    great videos , working with pianos (the woodworking), whenever we need high-grit sandpaper and don't have any handy; we use paper bags - I've heard it said that a paper bag is 1000-3000 grit sandpaper... it's amazing how a little moisture on a grocery bag or school lunch bag can help smoth a poly-finish or shellac finish , nice to see that technique in silver-smithing thanks

    Hi, I want to ask. I also melt silver into bars, but the graphite crucible doesn't last long. After only a short melting, it crumbles. Do you use borax? I have a small electric furnace. Thank you :)

    • @BackyardBullion
      @BackyardBullion  Před 3 lety

      Yep, it's part of the process, graphite crucibles degrade over time, I manage about 8x 90 minute cycles out of mine then I have to buy new ones.

    Looks like adding silver shot to a mold to get the weight right, and them melting it in the mold would be the way to go.

    • @BackyardBullion
      @BackyardBullion  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I'm sorry buddy, keep trying and experimenting with different set ups. Change any variable you can think of. Are you using 999 silver? You won't get ripples with anything less.

      @@BackyardBullion no worries. I’ll eventually figure it out. It’s Sterling that I refined. So it’s either pure or close to but I’ll try with 100% pure see if that’s it. Thank u for the advice. Love the videos

    • @BackyardBullion
      @BackyardBullion  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah, unless it's 999 it won't ripple property.

    What type silver are you melting? Aren’t you devaluating the price of silver by turning into a bar?

  • @TheFutureisTheFuture

    why does it look like there is blue flake in the bar? Just the lighting??

    • @BackyardBullion
      @BackyardBullion  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Those are crystalline structures of the cooled silver. It happens when the air temperature is very cold

    • @BackyardBullion
      @BackyardBullion  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I do, it doesn't have to be that cold, 15-16 degrees sometimes does it. If I do an early morning pour in the winter it could be very cold!

    Why can't you just weigh the silver before you melt it, so you just pour the full cup?

    • @mickeylickey123
      @mickeylickey123 Před rokem +1

      I do that but during the melting process you lose silver. I noticed a layer of dust on the work bench, swept it up and melted it. It weighed quite a bit. It's hard to judge how much over weight you have to make it before melting. Sometimes I end up under weight and have to remelt

    • @anylife_photography
      @anylife_photography Před rokem +1
