Raw Thoughts: Sim Racing With an Ultrawide Monitor

- A year ago, I bought an Alienware 34" Ultrawide 21:9 Monitor for Black Friday, and I've been using that on my main Sim Racing cockpit for roughly a year now. After this year, I wanted to share my thoughts on my experiences, and also talk about why I'm switching.

One of the things that I'm going to be trying to make a stronger effort into the end of 2019/going into 2020 is to be more comfortable creating unscripted content. So this is a totally raw, unscripted video, so it will likely be a little rougher than other videos, but I'd love your thoughts/input! Thanks guys!
Why do this? Do you feel unscripted content is inherently better than scripted? What about trying to be more natural at reading scripted content? Either way, good luck :)
I enjoyed this unscripted video more than usual scripted. Sounded more natural to me, therefore easier to follow and understand all the salient points you made.
i know it's kinda randomly asking but does anyone know a good place to stream newly released movies online?
@Douglas Genesis Flixportal :)
@Mark Maverick thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D Appreciate it!!
Just ran across this video. I just bought a 34" ultra wide monitor. Was using a 32" TV. Sure do miss that guy....! R.I.P. Will...!
wait he died?!?!
@@GGnooREE Unfortunately yes he passed away. Here’s what I found on Reddit from his family.
Statement from the family:
Friends,
To say our hearts are heavy is the understatement of our lives. It is with the deepest sorrow and heartbreak that we, William Marsh’s family, tell you he tragically and unexpectedly passed away in his sleep in the early morning hours of March 22, 2021.
Will was so open about his life and his struggles, please rest assured that he never gave up. He fought for his life until the end and his death was not by his own hand.
We are still in deep shock as we mourn our unthinkable loss - truly Heaven’s gain. We have no doubt that He is in Heaven with Jesus, as he was so strong in his Christian faith. He is at perfect peace now, though we struggle so hard to find peace of our own.
As we take steps forward, please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Live your lives as beautifully as Will did. We will be creating a Facebook group where you all can share photos, memories, quotes, puns, jokes, anything and everything about our Wonderful Will. It is also where we will provide any further information. For now though, it was all we could do to write this announcement.
There is no right way to end this because it all feels so wrong. Again, please pray for us as we mourn together and cling to the fact that Will is at peace. Love,
Will Marsh’s Family
If I had space I would probably triple screen it up, but I'm still quite content with a 35" Ultrawide and VR. I am impressed you were able to drive and deliver a well-spoken uninterrupted video piece in one take.
I did actually cut out a few seconds because I had a coughing fit (was getting over being sick), but yeah, talking while driving is pretty darn tough...
If you have a rig for just sim, and have a space just for racing i would keep the UW. But if you re like most of us who use the same monitors for general usage, gaming besides racing and productivity you might as well go triple screen
Thanks man. U helped me gain alot of perspective on 21:9 monitor ❤️
I just gave this similar spec monitor a go coming from VR, I’m back to the hp reverb, I can see so much further and see marks on the track much easier which I use for brake/turn in references
Ultrawide does look good! I just moved to a triple screen setup.
Gordon Ramsay "THIS VIDEO IS RAW ! "
I just don't have a space for triples, my valve index is a good compromise, and hopefully the next generation of GPU's will make it even better.
I do get that for content creation vr isn't a practical option.
I’m planning on getting a 35 inch monitor and I’m very excited
Great review mate. Hows the immersion on 49 inch screens? Any ideas?
Thank you.....I was about to go triple screen to play primarily F1. I will have to do some more research.
You can play fine with triple screen for F1. The difference is that if the monitors are not the same, the game will look cropped
Go Ultrawide and don't worry about the wider FoV, just go faster so you're never wheel to wheel racing :)
What fun is that?
just went from Rift S to Reverb a few days ago and it was worth every euro spent. Rift S was cool but Reverb (despite the sweet spot being relativly narrow) is amazing (AC, PC2, RF 2 all look so sharp I would´ve never imagined). For 580 € it was a steal. And I run these games with my GTX 1080 at 90 fps on medium settings. Much less demanding on my graphics card than SS on Rift S with much better result.
I know this is an old thread, and unfortunately the guy that made this video passed away, but I'm similar to you. I have a RTX3070 and use a 25" 1080p monnitor and a Rift S. I love the Rift S (apart from setting it up) and AMS2 looks amazing in VR. I'm stuck between buying a better monitor superwide 34" 1440p 144Hz, or a better VR setup.....
Did you ever get to do a video on the triple screens?
My thoughts are on getting rid of that dam fly on your windscreen. Any way all i will say is, its totally down to each persons needs. I for instance suffer from bad motion sickness. I use to play a lot of FPS shooters until i started getting sick. Triples and VR for me are a no no while racing because of the two side screens bouncing around while driving. An ultrawide setup in my case is fantastic. I use a MSI Optix MPG341CQR Curved Gaming Monitor 144hz and have zero problems. I also use a 27" on the side for apps such as simvibe and my SRD-M3 display and other utilities. As long as we are all happy with what we have.
Ha, I couldn't stop staring at that fly too.
I just got a 5120x1440 on cyber monday and love it
My space barely allows for a 34" ultrawide. Streaming in 21:9 is also possible, even though it's a bit unique. Would like to try triples, but VR is maybe the better way, when future headsets improve in terms of FOV, eye tracking and foviated rendering.
Racing triples with 34‘‘ Screens (predator series, 1440p) and from time to time Vive Pro VR. For proper Sim racing there is no way around triples at the moment IMO. You really need the extra FOV for the reasons you mentioned. As every real Sim supports triple screens (I don‘t care for the rest :-)), I do not see the argument with configuration issues.
Yet the „gold“ standard could be more advanced VR systems in the future.
The 2 major downsides to triples: The cpu/gpu power needed is brutal and it needs tons of space, basically an entire small room!
Would love for you to revisit this topic with a 32:9 monitor :D
Rest in peace
Hello Will i have this monitor, triple screens didn´t worked for me because of many issues with nvidia surround and mostly space in my house office, and the fact that im using more and more VR but you tried Head tracking with it? wouldn´t it solve the problem of checking side mirror and side by side cars? im thinking of trying this just to see.
bro how can you talk in such an intense race...i forgot my monitor and starting watching his race!
if that is ultra wide, i need to check my eyes then…..
Ya fairly sure the triples is better, I still went with a 49" ultrawide. If anything we are lucky we have so many options.
Even with this monitor I still can see some minor steering lag, is this camera related?
I don’t understand the reason of having a wheel on screen if you are using a wheel.
Exactly. It looks STUPID to have the wheel on screen. Nobody in real life sees their steering wheel when driving.
do you need a 144hz monitor or is it enough only using 75hz monitor?
Obviously if you have room for triple screens it's superior to an ultra wide screen, I do not have room tho', would you say that an ultra wide monitor offers an improvement over 16:9 if that's all I can squeeze in?
Nothing beats VR imo.... Sure you need a good graphic card, but even with my 970, I'd prefer VR over triples.
Quite uncomfortable and hot for a long race, plus you can't use button boxes or many wheel buttons. The resolution also has a ways to go.
skol vikings I actually agree, but only partially. Yes it gets hot, but there are solutions for that. For buttons I only really need 4 or 5, which you get accustomed to on your wheel (if you have enough).
A big part of sim-racing is immersion, and nothing beats VR in that aspect.
@@Ramsters I think it's good to mess around with once in a while, but not for competitive racing Hopefully they keep improving it, and it gets to where it needs to be
@@skolvikings5263 I use my button box and wheel buttons just fine in VR. You just need to use it long enough to develop muscle memory. That's with both flight sims and racing sims.
PS - Go Vikings!
You should try 49”
Im confused, why is this a widescreen and we only see half the car? What am i supposed to see? I want a wide screen if it means i can see all of the car inside on my PS4 specifically for gran turismo.
This is because he's using proper FOV for 1:1 perspective, that's usually pretty narrow. And consoles don't support ultrawide monitors.
Who sits 3 feet behind the steering wheel?
Is it better to by the Samsung OLED G9 49” monitor or a 65” Sony Bravia OLED TV?
Is trackir still supported in modern titles?
Yes, even Codemasters support TrackIR in their new games.
Title should be YouTubing with an Ultrawide as that is what you were really comparing this vs triples
You clearly didn't watch the whole thing before making this comment. He went further than that.
altho ive enjoyed my ultrawide LG monitor i wish i had got a 144hz or just 2 more $100 1080p samsungs
The problem with that monitor is that is really small. Try a 43 to 49 monitor. Is what is used for sim racing.
VR. The only way for me.
Yeah. With Windows XP-like resolution.
It would be nice if everyone would just call the 32:9 displays type the double wides. The 21:9 have the ultra wide name. One manufacturer already has DW in the name of the displays.
32:9 is called super ultra wide
Triple ultrawides?
Might go 38 from 34 monitor
I'm toying with idea of ultrawide in center and 16:9 on the wings
Not with Nvidia you won't
@@Threefiddyz oh yeah
@@Threefiddyz I forget about that, good call before I bought the monitors
I have an Asus Pg348q monitor and I love it for gaming and racing but you hit the nail on the head as to its biggest downfall... Lack of true support if you're a content creator. If they could add the same support 16:9 aspects ratio content gets then it'd would improve 10 fold but right now the lack of end screens, streaming being a bit off etc means it's not viable if you're a content creator sadly. KUTGW
I'm racing with Triple Dell 27" 1440p G-Sync Gaming monitors which I managed to source during an Amazon.com sale price. 😎👌
Dell S2716DG 's ???
why not keep the u;trawide and run a couple smaller monitors on the sides
He passed away but he did have a nice setup.
@@alkine3011 damn
Maybe try a real superultrawide monitor like the crg or wait for the odyssey g9. 34” really ain’t shiet as far as providing any immersion.
keep it unscripted ! Its way more natural !
how the hell can you talk(not just talk but this kind of talk) while racing. kuddos to you lol
Really had to stop the video. I am a sim racer - not acontent provider.
I knew you was too smart not to use triples 😁👊👍
Great content! Try to be more concise.
Jeez can you not do your commenting while you driving- because you are not good at doing both.??? And you spoke more (staggertly) about triple screens than the actual screen in front of u.
He's dead m8 rip
thats not an ultrawide, an ultrawide has a 32:9 ratio :p this is at best a superwide
Ultrawide is 21:9. Super Ultrawide is 32:9. Now we just wait for the day where we get a 48:9 Super Duper Ultrawide ;)
Great review mate. Hows the immersion on 49 inch screens? Any ideas?

I use a 49 inch 5120x1440, It's a better experience than my 34 Alienware. I use vr for all titles that support it besides ACC.
