What does “better” mean between Fantom and Montage? Fantom has a huge legacy of Roland subtractive synthesis and Yamaha has AN-X and FM-X. Fantom has clip and TR-REC sequencers, Montage has QY style sequencing. Fantom has more SUBs (outs). Montage has a SuperKnob to control dozens of parameters all through the synth at once. It’s like saying “which is better, a Porsche or a Ferrari?”. It totally depends on what matters to you and most importantly, sonically.
Hi @Winter-zv1dv
And you hit the nail on the head. What do you want to use the keyboard for? Using your Porsche or Ferrari analogy. If you want to look cool you buy a Ferrari, if you want a reliable car you can drive every day you buy a Porsche.
The same with keyboards. In my mind and seeing the various demonstrations of the synths. If you are composing and working in the studio I think the Roland Fantom EX is the better synth, where some of its limitations don’t matter touch and its access to legacy instrument engines would help in the process.
But for stage work I thing the Yamaha Montage has it between the two instruments. Jon
Some important details about the new ACB engine: it’s 8 voice max, can’t be split/layered, and available on part 1 only, in lieu of the V-Piano engine. That would explain why it’s not coming to the V-piano-less O series, if the chip it requires is not on board. Moreover, by using the V-Piano’s chip on the Fantom, I would expect the ACB polyphony to be similarly independent of the ZenCore polyphony. We’ll have to see if that bears out. Edit: I was wrong about the effects not all being like the original at the Tone level. There are Rev/Chorus/Delay at the Tone level, but only active for a single instance of the JD-800 model, and it will be the lowest part number, if multiple instances are used. On any other instances used, the MFXB screen containing the Rev/Cho/Delay is greyed out.
Hi @xp50player
Some really interesting data. The ACB on the Roland System-8 is only 8 note polyphonic. So they have ported the engine but not used the additional horse power to enhance.
And the limitation on the V-Piano is interesting. I guess they think you would only play piano or the Roland Jupiter-8.
Thanks for the other updates. Jon
I updated Fantom 7 with Fantom EX upgrade. Here are the reviews: The ACB Jupiter 8 sounds fantastic, but you'll have to decide whether to use the V-Piano or the ACB, as both are Zone 1 only. So what's the point of having a great Jupiter 8 ACB if I can't use the V-Piano at the same time. I don't understand why they didn't put ACB on Zone 3. The JD800 is an outstanding Model Expansion. I already had the N/Zyme and unfortunately already paid the $199. I wrote to Roland Cloud and they are supposed to refund the difference between the discounted price and the $199. It hasn't been refunded yet, but I'm still waiting. Super Natural Piano 3 is crap like all the others in my opinion. Unfortunately, everything that applies to the real Super Natural Piano has been removed from it. No string resonance, pedal noises, etc. If this is what we want, only V-Piano can do it, limited to Zone 1. The effect thing is good, but there is no major upgrade in the features. Ever since Fantom was released, I've been waiting for the opportunity to create my own arpeggios. This has not been resolved. The sequencer could also be improved. Polyphony is still a problem. We pay for the extras, but the bottom line doesn't change. Phantom polyphony still has limitations. I don't think the arpeggio issue will ever be resolved. None of the preset sounds use arpeggios, only Step LFOs. You cannot save an arpeggio for the sounds, because it will affect the entire Zone-1 or any Zone you want to use it on. So Fantom is improving the sound arsenal, many new things have been added to Fantom, but the workflow spoils everything. If I have to distinguish between Montage M and Fantom, then Montage M is the winner. Montage M does not need bug fixes because it already knows everything we can expect at the moment of release. If there is an update for it, it will only be a practical update, not a fix. AWM2 always provides new sounds, while Fantom has not changed 20-year-old PCM sounds to more modern sounds since then.
Hi @yamahamotifxs
Thanks for the initial detailed assessment of what you have found following the Roland Fantom EX upgrade. I found you comments really interesting on this platform and what you perceive to be the ongoing issue. Jon
AWM2 in the Montage/MODX are not all new PCM, hence the retro patch compatibility with the entire Motif range. Fantom has a fair amount of new PCM, new VA synthesis capabilities, tonewheel modeling, wavetable engine and the algorithmic V-piano engine, none of that recycled from previous Roland workstations.
Hi @xp50player It is the engine concept that allows different instruments to be modelled and therefore makes them compatible. If you write the right software and put it in a computer you can make it do most things and that is what this is a computer. Jon
The discount code I got for EX for having bought Nzyme is $100 off EX (even after emailing them and telling them that $50 is the fair price since i already paid $149) So if I bought EX I would be paying Roland a total of $248 instead of just $199 . Plus when I sell my Fantom the new owner doesn't inherit any of these paid upgrades.
Hi @krslcsn
Thanks for letting the channel know what the discount is about. I guess it would be too much to ask for the people that purchased N/Zyme to get away with just an additional $50 charge. Jon
They set the price, not you. You don't have to agree.
Hi @matthewgaines10
You are absolutely right and you agree or disagree by getting out the credit card or not. Jon
It's called a market... You buy it or you left without it!
Hi @XPJV 👍Jon
I wish they fixed the polyphony issues with the upgrade. I can still deal with the arpeggio issues but the polyphony issue is a major setback for the fantom
Hi @ImOluwatosin
The polyphony issue has been the main issue for many Roland Fantom users. Jon
Derrick Keels did the Montage / Fantom comparison.
Hi @matthewgaines10
I have seen this, but I would like to see a refresh of this 'key off' with a Yamaha Montage M and Roland Fantom EX. Jon
Are you saying that I have to be on update 3.2 before updating to EX?
Hi @Bashanvibe
The guidance doesn't specify whether this requires the latest operating system or you can go from whatever version to the EX upgrade. Without guidance I would upgrade to the latest operating system 3.02 and then apply the EX upgrade. Jon
I upgraded from OS 3.00 without issue.
Hi @defenderstargate1447 Thanks for the information. Jon
Wish I hadn't bought enzyme, this would have been a great deal, but since I did cost me a extra 50 bucks.
Hi @zxkevin57
I am assuming that you got the e-mail from Roland with the discount code. Jon
I have heard of somebody getting a full refund of the n/zyme purchase. There may be a time factor on how recent the purchase was to the release of the EX upgrade’s release.
@@TheMusicTechGuyUK Yes Sir I did get the coupon code 100.00 off,I wish I would have waited on the enzyme upgrade for 149.00 but when you try to support and do the right thing you end up paying,it's just 50 bucks but times are tight!
Hi @xp50player Interesting information. Jon
Hi @zxkevin57 I am afraid it is what it is. And while we can all wings about this on various forums, unless there is a massive swell against, nothing material will happen. But I do link at this from this perspective, at least they have recognised the N/Zyme purchase and given some discount! Jon
I love my Fantom and will definitely upgrade but I do have issues with how complicated it is to upgrade and having to pay since I’m ultimate subscriber.
Hi @gretareinarsson7461 Thanks for your feedback on the Roland Fantom. I agree the payoff upgrade is a kicker and I hope this doesn't set a president. Jon
If they did it as part of the subscription, you’d have to reauthorize the Fantom every month, like you do on the JunoX.
Hi @xp50player
There is a reason that they didn't do it this way. As that would have been simplish. The cynical says money, but also if this board is not connected to the internet very often then this type of mechanism would not work. Jon
Podrían hacer tutoriales en español para los latinos?
Hi @PAXTECUM2010
If I could speak Spanish I would love to. Jon
When n/zyme was first released it was 99 bucks.
Hi @doogey420
One thing you learn very quickly in this business, it's all about the money! Jon
you will get 100 discount
Hi @aalamood Another commenter stated the same meaning the EX Upgrade costs an n/ZYME user $250. Jon
