9 people said they didn't like this song???? How is it possible? This is one of his most beautiful songs, and Dougie is one if the greatest song writers and singers in the world
I'm Fifteen and right now I'm being force fed Lady gaga and Justin Beiber, I am so thankful I am smart enough to listen to my dad who brought me up on The Beatles and Mr. MacLean. I was so lucky to see him when I was about 11 and I was also too young to realize I probably shouldn't have worn a Kiss Shirt at his concert. He is the largest influence on me right now and almost every sense. I'd give anything to have actually grown up with this music.
I feel the same way about real country music(not the pop stuff that's popular now, but the real stuff, like the music by Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash who speak not just to "country" people, but to everyone that has had any trouble in their life).
I opened up for Dougie a few years ago up here in Alaska. After the concert we sat at the bar and picked guitars until around 8 am.. He is a great picker because of the constant time he puts into his playing. He taught me a few of his songs and I showed him a few of my odd tunings as well. Had fun making up songs through the morning til the bartender kicked us out.. Most amazing were the songs that he played that have not been recorded yet.. He is a great family man and his music tells of that.
It strange ... i may be a 17 yer old who loves mainstream hit music but its songs like this and music like Dougies that really reach out to me, absolutly beautiful xxx
I know that it could be seen as an arrogant fantasy that I am somehow attached to Scotland; that this music touches that part of my heart. Yet here I am, never having walked those golden hills in this life. And yet ...
Paulette Dilks, I hear what you are saying here. I have felt the same way ever since I first heard Dougie sing. His music and his manner have that effect on me as well. I am going to see him in Schenectady next month and am SO looking forward to it. His music just touches me so deeply, that I feel I must have roots deeper in Scotland than those that I am aware of. Peace to you.
I agree and have done since I was a child. When I was 7, my cousin married into a scottish family and that just made me want to go there more. I don't know why I've always had such a fascination with that place on earth, maybe it's just the climate, or maybe I have celtic ancestors - who knows? Not me. Any traces of my heritage are lost in 19th century pomerania and silesia, so that seems improbable. Maybe it's because my mother was in Scotland for some time while she was pregnant with me? Nice coincidence but hardly more. Whatever the reason, I can relate to your comment. Four more years and I'll be through uni and will finally be able to go there if all goes well.
@@djpeters5095 I'm going to see Dougie at this same venue next month. It's a very small village hall so very intimate. I saw him there 5 yrs ago. He made me and my friend a coffee in the wee kitchen of the hall as we waited for our lift back to Perth. I went to School with him He was very shy and quiet as a young boy. He is a lovely Man and very genuine. That's my claim to fame 😊🏴
Scary. That video is actually him playing my request. Had no idea it had gone up on CZcams though. Clunie concerts are magic. He has just done another three for 2008. Highlight of the year so far.
I'm now 36 years of age. My father has played Irish and Scotish folk music all my life( he has been my lifes inspiration) and it's only now that i realise that folk music is still current and well. It;s nice to feel Doogies pull at the heart. Thank you .
My favourite song. "I'll lose a son to the German wars, We'll lose the land he was fighting for. Lose our language to greed and gain, All washed away by a Southern rain. Washed until we can't see, what our destiny meant us to be."
And, as I've said elsewhere in the comments of this video, it seems to speak to America very well(Even though it was written about troubles across the water).
I bought a CD at a Garage Sale that had misc. Artists on it and Dougie MacLean Eternity was in the midst of them. My husband and I fell in love with it immediately. When i listen to this song i feel calm, a pang of sadness, but a sigh of peace. Absolutely beautiful!
I'm in the States, and I see Dougie every chance I have, which is fortunately almost annually. I have somewhere heard that Dougieness is next to godliness. I'll go with that. This is one of my favorites of his, so sweet and honest...
... i just loved to dance with oor two baby boys to this....seems many years ago....brings back so many memories, and makes me realise (I knew!) how amazing this track really is......thanks Dougie,..... Tom.
+Michael Tew Good morning! I too, recently fell for Dougie. I stumbled upon him streaming bluegrass on youtube of all places. Now I want to visit Scotland. Love Dougie's song, Caledonia. A must listen. Have a wonderful day
Fiddes aye what state do you live in? I am from Massachusetts and Schenectady is only about a 2 hour drive from here. SO GLAD that you put up this post> I didn't know he was scheduled to tour the U.S. I am trying to find someone from home to go with me, so thanks for the great info!!
It's strange that we don't know him well, that he's not very popular(but then again, good music is rarely popular). The lines "I lose a son to the German wars/We'll lose the land he was fighting for/We lose our language to greed and gain/All washed away by a Southern rain/Washed until we can't see/What our own destiny meant us to be" speak to what's happening in America very well. "I lose a son to the German wars/We'll lose the land he was fighting for" sound very much like the aftermath of World War 2(when we lost much of Eastern Europe to the Soviet Union), while "We lose our language to greed and gain," while not expressed as harshly in America as in Ireland, do have meaning in some of the corrupt slang(where everything somehow has a meaning somehow related to vice[and that's putting it politely]) and the awful power of big businesses. "All washed away by a Southern rain/Washed until we can't see/What our own destiny meant us to be" speaks to the reduced presence(and perceived importance) of religion and many "rights" movements that really advocate death(Euthanasia, Abortion, &c) and how fast religion is waved away as a legitimate reason for change and a relevant social force. The phrase "southern rain" seems appropriate to describe the "washing away" of religion and resistance to vice(Especially since rain in southern America starts suddenly, doesn't last very long, stops suddenly, and leaves the surroundings seemingly clean, while making mud that stays for days and[especially in the east, due to the reduced amount of topsoil{and consequently more red, Iron rich, and deep staining soil}] is very hard to wash out). America seems to have trouble realizing "what [its] own destiny meant it to be," and often steps that different people make toward our "destiny" are in completely opposite directions.
A song can give you a diamond to return to....something in your pocket and remind you which path you want to be on. What a gift...and this one is hard and clean. It’ll carry a soul through dirty streets and keep it clean....thanks!
.... I remeber so many great evenings dancing wi' ma two sons to this.....and they loved it so much......many years ago noo....but always implanted....cheers Dougie......Toamy
One of my two DM favorites and a lovely performance. Thanks so much for posting this. Waiting patiently out here for "Until We Meet Again" or for that matter, anything you wish to post.
@AustinLondonMustFeed he is brilliant, and yes this is real music. But don't worry about wearing a kiss t-shirt to his concert. I think you were trying to hold onto the teenager in you while you were with people were older than you. We all do things like that. Trust me.

You wrote this 12 years ago, I read it now... I hope, you're okay, and anyway stay true and listen good music.

Dougie is one of the nicest guys I've ever had the pleasure to have met. His music is timeless and voice strikes right to the soul.

Such authentic music. No gimmicks. Speaks from a soul to a soul.
I know that it could be seen as an arrogant fantasy that I am somehow attached to Scotland; that this music touches that part of my heart. Yet here I am, never having walked those golden hills in this life. And yet ...

His words speak to everyone, and the last verse seems to speak very well to Americans(I made another comment elsewhere that elaborates it more).
Maybe your ancestors? My ancestors are Irish and Scottish and I feel those lands and cultures in my soul

So honest and simple yet beautiful. This is all I want from a musician - a voice, a guitar, a genuine soul.
a bard who sings about what matters.
My favourite song. "I'll lose a son to the German wars, We'll lose the land he was fighting for. Lose our language to greed and gain, All washed away by a Southern rain. Washed until we can't see, what our destiny meant us to be."

I may be Australian but in my heart pumps the blood of a Highlander

So pure, so genuine, so lovely, so sweet. Doug's songs and voice move us.

He is coming to the U.S this fall. I will see him in Schenectady, N.Y. 15 Aug.

Been listening to him in the states for 15 years now, thanks to Thistle and Shamrock broadcasts.

I am waiting for a long full version of She Will Find Me. I heard him play it at the Vancouver Folk Festival, and it's so beautiful!

Agreed. A master.
That's a fine song, Thanks Doogie.
How powerful can a song be? Amazing!
