  • The Roadkill Muscle Truck is one of the show’s most famous project cars. It’s a 1974 Chevy C10 stepside pickup loaded with an aluminum LS6 engine that runs 13.20s in the quarter mile, naturally aspirated. People ask us more about the combo all the time, so this Roadkill Extra goes deep inside the truck-including the secrets of its awesome sound.
We’ve provided this free episode on CZcams to give you a taste of Roadkill Extra so you can decide if you'd like to subscribe for more episodes.

I'm sure there's been some highs & lows. It would be cool to get a "Star Wars Episode 1" perspective on Fri/Finn/Dul from over the years. I saw the episode of how David met Steve- would be great and inspiring to see what it has taken to get to where Roadkill is today. Really- thanks for the work.

It's pretty massive, while not particularly expensive I'd estimate 50-60 bucks at a hole in the wall sign shop, more if you have them put it on. The expense comes in shipping it out. It would have to be rolled in a tube and tubes cost money and shipping is more than just a stamp.

The Roadkill Muscle Truck always reminds me of something I saw in a magazine when I was kid.
Mr. Freiburger may remember an automotive magazine called "PV4", which stood for "Pickups, Vans, and 4-wheel drives".
It was a mag dedicated to those types of vehicles and in a time before Consumer's Reports existed, this was your bible, if you were considering buying a pickup, van or 4-wheel drive, because all they did were new vehicle and new product tests. There might be 5 or 6 tests in a magazine, interspersed with editorial articles, like "ask the editor" or "tech tips", those kinds of things.
They started in 1972 and were a quarterly publication through 1973, going monthly for the next 10 years until it became "Vans and Mini trucks" in the early 80's, reflecting that craze at that time.
Anyway, it was either the 2nd or 3rd quarter issue from 1973, they featured a test on a 1/2 ton Chevy truck.
That was a brand new body style then (what we now refer to as the "square body") and the example they got for the test was a 1/2 ton, short and narrow with a big ol' 454/TH400 setup, probably with 3.73's in the rear end (which was the stock ratio all Chevy trucks got back then).
Their opinion was Chevy did a good job updating the truck and the drive train made it one of the funnest vehicles any of them had driven in recent memory.
In fact, my dad replaced his 1960 Apache 10 with a 1974 Chevy C10, partly due to that article.
I remember they did a big centerfold action picture of the truck in that issue, with someone pulling a big ol' brodie on a dirt lot somewhere.
Cool as heck, to a 10-year old. 😉
I remember it was red and that redd-ish fender on the Roadkill Muscle truck, plus the short and narrow bed and square body body style, always takes me back to seeing that picture in that magazine (which I might still have....somewhere).
Anyway, little anecdote from my life experiences.

these trucks are so easy to mis mash - my 69 has a late 70's early 80's 305 (with quadrajet), a chev tailgate, 90's dodge seats(actually fit really well, i recommend this mod!). And transmission...I have no clue there, all I seem to have it D R and N L1 and L2 there is just a wall (it is a 3 speed!) (I also do not have neutral disconnect or reverse lights!). And my heater control unit seems to be from some sort of 80's Gm, in the summer I need to recirculate my water hoses by -passing the heater core (otherwise I cook out). I do say, this 305 with just pipes (no muffler) is amazing - when those secondaries open up it sounds like the gates of hell opened lol.

Maybe mentioned already, that should be an aftermarket hood. I had a 78 and the original hoods had the center ripple go all the way down the nose. Mine kinked as they commonly did and the aftermarket ones I found had the wide mustache coming off the center ripple on the front. I maybe wrong but this is what I came across 15 + years ago.

In this episode Freiburger makes it very clear that the Muscle Truck is indeed a 1974.
Then in the description it gets listed as a 1975?
I'm assuming that was meant to be a joke? LOL
*The Roadkill Muscle Truck is one of the show’s most famous project cars. It’s a 1975 Chevy C10 stepside pickup loaded with an aluminum LS6 engine that runs 13.20s in the quarter mile, naturally aspirated. People ask us more about the combo all the time, so this Roadkill Extra goes deep inside the truck-including the secrets of its awesome sound.*

I love Roadkill. I want to convert my 2000 GMC 3500HD dually to 4WD. It has the factory I-beam axle in the front with leaf springs, a Dana 80 in the rear, 7.4 Vortec (454) and a 4L80E trans. Not sure if I should go with a Dana 60 or Dana 70 in the front. Any advice? Is one axle easier to work with?
