About FANTOM EX Upgrade
The FANTOM EX Upgrade propels the FANTOM experience to new heights and injects the synth with six expansions including JUPITER-8 and SH-101* Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) Expansions, JD-800, V-Piano German Concert Piano, SuperNATURAL Acoustic Piano 3, and n/zyme Model Expansion. Studio-grade reverb effects are also included, along with numerous tools for practice, stage, and studio.

Thanks for the great informative video that works! My update was build 4.12 that had an extra step after turning on after the system update. It came up with an "AUTO UPDATER working...." screen that after it completed said "Completed. Please Power Off" that required a 2nd turn off and turn on before coming up to be able to check the version.
This is a great upgrade, and for a price that isn't insane. However, your competitors have complete upgrade processes for their synthesizers that basically involve a prompt automatically popping up, "hey, firmware and updates available, do you want to install?", you click YES, and that's it as far as your involvement. It just works. No USB keys, no swapping in and out of different ports, no special keypress boot-up processes, no manual copying of files, and certainly no hour-long seven-step installation process.
The Fantom is an absolute beast, and I will be installing EX into mine, but the fact that a simple firmware/preset upgrade process requires a detailed 15 minute instructional video while your competitors do the same thing with a single mouse click is a complete and utter FAIL on Roland's part.
Well , this is Roland ``pain in the ass`` feature. If it was simple as with everyone else than it would not be Roland. One must put an effort and get angry. No pain, no gain...and it´s not for free 😆😆
Totally agree on this! I'm currently installing this, and it may be the most burdensome install I have done since perhaps the mid 90s. But, it is obvious that you guys knew enough to put up this great guide on how to. Can't wait to play!
Please allow me to take a somewhat contrarian view. Every music equipment and DAW maker is constantly harangued and beaten down by people wanting Linux support. Well, this is what the world looks like when we have keyboards that run the Linux OS. Upgrades are not always "automagic". Upgrades require that we sneakernet files back and forth. Upgrades require multiple boards be updated. And upgrades require post-upgrade "stuff" like Scenes and Wallpapers to be installed. It is what it is.
But the good news is twofold: First, we actually get upgrades for our hardware keyboards. That is a win, because gone are the days when we buy a keyboard and we get zero updates or upgrades. Ever! Second, we get Mr. Diaz showing us how to proceed. Also a win. What an amazing time to be alive!
@@justaskin8523 Wrong. The Yamaha Montage/MODX/Montage M synths are Linux devices, and their firmware upgrade process is a single step that is nowhere near the mess that is involved with the Fantom. Main systems and all subsystems are updated, all live sets (equivalent to a Fantom Scene) and parts (equivalent to single tones on the Fantom) get updated automatically. No user intervention at all.
It can be done...it's just that Roland didn't bother putting the time or effort into the engineering required in order to do it when the Fantom was designed.

Just got the EX upgrade, was absolutely not expecting to be this impressed with it. My Fantom is an entirely different instrument now, well done Roland.

Although I couldn't wait and bought the update at full price, I automatically received an e-mail with a credit note. Thank you Ed . Its a Shame Roland has made it another mountain to climb to actually install the new upgrade. If an old version of Roland Cloud manager is stored on your computer already . You can use the update provider insider the manager if you can actually find it . Looks like despite the Great Video you provided I wont be upgrading until I upgrade to a new computer !

Great Upgrade! Splendid and smart video for the upgrade process. The installation for my fantom 6 was little different as given in the video. There was an auto update screen running after the banks were installed. But everything worked fine. Overall it just took 30min for me to install the upgrade. I have no access to the wallpapers, but that is unimportant for me.

With the amount of investment Roland and their customers have made in the Roland Cloud + Fantom (workstation, workflow, time, expansions, $$$) it makes a great deal of sense for Roland to continue supporting the Fantom platform. I am hopeful that they'll continue to invest in this platform for several more years.
This is just another product (money grab) for the underpowered Fantom.
It has nothing to do with "support".

So, the nzyme discount mail procedure is really frustrating, Stoll got no mail- but I bought it now and the Update itself is fantastic. Also your explanation about the procedure is great.
I work with integrated AV, and it’s no where near as complicated. But I love Roland gear.. so I’ll put up with it.

I remember being really angry that this update came with N/zyme, and that I wasn't originally able to get a discount when I bought N/zyme previously. I felt like I was paying a lot of money for essentially 2 model expansions and some general quality of life changes. If you are in the same boat as I was or just unsure about whether to buy this or not; I can assure you that you wont regret it (especially considering you get a discount if you bought N/zyme previously).
The ACB synth Modelling is drastically better, it makes the Jupiter model expansions they released previously sound like a kids toy. I don't know what black magic Roland was able to do but it sounds amazing.
Another great thing about this new release is that Roland has released the source code for the fantom for free, meaning that when they stop supporting it, the Fantom community can still make changes. Of course the fantom still has it's faults but I am definitely singing a different tune than when this expansion originally came out. There's so much they added this update to go through it all, but it really is great they are still running with it. Keep it up Roland :)

I hope that the EX upgrade or a part of it will be available for the Fantom 0 series. This is a great upgrade.
unlikely to get the model upgrades due to the less powerful processors in the Fantom 0 series. But the Cubase integration and such would be nice to get.
The Fantom 0 series only has 256mb of storage. The EX upgrade with the expansions is over a gig. No way the fantom 0 has the processing power for it, either.

The update procedure for me was slightly different. First the update to board 1 took about a minute, not the 10 minutes the video claims. The board 2 update did take quite a lot longer. Then when rebooting the Fantom after extracting the USB the FANTOM EX logo appeared as shown but then an unshown "Auto Updater" screen appeared and ran for about 10 minutes with a very slow "percentage complete" progress bar before telling me to power off again. This step was not mentioned at all in the video? Ed just went straight to System Info to show the version number. Seems odd that this was omitted give the detail everywhere else.
after updated bord 1 & 2, removing the usb mem stick, turning power off and on, first there was an auto updater running. Took several minutes and then i had to turn power off and on.

Can you have this upgrade for Fantom 08?
Upgrade tip - don't use a huge USB stick. I tried to use a 32GB stick and step 2 of the main upgrade didn't recognize it when I put it in the external device port. Had to copy the same files onto a 2GB stick and that was recognized when I plugged it in. Step 2 proceeded to run without issue. Also, as others have noted - on the first restart after the main upgrade there is an "AUTO UPDATER" window that takes a good 10 minutes to complete before the Fantom fully fires up.
I have used 64GB ( Verbatim ) and it works.
Don't use a USB 1.0 drive. I used a 2GB USB 1.0 drive and it failed like you experienced, but a 2g USB 2.0 drive worked fine. Not sure if that was your problem, but it was for me.

Question: Will the installation of EX format the instrument? Will the samples, instruments, and user scenes be deleted? And, if that's the case, would restoring from my previously made backup after the EX installation erase the EX update?

After powering back up, I got an Auto Updater progress bar that you don't mention here. I automatically thought I did something wrong. Upon completion, it tells me to Power Off once again. After this everything looked good

For my Fantom 6 there is the same. An auto updater startet after the boards update and repower. Took some time
Just to get this straight: We're having 2023 and in a 2020 Top of the range workstation, there is no way to have it all installed at once? Why the thumbdrive and not downlading it from the Roland Cloud or something? Always thought this was a modern computer with sounds and keys, not an analog synth?
Requesting help to complete the upgrade. I did everything as you said. However, when I tried to load the new wallpaper, I could not find the file or USB under utility/wallpaper for new wallpaper. I am confused, and could you help me?

Great video. I wonder if this is the Last update. Possible a “Fantom EX” model to be released. Of clues a higher price. Possible with double the ram for installing more of the expansion sounds. But down the road will be new hardware that will take Roland Zen platform into the next Decade.

I bought and installed the EX update this evening and am overall happy with it. I was wondering, in the future when there is a firmware update released, does that mean there will be a Standard Fantom Release, as well as a Fantom EX Release?
I am a bit underwhelmed with the SMF player though. Is there a way to get it to play Roland GS midi files (or standard general midi files... dont laugh :) ) on the Fantom and have it assign the instruments correctly as a starting point? I doubt it since I have seen nothing saying it supports GM. I was hoping this would be a nice little midi file player, as it was only a part of the paid update. There was not an easy way to just play midi files previously without piecewise importing it to a scene (in 64 measure chunks and piecing it together in the SONG sequencer). I tested the SMF player and does not even seem to transmit the midi messages to update instruments to the old SC-55, but if I import a midi file to a Fantom Scene (64 measures at a time, the old way of importing a midi file) and create a song, the Fantom will transmit the midi program changes that will update the instruments on other GM equipment, so Im not sure why I cant get the new SMF player to that. I spot check the midi transmission menu options stuff and did not see anything that looked to be an issue. Anyone else tinkered with the SMF player yet?

So it´s two different OS, so it should be/must be different updates in the future. Quite something to handle for Roland...
After the update there is no select userfile option on the wallpaperpage!?
After EX upgrade mine freezes when connected to Logic even with a basic midi cable and can not power down from its own power button. I also have step sequencer hiccup while looping on 16 step. As soon as I add a step to any of the drums or any other track.

You have to update Roland Cloud. I had an update software option in the top right corner of the Cloud manager.
On second part of update when moving to other USB port I got no file....Help!!! anyone
Just to help anyone that runs across this, at 5:26 in the video, mine came up with a message indicating insert UBS memory for board 1, basically the same message as it had for board 2. Removing and reinserting the USB stick allowed it to see and start the upgrade. But don't pull your stick out unless you are sure you are seeing this message for board 1!

Good video although is missing to mention the updates that happen after the first start which take another 15-20min, and that require a second restart after that. Checked the results briefly and don't understand the hype with the EX. I definitely am excited to see the new M8 features and price, and will probably go that direction if I can get a good price on my newly updated EX Fantom 8 (FYI I am not a fan Yamaha and don't advertise them, and I purchased over $20K of Roland and Boss Products during the last 5 years, but had a Montage 8 that I've sold during summer, and it was not bad). Regarding the time and complexity of updating your Fantom, I just did the same thing with my Line 6 Helix yesterday (Doh another one of the other people equipment but don't start swearing, I've got a GT1000), and can say that it was free (nothing to pay), substantial update just like the EX, and involved a push of a button, no memory cards, no hassle. Fantom is 3 times more expensive than a Helix and it is a newer design. Fantom has a USB connection as well, too bad that it is just for sound and MIDI and cannot be used for one click software installation. Just to add to my frustration, had issues with the Cloud after I paid for the EX upgrade. The new presentation is not intuitive unless if you used it recently.
I agree. The sounds in my Korg M3 (not pianos) and Korg Krome (including pianos) and Yamaha Motif XF outshine the new Fantom, yet are much older. Fantom looks great, but the sounds are lacklustre in my honest opinion. I think the Fantom is my last real keyboard. Other than requiring a controller keyboard, software is the way to go - Native Instruments and even my UVI piano sound much better, and cost peanuts in comparison.
@@wildbluesea1 I agree with you, but have my reservations regarding controllers and computers. I like to have a robust keyboard that starts fast and always does as expected...It's true, I started with controllers Proteus/EMU time on Win XP and that was a lot of pain. I believe that good options would be stage pianos as RD2000 (although that is still too complex and still expensive), simpler synths like the former FA8 (had one and was inexpensive and nice), or better yet simpler and portable stage pianos such as RD88 of CP73. I would have purchased an RD88 but got a CP73 instead because it is metal casing (Aluminum), 73 instead of 88 keys, and starts within a second...totally happy with that decision.
Something important is missing here. How did the EX upgrade get on to your thumbdrive? I've tried to download the EX upgrade but the Roland Cloud Manager requires Windows10 and I have Windows 7. I haven't found any links to download the EX upgrade without using the Roland Cloud Manager.

I love Roland but everytime I see these update videos It makes me think on why the team behind the Fantom doesn't come up with an easier way to update the firmware, I mean this looks way too complicated...
I was thinking the same thing!!! I own the Fantom been rocking with them since the G6 i brought 2 of them!!! When I brought the flagship finally a few weeks ago I’m still going through the learning curve but it’s to be expected!!! I learn slower than the average person!!!
Yes, I just ran the update and installed all of the expansions and scenes. The user experience is a little too 2005. I do appreciate that it seems like they are doing a dual firmware upgrade (at least I think that’s the reason for moving the flash drive to the other port), but wow that’s a lot of steps. I’d really like to be able to manage everything through an app on the computer.

Surely it’s not beyond the Roland eggheads to use Roland Cloud to sync firmware and content in general via USB - like Arturia and Novation have for years.
The firm would have to actualize to the pc. Now i have a fantom 7 that i can't downgrade the system and v piano don't exist because the actualization isn't complet.

Am trying to midi the fantom 06 to mpc x
Going midi out of the fantom to the midi in of the mpc
I can see the fantom reflects on the mpc when I play
But am unable to sequence with the fantom in the mpc
The plan is to use the mpc as a sequencer
On CZcams there is a few video's on this topic. I know for a Fact Bolo addressed this issue.. check him out! There are a few other's I can't name off hand but they are out there. Good luck!

Everything installed and works fine except Tine Mk1. There is no sound at all. I've tried installing it in multiple locations but nothing. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix?

well, the ex 1.0 is a totally new OS, but it has the fixes from 3.02 included...however, from now on, never use the former OS versions again, even updates, only use updates for the ex in the future...so it´s two different OS from now on. wonder if they still take care of those who haven´t upgraded to ex.

Already owning n/zyme, I was glad to get the steep discount today. Everything went smoothly except installing the new wallpaper. For some reason, the User File won't show up, even after re-confirming the drive's contents. Weird.

Also, if you already have N/Zyme installed, you cannot select all 3 new engines to install at the same time, it will tell you "already installed" so you need to install them 1 by 1. Not a big deal.
One important thing I have not seen in the manuals is to en sure that the USB thumb drive you use is USB 2.0 or higher, not 1.0 -- I have tried a 1.0 drive and it fails at the part where you need to insert it into the ext memory port. The drive is not recognized and the part 2 installation never happens. Thankfully, just repeating the process with a proper USB 2.0 drive works and the Fantom is not stuck.
