"It’s reputed to be dirty and dangerous at night - but the Red Light District has transformed a lot over the past years and somehow it attracts me and always means a fun night. It’s these contrasts, the colours, the liveliness, the many people in the street, the unseen world of the city that makes it exciting for me.
The atmosphere is unlike any other area I know in Frankfurt. It is the habitat of prostitutes and drug addicts, but it is also home to different cultures and some of the trendiest restaurants in the city in beautiful houses from the late 19th century. I love having a look around the little green-groceries offering fruit and vegetables from all around the world, maybe the biggest variety in Frankfurt.
The best night in the district for me is having dinner at Club Michel (check the Club Michel article) going for drinks at Chez Ima and then dancing the night away at Pik Dame (check the Pik Dame article).
The “Bahnhofsviertelnacht”, night of the Red Light District, is probably the best event. It takes place once a year and allows an insight to various places that are usually inaccessible or not desirable to be at: for example different brothels, a drug addiction help center, but also the shoemaker with his little hammer museum. There are lots of people in the street, there is live music everywhere and the atmosphere is nothing but special. Keep an eye out for next year’s date." - www.spottedbylocals.com/frank...
"Frankfurt's red-light district is in Bahnhofsviertel. The core of the district consists of Elbestraße, Moselstraße and Taunusstraße. The district was more and more dominated by prostitution, especially after 1945. The reason being that during World War II, the area was only slightly damaged by bombs, and that many of the hotels located there were used by the US occupation forces for the accommodation of military personnel. The great poverty of the German population and the in comparison very wealthy US soldiers formed the sociocultural background for the emergence of the red light district at this point.[3] During the Cold War era, American soldiers referred to it as Kaiserstraße, or K-Street.
There are a number of brothels in Frankfurt's Bahnhofsviertel.[4] In 1969, the Frankfurt contractors received Willi Schütz's approval for the opening of the first large brothel at 49-53 Elbestraße. The project was supported by the then Frankfurt police chief Gerhard Littmann, who saw in the creation of an Eros Center in the vicinity of the city the only way to deal with the numerous complaints about "commercial malnutrition" in residential areas.[5] The 180-room establishment now bears the name Crazy Sexy and is the largest brothel in Germany. In 2013, five percent of prostitutes came from Germany; most came from Eastern Europe, Latin America or Asia.[4] The Rote Haus at 34 Taunusstrasse has six floors and 67 rooms. There are 14 brothels in the station district.[6]
In the neighborhood there are occasionally large raids by the police.[7][8] Counseling centers include the Diakonisches Werk operated Tamara project[4][9] under the guidance of Doña Carmen." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahnhof....
