  • Builders Cody Slocum, Lori Blackwell and Alfredo Rico square off in part one of “Build Box: Builder’s Dream” where they are challenged to build their dream AR-type rifle. Competitor guns are judged on overall appearance, individuality, whether it meets the mission, and shootability. Judges are Gun Talk’s Kevin “KJ” Jarnagin and Chris Cerino, along with Jerrod Grove of Wheeler Tools. Build Box is hosted by Gun Talk’s Ryan Gresham.
Build Box is the ultimate competitive gun-building show. Each week, contestants will be challenged to compete with each other, the clock, and themselves, while winning over the judges in a pressure-packed environment. From subsonic adaptations and competition conversions to pistol perfection and modern hunting rifles, Build Box is the ultimate test in gun-build mastery.

I've really enjoyed this series for the most part. The downside so far has been the lack of quality finished products. (Spoiler Alert, the second part of this episode already aired on Outdoor Channel) This episode was the epitome of this problem, as the winner's gun became inoperable before the third judge could even shoot it, and the other two guns weren't even complete enough to try and fire. But even previous episodes the winner hasn't been who met the most parameters of the build, whose gun was more accurate, whose gun shot faster, whose gun transitioned better, but rather it has just been who actually finished their gun and whose gun actually worked for the most part. It hasn't been just a couple times, it's been every episode. To me , there's two solutions, either give the contestants more time to finish, or pick better contestants. As it is, the episodes are full of people who don't really seem to know what they're doing, and three judges condescendingly smirking and talking about how the contestants don't really know what they're doing. It could be much better, and we could have a better ending to the episodes if we could find a way to get complete, functional rifles. My guess is, considering the products in the show, the sponsors of the show would like to show viewers how much fun and rewarding it is to build your own gun, but right now you seem to be showing that you probably don't want to build your own gun because it probably won't work.
How about stick to the three hour build time, then transition to a "testing" round for the three contestants, followed by a one hour troubleshooting/correction portion?

To my dismay, this show feels like the contestants are hamming it up for the camera. If these were novice or first time builders, I would expect rookie mistakes. I get te impression they know much more, and they play up the drama.

@@timmooney7528 No hamming it up. The Gun Talk Media crew made us feel at home so we felt relaxed enough to be ourselves.

I agree. Either they got complete novices who barely know what they're doing, or they got folks who are playing up their character. Possibly to promote using a gunsmith, or buying over building.
3 hours is more than enough time.

@@PrayingPanda The problem is I don't think the goal is to promote a gunsmith or a complete gun. The product placement is obvious, with their Brownells aprons, Real Avid tools, Timney triggers, Aero Precision components, Luth-AR furniture. It's clear who the sponsors of the show are, and all of their financial incentive is through people building their own rifle. That's why I don't understand why they don't figure out a way for every show to produce three well-built rifles that work so they can see who truly did a better job.
