any kind of fan or public behavior involving them, they have a right to speak up and do what they can to put a stop to it. Does that mean they have a right to shut down every instance of fanart? No. But the instant you start making the argument that they don't have a right to their own likeness or how fans treat them it prevents them from being able to put a stop to the stuff that crosses the line and makes them uncomfortable.

@@raven_moonshine39 Since there appears to be a misunderstanding in my words I will make two clarifications:
      1. Any kind on non-consensual sex, from private to porn is wrong. If a person does not consent to their voice or likeness being in NSFW content, then I am against it.
      2. The "comes with the territory" is in regard to work being used within Fair Use Common Law.
In fact the slippery slope that concerns me is the systematic destruction of Fair Use, using arguments you have put forward here. No one is arguing that deep fake porn should be allowed, but it is used to shut down arguments about Fair Use all the time.
Any kind of contract acting falls under Fair Use. Even if Springtrap had used her voice in their project, it would still have fallen under Fair Use Common Law and no one has the right to demonise or blacklist someone for doing something that is legally allowed within Creative Commons. Even the use of AI in this instance is within the limits of Fair Use.
That other issue I have is with her statement of "I am the voice of Daphne" as if she owns that voice. She doesn't. There is this increasing forced grey area that certain voice actors are trying to bring in that stops anyone using their work for Fair Use in any way. She owns her own voice, she does not own the voice of a cartoon charcter she was contracted to voice. There is a clear distinction there and one that is being constantly eroded on the alter of parasocial celebrity.
Artists need to stop AI stealing their work, yes. But artists also need to fight for the right of Fair Use and stop celebrities eroding legal creative freedoms for their own gain or ego.

this falls very dangerously in the sphere of like, people who want to prevent fanfiction from being written. It's free, it's produced to be consumed for free, it's a remixed and newly created thing, but using things owned by other people. while I disagree with people selling AI created things where the core elements are stolen (such as the voice acting used to make these AI voices) - this project was done out of love, to be shared for FREE. It lies so closely to the witch hunt that fan creators underwent by authors like Anne Rice. We do need laws to protect creators' rights when it comes to AI, but we also need those laws to support fandom creators.

I don’t really know what people were expecting Eagan to do seeing as this was, like you stated, his first ever animated short film, made as a meme. What is the difference between this and the dozens of AI spongebob singing stupid songs? I’ve only ever seen animators with a decent following be able to collaborate with indie VAs, I doubt Eagan could have gathered talent like that without money nor fame. The one thing I absolutely hate about the online art community is that everyone is so quick to jump on their high horse and attack peers viciously, without even considering the fact that it can one day be them. My take is this: if you are purely operating as a small indie with zero budget and you are doing it for funzies there is zero harm in that. The artist is very talented and clearly demonstrates a huge amount of skill and the usage of AI is perfectly permissible. if it's a large corporation that has the resources to hire people and cutting corners and therefore killing jobs, I totally get the pushback. that being said I don't think that the backlash was at any way warranted and the people who created the backlash should be punished for trying to stamp out the career of an artist.
