Michel Platini - When Passing Becomes Art

  • Many consider Michel Platini to be one of, if not the best best passer of the ball in the entire history of football. I've made this compilation, which mostly covers his time at Juventus, to showcase his incredible passing range and ability to find his teammate in the final third, be it with a lob, a flick or a perfectly-timed through-ball. Enjoy!

@@Silphwave that's certainly a fair opinion. I'd say that I haven't seen anyone better than Maradona & Laudrup (can't separate them) in terms of the creativity in the final third but Platini (and, even more so, someone like Xavi) is better at controlling the tempo of the game with their passing - which are two different skills. Still, Maradona certainly deserves a place at the very top by any metric, the most gifted football player of all-time in my opinion.

Platini regularly made passes from one side of the field to the other, exactly on the foot of the receiving player, the ball had a spin that would prevent it to bounce, making it easy to control. I have never seen any other player do that with such consistency ever since. All this in a league that had the toughest defenders and some of the best players of all time( Zico, Falcao, Maradona). Dieguito was out of this world, but Michel at his top was not far behind. Le Roy is the best assistman.

I personally think he was a better all-round player than Diego Maradona - a midfield creator, genuinely two footed, a regular goalscorer and with penalties, free-kicks and headers. I never saw Diego get many of them. In 1982/83 from midfield for Juventus he scored 30 goals in all competitions and not one Italian striker could match his 18 in the league! If Maradona can be said to have single-handedly won the World Cup in 1986, then the same can be said of Platini in the European Championship of 1984. Remember that? France had no real central striker that year so Platini was required not only to organise the midfield but to get himself into the penalty area, which he did with real class and scored 9 goals.

Charlton could also hit them with both feet, with swerve & venom. Pelé could hit them with either feet. Any range and distance. Beckenbauer & Platini was great at long raking, angular passes. Hit with majestic strokes. Hoddle passess were similar to Platini's. But he hit them both footed. Pirlo & De Bruyne whipped passes across themselves are also great. Diego & Dinho improvisational ball passes were outrageous.

When you gauge a player or athlete, you have to look at the times in which they played. If you watch old black and white film of Pele, much of the time those defenders are no where near him nor do they touch him in anyway. If you look at the way the game is played for a few decades now, compared to when Platini played, you realize FIFA has tightened up the game so the talent could play without fear of injury. People forget, along with cocaine, opposing players couldn't stop Maradona so they hacked him a lot and he suffered accordingly. He held the ball too long too often. Italian defenders in the 80's would just have none of that, you'd get wrecked. So Platini, along with Maradona played in the most brutal time of football, Italian defenders are famous for being murderers back in the 80s. Now...look at Platini's numbers: goals & assists for his career and what he was able to win in the Italian League. Who comes close?
