Bruce Campbell on Making ‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ without the Rights to ‘Army of Darkness’

- I very much enjoy the gruesome splatterfest in Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead remake, but the new Starz series, Ash vs. Evil Dead, is what the franchise fans have really been waiting for. Bruce Campbell returns as everyone’s favorite arrogant yet lovable chainsaw-wielding Value Stop (formerly S-Mart) employee, Ash. He’s been pretty content working as a stock boy, hanging out in his trailer and picking up ladies by flaunting his fake hand, but when he accidentally winds up unleashing the evil of the Necronomicon, he’s got no choice but to arm up and take out some Deadites again.
The most striking quality of the Ash vs. Evil Dead pilot is how much it feels like it’s part of the original trilogy, which likely has a little something to do with the fact that it’s a Campbell/Sam Raimi reunion. While promoting the show’s October 31st debut, I got the opportunity to sit down with Campbell to discuss the process of picking additional directors to helm future episodes, why they couldn’t get the rights to Army of Darkness, how he was feeling about the future of the franchise after the release of the 2013 remake and much more.

Ash vs Evil Dead is possibly the most fun to watch TV show ever. Too many shows these days have their heads up their own ass that far that they completely forget about fun.
That fun factor also got overdone in the show and caused it to be way too diluted, even Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness knew how to reign themselves in from the comedy and slapstick when they needed too. Season 2 and 3 was a mess because of that.

I enjoyed the last two seasons, and they had their own degree of outright horror, though usually some element of humor to this. Season 1 was almost between the first and second movies in tone, the 2nd and 3rd season are more of a continuation of Army of Darkness in regards to tone.

They were smart and didn’t make any explicit references to Army of Darkness. I think the scene where Ash explains everything at the cabin is even more funny when you consider that he didn’t want to melt Pablo’s brain entirely by telling him “OH YEAH AND I GOT SUCKED INTO A TIME VORTEX AND FOUGHT THEM IN MEDIEVAL TIMES”
Works out that army of darkness ends with Ash back at S-mart anyway. So the shows opener still technically eludes to AoD being canonical
@@juiceboxbzrk towards the end of season 2 he does make reference that he did already go back in time before so why couldn't they just read the spell again so they can prevent the book from ever being opened in the 80s (even mentions he fought in medieval times during this aswell show a brief flashback to the evil dead 2 ending)
They actually do mention army of darkness because he does specifically say he time travel to medieval times

+LibertyMan As much as I love Bruce Campbell, he does have a tendency, especially now more than ever, to go into complete smartass mode when doing interviews or doing convention appearances. It's part of his charm but sometimes can get old quick. He still is hands down one of the wittiest guys out there, and his autobiography is still one of the most entertaining books I've ever had the chance to read.

I honestly think he's just sick of boring interviews, and she was able to be professional, ask interesting questions, and hold his attention. He seems to be a smart as when he feels he needs to elevate the entertainment value of something. He probably felt the interview was entertaining enough as is.

It's not called S-Mart, but its mentioned that Ash has seniority over his boss.
Actually though we COULD get to see at least somewhat of a reference as Evil Dead 2 which is clearly the cut off point has Ash end up in the past with knights and so on, and since Army of Darkness had King Arthur in it(Who is public domain) they could either full on reference it or have Ash end up in the past again for a season, or make it a wink and nod thing of "yeah I time traveled keep up" and all that.
They officially have the right to Army of Darkness now. Supposedly they said they'd make references to Army of Darkness in Season 2, but I have no idea if they have. I haven't watched Season 2 yet. If they didn't make references to it in Se2, they'll surely add references in Season 3

Funny that Ash appears as one of the characters in the Telltale game Poker Night 2, and there they got the rights from MGM! So in that game he's referred to as Ash "from Army of Darkness", and there are a lot of references to the movie, but they can't mention anything from Evil Dead 1 or 2. The complete opposite.

I am 36 years old.....I know evil dead like my back pocket. The remake was not bad, but when I heard they make a series........with Bruce Campbell.
I watched it with big hopes and wishes. And boy o boy they were all fulfilled! It's absolutely true to the franchise and I enjoy every second of it.

Army of Darkness had a totally different feel from the other movies, but it was still cool, I still loved it. I'm just sooooo happy they made the TV show and with Sam Rami in the mix that NEVER happens! Bruce Campbell is just the best.
Army of Darkness is more like Evil Dead two than Two is like one. The first one is an actual attempt at a horror movie.
They did a fantastic job with all 3 seasons. So fun!

Damn Ash vs Evil Dead is such a great show. CZcams recommended me this video for some reason (maybe because of Dr Strange) and now all I want is to re-watch the show again. Hail to the King Baby.
This is a fun interview to go back and watch now that the entire show has been aired. It's funny that people were nervous that it would be good. It was great. And while we all knew Bruce was going to be great by bringing back Ash, we were also treated to Dana DeLorenzo's great new character of Kelly. I would not mind seeing her carry the next installment of Evil Dead.
Really good interview, actually asked him about the production instead of just hot celeb gossip or "what was it like working with Beyonce" type shit. She got him to genuinely talk about real behind the scenes things that gave you real insight into what it must have been like to try to bring this to fruition.

Ash vs. Evil Dead never says that Ash didn't travel back in time to 1300 AD, they just can't mention it in the narrative. Although it is tricky considering you have to ignore how Ash was somehow able to make a robotic prosthetic hand for himself out of spare parts from a castle armory, yet he has to use a wooden prosthetic hand in 2015. lol

I have to be the first to say I was always a fan of evil dead but wondered what the the heck took them so long to make it into a tv show back in the day. I mean the movies were great don't get me wrong but It always felt like there could of been so much more. I just am kind of in shock after all the years we waited there is finally a new evil dead and I loved it, back in the day I did read the books and play the video games and I think Evil dead was pretty amazing for the story line and how they made Ash and I got hooked on it because he wasn't the typical hero for a horror/Comedy it was something fun and new.
Need to bring this show back. Sucks it only latest 3 season's 😭

I know deadite Evil Ash is a no-go because his look is a direct addition to Army of Darkness, but I still hope he comes back in season 2. He's usually the ultimate enemy to Ash Williams, like Lore to his Data.

The biggest mistake ever made in movie history, was not making an "Evil Dead 4" in the apocalypse setting of the future while Bruce was in his prime.
