I love that it’s using those 70’s chord progressions. You can tell the song is from a while ago. So glad he released it!
This was co-written with 3 other writers, as I understand. It would be interesting to know how much and what aspects everyone contributed to it.
@@3rdRockRiderThe producer of the hassles took credit as a co writer of one of Billy Joel’s tunes because he changed one or two words. These modern producers are doing the same thing, taking advantage of BJ great talent. My opinion of course.

Historically Joel has never been much of a co-writer. The Industry model has changed due to streaming meaning producers can take a small writing credit at the discretion of the artist but I doubt they contributed much to the writing of the song. Pretty sure Billy would have brought this in as a finished article.

I studiously avoided it because songwriting had become painful,” he recalled. “I have this high bar. I said to myself, ‘If I don’t reach that bar, I beat myself up and I punched myself and I hate myself.’ So, I stopped doing it because I got tired of feeling like that.”
When Joel heard what Wexler was working on, it resonated with him. “The melody, the chords, the chord progression, even the time signature was something that struck me immediately, and that’s how I relate to music,” he explained. “This particular lyric in this song, I’ve had these thoughts, I could have written these lyrics verbatim. I’ve chewed on these words and I’ve thought of these words, and I’ve said these words before. It was all kind of falling into place - and who am I to fight that?”
This is unbelievable! Billy Joel is my favorite artist since I was about 13, currently 51. You Piano Man Steve, absolutely killed it!!

I think it’s fair to say that it’s not Billy Joel, but this is the best “cover” I have seen/heard of this song. And, I hate to admit this as a piano player/singer and superfan of Billy, 150 times better than I could do. There are tons of videos on CZcams of people attempting “covers” of songs, this is one of the rare ones that is absolutely excellent. Great job.

During the the last week or so, Billy has released an 8 or 4 bar snippet, with just piano introduction, and no vocal. What's going on with that? Maybe an LP version will be different?
