Richard was married to Diana Dors who was considered Britain's Marilyn Monroe. She dumped him right around the time Richard got the Hogan's Heroes part. Richard didn't get over it easily (who would?). He was still getting over it when these shows were taped. He clowned around and probably the crew knew how he felt.

It's always a source of fascination for me to watch Richard when a contestant leaves the show. I watch who he does and who he doesn't wave to or acknowledge. I find it very interesting.
at 8:53, Gene starts his regular schtick about his turnout. Richard's quip at 9:01 about "that kept Gene out the army" gets a snarky reaction from Charles, who starts saying something to Richard about "the oldest jokes straight from..." Then Richard says something I can't make out in reply, and Charles responds "I love you," and throws a kiss! I think Charles was a very good sport about the gay jokes.
Richard's Mike Douglas Show episode with Game Show Host aired July 28, 1975 if this is the one he mentions.. And if this is the one that Brett mentions aired in August! ;0)
It's been in several of the episodes previous, also. It's an artifact that has something to do with the cameras using tubes and accidentally shooting into a light. The old tube cameras couldn't do that without damaging them.

That Dawson had a lot of nerve (As conceited & arrogant) as he was - he made fun of CNReilly as being gay. He should of talk he was always imitating Paul Lynde & always putting his pinkie out. Come on Dawson. And he thought he was funny doing Stan laurel too. And stop putting those puffy rubber lips out. They make me sick. Turn you off a lot of times. Sorry.

It's called acting, playing for the camera etc. Charles had no problem with it. Richard and Charles were great friends. Charles could hold his own with Saint Richard. Lol

By the Friday airing they were usually feeling pretty happy! There were food and cocktails in between the taping of shows!
