So today on my CRUZE build I tackle the MAMBA wastegate actuator. This is an important part of the turbo system on the 1.4 CRUZE. For example my CRUZE was having performance issues. I didn't even realize I had a low boost situation until I installed my new wastegate on the engine. Right away on the first drive I gained roughly 5 lbs of boost.

The reason the cruze was cracking pistons was due to a lot of different factors, one being that people were not changing their oil on time causing carbon soaked oil to make it's way past the piston rings causing pre detonation due to the fact that these engines are direct injected and the cylinder air temp when compressed gets very hot. Another factor is if you are running 87 it's a big no no for these engines, they run a decent compression couple with high cylinder pressure from boost causing pre ignition often especially when pressing the gas to pass someone at lower than 1500 rpm. Another factor is people just not knowing how to drive their car, I have a BNR tune and run as much as 21 lbs of boost on and off and have had no issues of cracked pistons. Changing your oil when the oil life says 40 percent is a good rule of thumb to keep high amounts of carbon out of the oil, also run 93 octane, God only knows why Chevy told people to run 87 is beyond me. Yes these engines do have cast pistons unfortunately and they are a weak point, the rods are actually pretty stout and the crank could probably handle 400 hp all day. Best thing follow the 93 octane, oil change around 40 percent life and down shift when passing don't step on the gas hard at low rpm rule.

I'm here for all of them. Cobra, Vette, Goat - even Dubbya. Great info and explanations. Regarding direction - I don't know. I''ll be here regardless. Id be interested even if you just posted as you tackled them. One of the items I struggle with is switching between projects. So I may have a dubbya that I'm putting a CAI on, but am waiting for the isolator so I replace the tranny cooler on the Expedition. But it is seldom that straightforward because all of that has to happen after work. Again, one of the items I appreciate most is you don't edit out the "screw ups" or mis-steps. It gets frustrating when projects don't go exactly to plan - then you find out EVERY person that tackled what I did had issues at the same place, but it was edited out. Like your tip to hold the wastegate case while opening. Thanks again!

@@davesworld2132 I added a magnaflow cat back, which I thought was a bit loud for my taste. Specifically drone in the 2700-3000RPM range.
Added 10lbs of dynamat with some improvement, ended up packing my down sleeping bag for emergencies around spare tire and the drone is almost entirely gone. My guess the crumple zone of car body was resonating more so then the exhaust being the issue.
I didn't address the battery box, though this too is made of some very thin metal with the exhaust flowing right underneath. It's kinda shocking how quiet the cruze is with so little sound insulation in the back from factory.
Edit: I should have added, the intake and exhaust both seem to free up the engine in the 4000-6000RPM range. Stock its seemed restricted.

@@davesworld2132 I did think of something else... I previously had a 12 cruze and 15 sonic, both would run(average) 5F above ambient intake air temps at hwy speed.
My 2018 cruze even with the GM performance intake and its second air inlet averages around 12F above ambient in similar conditions.
If you remove the plastic cover over radiator(like 3 push clips) you can see the main air inlet lays ontop intercooler, always heating the intake air.
I removed this intake pipe and modified, shortened it(needed to glue it back together), so now my car sucks air at least partially from the gap in hood. I now see 5F average above ambient at hwy speeds like my previous cars.
Ideally the intake air should not be routed near the radiator at all. If you remove the airbox, there is a great opening directly below it, sucking from in front of the tire liner. I'll probably eventually make an intake that utilizes this opening.

Well if you use the mamba that I have in the video and it adjusted the same way you should be OK and if it’s adjusted incorrectly you’ll probably get a check engine light before something will blow up. Again I have to advise don’t do that unless you feel confident. They do sell a replacement wastegate I’ve seen on other auto parts websites that is a direct replacement but then you run into an issue where overtime it will get weak again. Which is why I made this video you can see there was a big difference before and after and it shows how weak the factory one was. By the way they sell some pretty cheap code readers that also have live data that you can read your boost with. You don’t necessarily need to have a gauge however I do have a cheap gauge in my car and here’s a video to show you how to do it.
