- Naturally Spalted Plum with a very large crack nearly all the way through the width of the bowl. Some very deteriorated wood, some punkiness, lots of bug holes under the ever-flying bark! This gave me a very hard time.

I am 80 years old and have been very active most of my life. I fell hit my head and got a brain bleed. I spend almost a month in the hospital. Started watching wood turning. I watched all the guys with glueing things together and forming with epoxy but no interest. I just love watching your videos. It is like you are talking to me as a friend and you let the piece dictate the end product. Thank you for providing a very interesting product.
I'm hoping you're feeling better and are able to get back to an active and fun lifestyle.
We are friends, Douglas and as your friend, I'm glad to know you are feeling a little better. That must have been scary. At 75, I can just imagine what an impact that had on you. Take good care and thank your for your comment! 😄
What a well thought out compliment. I can’t help but feel the same way with regards to how his videos are. Good luck with your health. God bless.
That tenon was scary looking! Definitely this piece of wood was meant to be in the hands of a skilled craftsmen 🤠
Get well soon, Douglas, and I hope you stay that way! 😊😊
When you laughed and said 'who else would do this?' The answer is very few. But that's why I enjoy your channel so much, you do stuff other people don't and it's always a pleasure to watch you create beautiful objects.
Thanks so much, Joolz! 😄
I think we need to give you a new name. "Phil the determined" will be your new name in my books. Never give up. We love all you do.
Haha, I'l take it, Chris, thanks! 😄
It amazes me, Wood Whisperer, how well you read wood. You whispered and it listened to you!
Thanks Phil! Awesome job!
Thank you so much, Kelly! 😄
"Fearless Phil" strikes again .....I was on the edge of may chair watching you turn this......brave but worth it ...nice work Phil I am in awe of your talent......thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much, Andrew! 😄
Phil. :Once again you have mastered a piece of wood that would be junk to 90% of turners you master it. I’m glad and look forward to watching your videos daily. THANKS for your time and work
Much appreciated, Dave! 😄
Phil. I think all your hard work on this really paid off - well worth the effort! Now I think you deserve a round of applause and at least a dozen beers, you probably need it!
Already done, Paul! LOL!
You are the only person I know that would attempt this piece. It is a very beautiful piece of art. The wood grain is amazing and I'm so glad you were able to save the bark.
Thank you very much, Jean! 😄
Thank you Nate. Thank you Phil “the Bark Man” Anderson. No “Flying Wood” t-shirt for you this time! Great seat of pants, suspense video. Next time you get that soft punky wood like that, brush on sanding sealer, then continue turning. It does a great job of stiffening the fibers without filling up the voids. It will save you from a whole ton of extra sanding.
Yeah, I wish I could think of stuff like that during the filming of the video, Valerie. Mostly I'm thinking of camera angles and lighting, editing, stuff like that. Sometimes I think about turning, too! 😄
7:52 PM CST .. The master always overcomes adversity.. beautiful bowl Phil !
Thank you, Cecil! 😄
Who else would turn that indeed? Only Phil. Great piece.
😄
As usual, I was doing what I love in watching the Phil Anderson magic show. This is my favorite part of the day. I saw no fear only ultimate confidence. I was glad to know the best encounters what I have to deal with on a daily basis. I was glad to see how you dealt with bad cracks, very punkey wood, and lose bark. These projects take a lot more time than anticipated and it is well worth it, The results speak for themselves. It turned out JUST STUNNING!!!!! Don't feel afraid to show it to anyone!!!!! KEEP ON TURNING
Thanks, I appreciate your great comment! 😊
Another non-epoxy Masterpiece from Phil
Thanks for noticing, Cliff! 😄
It blows my mind that you can take a piece of wood that looks like something you would put in your fireplace or fire pit and turn it into something of a piece of art!👏Nice work! 👍😊💖
That's the fun in turning for me, Sunshine! 😄
That was a good question, Phil. Who else would turn that? Not many, I’m sure. But not many have your talent, my friend. Another excellent piece in the Anderson household. Thanks for sharing!
Take care,
…..Gord
Haha, thanks, buddy! Fortunately, we have a group of turners not nearly as dumb as me. LOL! I was happy when I took it out of the jaws and it held together. 😄
You are a determined man, Phil! Looks great. My favorite part was you laughing at the situation and your stubbornness😉
Glad you enjoyed it, Robin! 😄
Phil, you handled that bowl like a new born puppy with great results. Thank goodness for CA glue.
And thank good for puppies, Kid! 😄
That's going to be a humdinger of a beautiful bowl. The grain is absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!! Love it's beauty cracks of life. We all have them.
So true, Judith! 😄
I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for NOT using resin. There are very good artists creating masterpieces with resin, but you take so much care in preserving the beauty and character of the natural wood! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it, Ernesto! 😄 Yes, I think there is room for every type of turner.
Ooo, Maestro, this was a nail biter... I was expecting there to be a bit of a dramatic conclusion. Well held together, and fantastic work, as always. Mother nature really made you work for this one, sir.
Jay
Yeah, I think she had it out for me but I fooled her, Jay! Thank you! 😄
Really neat! I love when you do a "daredevil project". Keeps us on the edge of our seats. Also your joke about using a painting as a charcuterie board really cracked me up.
Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed it, Argus, thank you! 😄
...and he persevered! Way to go, Phil.
Thank you, Louis! 😄
Most of my turns are like yours. I’m retired and belong to a shop called the Sawmill. Lots. Of great people. I’m known for rescuing wood from the dumpster. I also get wood from other turners with the comment that it looks like a Dave piece. I really appreciate you videos.
Dave from Surprise Arizona.
Good to know, Dave, thanks! 😄
Only you the bark master could do that. I didn't realize how much sanding you got to do until I turned my first bowl. Turning it was easier
Thanks Phil!!!! God bless
Yup, often more time sanding then turning but that's just way it goes. 😄
For 24 minutes I held my breath as I was sure it was going to pop in half. You have put a lot of time into this bowl with all the glue jobs you did on this piece. But at the end of all this the product is sensational. I really like this bowl.
Thanks for the show.
Joel
I'm glad you and the bowl survived the ordeal, Joel! 😄
You search for art from nature is contagious. You have a great eye for grain pattern. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much, Garry! 😊
As Captain Kirk may have said, these are the voyages of the shady acres woodshop seeking out crazy wood to boldly go where no man has gone before. 😂
Another great piece Phil.
Haha, a true Treky, Mark! 😄
Well, you said it yourself, Phil; "Who else would turn this?" - only the Master himself! We can rely on you to be 'Mr Natural' and once again you deliver an amazing masterclass of what can be done, and an amazing bowl once it has been done! Great job, great video.
Wow, thanks, David! 😄
Boy, I was on the edge of my seat wondering if the wood was going to break apart! Another wood turner would have poured epoxy all over that piece of wood and ruined its natural beauty. Thank you for letting us watch you create another beautiful piece of art, Phil.
I really appreciate this, Janet, thank you so much! 😄
Hi Mr. Anderson Just started to watch your videos as I have just started turning myself. Liked and subscribed. Watched your video where you said you had part of
lung removed and were going to start chemo, your still putting out videos so presume all went well. Lost my wife 6 years ago to cancer so wish
you successful treatment of yours. I am picking up all kinds of hints to help me so keep making shavings. Bob
Thank you for your subscription, Bob, I will try to be worthy. I am fully recovered. Four years since I lost my wife so I know what you have gone through. Good to know you are keeping busy and enjoying your turning, keep at it! 😄
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Thanks Phil, you are more than worthy, really enjoy your videos and learn a lot. Keep up the good work.
"Maybe not your change." LOL!! Great work, and great effort to save the bark. Thanks. Like Douglas McCart says, your work is definitely different than all the others who remove bark and use epoxy.
Thank you so much, D! 😃
So, the woodturning gods were with you on this one! Looks great!
Thank you, Steve! 😄
The word that comes to mind, if you'll excuse me, is cojones. Not sure I would have taken this on but so glad you did. Thanks!
I'm just glad it stayed together, Michael! Thanks for watching! 😄
That bark had very little holding it on. WOW! Beautiful.
True enough, Lyle! 😄
Wow; outstanding... This is why I look forward to Friday mornings. Thank you Phil.
Thanks for watching, Andrew! 😄
Well Phil, I was pretty skeptical that that chunk was gonna hang together but I should have known the master could pull it off!! Cool piece!!
Thank you, Richard! Sometimes ya get lucky! 😄
When I tell people I learn turning from CZcams this is the sort of thing they warn me about. 😅
LOL! I learned on CZcams, too, Dan. Not sure I ever say anyone doing these kinds of pieces, though. Probably a lot smarter than I am! 😄
Good for you for keeping the epoxy out. I am not a big fan of epoxy. Just keep it natural. Thanks Phil for doing so!
You are welcome, Lance! 😄
Another beauty Phil. I can’t believe that Tenon held together. 😂
Haha, thanks, Moe! 😄
Lot of daylight showing through there Phil ! Can't believe you managed to get it done . Great work . 👍
Thanks, Jim! 😄
That was amazing. I kept my fingers crossed. I thought it was going to fly away at any moment. Hurray!❤
Haha, we got lucky, Vickie! 😄
Mr McCart get well soon.
Phil your a crazy man but always come through with fantastic bowls.
Haha, crazy? Yeah, maybe a little or maybe I just feel like I've lived a good long life! 😄
Phil, how you approach each turning truly amazes me. You take the outcasts of others and tun then into AMAZING pieces of art that can be used for decoration or..... M&Ms. You are a truly blessed and talented person. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and uncanny ability to turn cracked, punky, and often times discarded wood into masterpieces.
Wow, thank you, Dan! 😄 I hope you have finally got some turning going on, my friend!
@Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop Not quite yet, but I'm looking forward to it. should be done with all these projects soon, and then I can get back at it. 😁Thank you for sharing your talent with us my friend.
Patience and perseverance pays off once again. Great work keep doing what you do it’s perfect.
Excellent, thank you, Dale! 😄
Phil I'm very glad you always work with a net, in the form of a face shield...truly. First it was the dust storm, then the bark was lifting and threatening to come off, then the crack got messy on that one side, and then you had an iffy tenon, but you kept persevering...as you do. I might have spit it at the crack...I don't know. I know how important the bark is to you so I get why you kept fixing it, but it's Plum and even without the bark it's beautiful wood with great grain patterns. At any rate Phil, I'm VERY happy to hear you so clearly say that it is ART. That's a big step for you and I want to honor it. Yes Phil, you make Art! :-D
Haha, thank you so much! 😄
Wow. I wasn't sure that was going to hold for you. Glad it did. Turned out beautifully.
Thank you, Laura! 😄
Very nice job, not many people would take the time to turn a piece of wood with that big of a crack.
Probably not, Ronnie and maybe that's a good thing! 😄
Phil, you did a fantastic job with this piece of firewood 🪵 Well done, you 👏🏻 I love it, there is a great deal of beauty in something cracked and scarred, all it takes is handling with love, and the beauty will shine, as you have well demonstrated ☺️👍🏻 Thank you, Phil, I would call this the Dolly Parton bowl… Nooooo, not because of what you are thinking now 🫣😳 because it makes me think of her song “bargain store” 😉😂 Have a great weekend, Phil ☀️
Haha, nobody can say Dolly Parton without think that, Morning Song! I like the bargain store reference, thank you! 😄
Hi Phil, That is indeed beautiful.
I have found one thing out this morning and that is I can't drink my tea while holding my breath. LOL.
That is an amazing piece of turning which I believe not many people would have even started to do let alone get such a wonderful piece at the end.
Fantastic Phil.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Haha, I wish I could have seen you try, Huw! LOL! Thank you, my friend! 😄
Ok so here is my problem……..I don’t know which one is my favorite!!!! I love them all, but this it at the top of the list ❤. Beautiful, I love the imperfections that you turned into a beautiful piece. Love this ❤
Howdy, Colleen! Cool, I'm glad you like it! It was worth my time then! Thank you! 😄
Nicely done your skill was showing. I laugh every when you say " its' in the book". Based upon your turnings your books and storage must be amazing. Take care guy!!
Glad you enjoyed it, John! 😄 Yeah, it's a big house! LOL!
I agree what others have said Phil, this was a risky piece but well worth it just to show how it grew. Soup is off the menu again😊
No soup for you! LOL! Thank you, Jeff! 😄
That is beautiful Phil! No epoxy needed. I really like epoxy pieces but it would absolutely ruin the natural beauty of what you do. Your stuff is on whole different level. And very much appreciated.
Very kind of you, Karen, thank you, I'm glad you like it! 😄
That crack kept putting the frighteners on us all, with the bark coming loose as well, but in the end as you said, not just a bowl, but an Art Work, move over Picasso…
Haha, yeah, move over! LOL! Thank you for the smiles this morning, Margaret! 😄
Yes! It is a very beautiful usable bowl. Keep on turning!!!!!
Thank you, I will, Dianne! 😄
That took a crazy amount of patience and dedication. 👏
Thank you, John! 😄
Never carved any plum before. Always wanted to carve some persimmon. That plum is gorgeous.
It is! 😄
Just wanted to thank you Phil for the great videos. Been watching them for a while and find you very funny and informative. Your camera work is excellent, I like being able to see how you hold and turn the tools.
I'm an almost 55 year old new wood turner who has turned a few pens and bowl blanks the last couple months and I hope to do some live edge turning once I recover from this herniated disc that has about crippled me. For the last week I've been sitting around watching turning videos and other wood working stuff on CZcams. I'm bored too tears and really want to get back to turning.
Thanks again.

Oh yeah, those hurt, Jim! Quick healing and back to the shop wishes for you! 😄
I think you knew it would be a challenge before you started still the end result was worth the effort, good job Phil. 😁
I knew the bark was going to be an issue, Lewis. I didn't really know the extent of the crack until I got into it. But, time invested, ya know, so I pressed on! 😄
You have taken an UGLY DUCKEN of the wood world and found the SWAN in it.
Only you have this talent!!
I know you have probably been asked this a thousand times or more but indulge me. What
made you turn to this avenue of woodturning?
How long have you been turning wood?
Such a GREAT creation!!
3/23/23 4:43 PST
Thank you, Colleen! Well, it's a funny story. I've been a woodworker for more than 50 years. Once I retired and had more time for the shop, I found myself freezing cold in the winter. I still wanted to be out there so, I figured if I stood in one place and pointed a little heater at me, I'd be OK. So, I became a turner! 😄 I've been turning seriously for about five years.
Howdie High there Phil
Darrell Pizzagoni from Redding here
Wowie Zowie !!
Shear talent
Mind the Phun
Amazing how you helped maintain the integrity of that piece
So I received a beautiful piece of pear that I will turn this weekend.
Large enough to get two projects
One natural edge
One regular
First experience with plum
So excited
As usual you're my HERO Phil
Wow, thank you, Darrell! 😄 Every time I pass through Redding I get a ticket!
She's a beauty bowl for sure. Thanks for saving the bark too. Sincerely,
Thank you, Ms Bee! 😄
Wow! I was holding my breath the whole time. It’s beautiful!
Breathe, breathe, Denise, it's over! 😄 Thank you!
Well Phil, I would have carried on!! Honest to goodness, when I get a piece like that I always think to myself "what would Phil do?" I've said it a few times before, but you have changed the way I look at wood. A lot of the things I turn today likely would have been in a burn pile. This time though you had a real challenge!! Of course you carried on and made an exceptional piece of art. Plum at best is a cracky test, but spalted as well.......Hmmmm! Thank you.
Cheers, Rick
When we get a hold of piece of beautiful wood like this, Rick, I think we have to do our best to bring out it's best. I'm glad you agree! 😄
Another hit out of the park, Phil. It's always a pleasure seeing your work. I always look forward to seeing what you post on your next video. Blessings.
Awesome, thank you, Dave! 😄
This has a lot of character. Beautiful.
Thank you, Khan! 😄
As usual Phil an excellent turn ... I'm with you .... keep things as natural as possible 🙂.
Great video my friend.
Cheers.
Mike
I appreciate you watching and your comment, Mike, thank you! 😄
You are always challenging yourself Phil. And what a wonderful piece.
Thank you, Michael! 😄
It’s beautiful. It looked like a real challenge. I’m brand new with turning and learn a little with each video. Thanks
I'm so glad, Edwina, thank you and have fun! 😊
That was some challenge, Phil. If I was a turner, I would have split it down that crack, and fed it to my woodburner. However, you are the master, and have created a beautiful bowl. I agree about epoxy: a natural finish for me!
Ya just never know until you try, Richard! 😄
Phil, you are a true artist! I would have passed on that or cut it through the Crack. I'm a chicken my friend. I've had pieces fly off the lathe numerous times. I don't understand turners who do not use a face shield. That and my mask are the first things I put on when I turn I am so glad you stress that in each and every video. Have a great weekend dear.
I like chicken, Jane! LOL! I've had my share of flying pieces, too. Just be sure to stay out of the line of fire. I'm glad you are safety conscious, my friend. I will, you have a good weekend, too! 😄
One more time, you have done a super good job. It turned out beautifully! Keep up the good work brother!!
Thanks! Will do! 😊
Phil, that bowl is gorgeous! I love the grain and the crack! You are definitely a Master!
Thank you, Carol! 😄
I'm glad it held together, Phil. That wood has some really nice grain.
Bill
Me too, Bill! Thanks for watching! 😄
Howdy Phil! It's another beauty! 👍👍 So glad you were able to save the bark.
Thanks, R G! 😄
Well Phil your hard work paid off again. I think that bowl came out great. Thank you for sharing. It gives us that are learning a lot to think about, we can try anything and not give up.
Never give up, Fred! You've got the right attitude! 😄
Phil this bowl looks awesome. I love the natural crack and bark. As always thanks for sharing. Be well my friend
Thank you, Linda! 😄
See you in the morning with my mug of Tea Phil
I'll be waiting, Huw! 😄
Anyone else hear Burl Ives ? The piece was fun to watch as it changed.
😄
That was a challenging piece for sure. But the end result was worth it.
I'm glad you think so, doc, thank you! 😄
I was thinking as you finished the outside and before you started the inside, “this would be a good one to wrap with plastic wrap.” As I saw the depths of the inside I was hoping you would stop and wrap it. That you never got the speed way up nor did you try to turn it thin probably helped a great deal in keeping it together. Super job turning a beautiful piece that so easily could have become firewood. Thanks for sharing it Phil.
I just don't think of stuff like that while turning, Doug. I'm thinking about camera angles, lighting, editing and, oh yeah, turning! LOL! Glad you like it, thank you! 😄
Thank You Phil, Thank You Nate.... A little late Phil (had to go to the rib joint so now sitting, watching with a big bib on, ha)... This bowl did give you some serious concerns but with a lot of ingenuity, glue, manipulation (Phil-er-a-zation?) you were able to successfully complete another trophy piece of almost too far gone Spalted Plum at it's ragged edge of turnability..At 22:29 the bark is like a small bridge detached above the wood. YOU PULLED IT OFF & FUN TO WATCH !!! Until next time.... TM
Don't get those sticky fingers all over your mouse, Tuffy! Yeah, this one was a tuffy, too! I was going to fill those voids under the bark but once I saw it finished, I liked that "bridge" effect, too. I'm just glad it stuck together. Thank you, buddy! 😄
Phil only thing I can add to this video is you show to your viewers what's determination and patience and god-given talent you can do with wood. God Bless you Phil...
Wow, thank you, Kim! 😄
What a strange and beautiful grain. I love that it worked. Hard work does pay off.
Thank you, Christine! 😃
Amazing how you kept this piece together. Really turned out great.
Thank you, Earl! 😊 Cheers!
It is absolutely beautiful I love the crack in the bottom it gives it character.
Glad you like it, Debbie, thank you! 😄
Such a great piece!!! So glad it stayed together for you!!!👍🙂
Thanks, Ron, me too! 😄
At the beginning, I wS thinking you should drill through on both sides and glue in a dowel to hold it together. Never did i think it would hold together. Good job and a beautiful piece of art.
Thank you, Thomas! 😄
HI Phil u always make me smile at the pieces u turn. thank u.
Glad to hear that! 😄
It's another lovely piece of work, Phil. Even with that Grand Canyon of a crack. 🙂
Glad you like it, Richard, thank you! 😄
I was holding my breath. Great looking bowl.
Thank you, George! 😄
You 'crack' me up Phil! I think it's beautiful, very much worth the effort.
Haha, thanks, Ben! 😄
Great job Phil! I was really worried that it was going to explode on you. It came out really nice. Well done and take care.
Yay, success! Thank you! 😄
Phil, you have a lot of determination to keep gluing the bark back on. As usual you took a questionable piece of wood and turned it into a masterpiece.
Thank you, Kevin! 😄
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop monk.
Beautiful piece!
I'm glad that you're out there doing things your way. The variety is good. There are some beautiful epoxy pieces of there, too, but if everyone did that, we'd be missing out on the sort of stuff you're doing now.
Thank you so much for this, Benjamin! 😄
I love your art description. It was spot on. I give all of my bowls to friends. They are not near as good as yours but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I never give a bowl to a friend with any expectation other than to create enjoyment and Phil your videos exceed my expectations and provide an enormous amount of enjoyment. God bless
So kind of you, Rick! Thank you so much, buddy! 😄
That would make a lovely yarn bowl. Lovely. ❤
😊
Have you ever considered wrapping the outside with blue painters tape for stability? I do it for piece of mind. I was gritting my teeth a couple times during the video. Glad it came out well. Mask and face shield on!!!!!
As I was telling Doug in another comment, I just don't think of things like that, Ken. I'm thinking about camera angles, lighting and editing. I'm glad it worked out, too! 😄
Wonderful!! The grain and color in that plum wood is absolutely beautiful! I think this might be my favorite of all the things I've watched you turn. Though I haven't seen one I don't like, lol! I'm glad you don't use epoxy. As always, thank you for sharing what you do!
Thank you so much, Lorelyn! 😊
