    3 years now and I still love this post. Takes me back to days of learning and failing miserably. Now things are pretty much straight forward but the unexpected still rules my friend. Seems like I am still in school and loving it my FRIEND. I got one set of sticks poured yesterday and will work away on the files and sanding today. Tomorrow I am off to the city to get my new Forever Leg and will get the 2nd pair poured on Thursday this week. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to finish each stick and although I didn't film the pours I am going to film the finishing with tips on files, saws and sanding your pieces. Great to revisit this and will holler soon on how things are coming along old friend. Take care eh.

    100 gram bars are my favorite by far. Just the right size for stacking and barter. These I would definitely be hanging on to.I sure know how hard it is to hit a weight. Even pre-weighing and using cup and torch it can be real hit and miss. I suppose that's why I like sand pours. It is always a wonder. Well done today my friend, well done !

Also, it would be great if you could tell me what equipment you'd recommend from blow torches, moulds, crucibles, gloves, tongs, etc... and where they can be purchased from as I'd like to have a go myself and have never done it before. Could you pour onto a scale? If you zero'd out the mold (and a protective base) you could get real close to your desired weight. Now I have never poured molten metal, but I would think if you poured just shy, you could then drop a few molten drips at the end? Just wondering...
    Anyway, the bars look very cool!

    • @BackyardBullion
      @BackyardBullion  Před 6 lety +1

      It is something I considered but it is not practical. Think of the silver as a very thick liquid and stopping when you see a number on a scale is quite hard to do. Especially as the whole pour into the mold takes about 1.5 seconds! It is not as easy as it looks!

      Yep - eyeballing it all the way. Makes for a much better pour.

    • @Kaynos
      @Kaynos Před 6 lety

      Why can you weight exactly 100g of shots and melt it ? Will it give a 100g bar or is there any loss in the process ?

    • @BackyardBullion
      @BackyardBullion  Před 6 lety +1

      It would give 100g but you also get lots of graphite pollution on the bar. You can clean that off with vinegar and sand paper but it distorts the ripples and makes it look not so nice. I aim for really high quality bars each time and to do this I "stop short" of the dregs of the silver and end up with a nicer looking bar.

    The water from the quench may be adding weight? Perhaps let them fully dry out. Can't imagine the water adds much.. but it might.

      Yes there would be a small addition of water from residue on the bar, but it is miniscule. We are creating approximately 100g bars, not exactly 100g bars!

      They are still great looking bars. I like how much attention you pay to the details of the pour. There are a lot of very sloppy bars out there that have no artistic value.

      Thanks for that feedback, I really want every bar to look as good as possible, that is why I do what I do and how I do it. You will see all 150 of these bars this weekend, they are nearly done!

      Well, I would rather that than burn my work top! What is the problem with the wood being there, not going to set on fire and if it did I have an extinguisher and fire blanket on standby

    That is "Silver Town" hallmark. Why?
