- It's Compilation Thursday. It's time for ortho, definitely a top 3 character for me. He wears a surgical cap that was sent to me by a "women in orthopedic surgery" group in Europe. It's one of my favorite props.
00:01 How to Consult Ortho - It's a beautiful thing when two physicians can communicate effectively using as few words as possible. EM and Ortho know each other incredibly well, both in real life and in the Glaucomflecken Cinematic Universe. This is the only video featuring a different costume for ortho. The reason is because I temporarily misplaced the lilac "women in ortho" surgical cap he usually wears, so I went with the only trucker hat I own. I think it works. Femur.
00:42 Ortho Rounds - Full disclosure, I have never participated in ortho rounds and I'm not totally sure they actually exist. If they do exist, it must look something like this. Brevity is the soul of wit and also the way ortho bros talk to one another. I think what makes ortho a fun character is that not only is he a bro, but you can tell he's brilliant. It's each to portray him as a dumb jock, but in reality orthopedic surgeons are incredibly smart. I like to throw in little nuggets that give the audience insight into his intelligence, whether it's dropping bone knowledge or knowing how to manipulate other physicians into doing what he wants. Also, do ortho bros reward each other with exercise? I don't know, probably.
03:09 Ortho goes to Therapy - This is definitely one of my favorite therapy sessions. I try to give each character a little emotional range so they don't seem one dimensional. This helps keep the content fresh. Ortho starts out reticent (gross, yoga...) becomes vulnerable (medicine doctors always making fun of him) and ends with that unbridled confidence we all love about him. To all the non-medical people watching, don't worry, under no circumstances will an orthopedic surgeon attempt to manage your diabetes. Thanks, feelings bro.
05:15 Ortho Visits a Trampoline Park - I'm afraid to admit this, but I took my kid to a trampoline park for her friend's birthday party. Thankfully, the place was monitored by a cadre of 16 year olds, so nobody got hurt. I had 2 hours to kill, so I made this video. I got a few puzzled looks from people who were probably wondering why an adult wearing a surgical scrub cap was talking to himself on a Saturday afternoon at a trampoline park, but sometimes you have to accept a bit of embarrassment for the sake of content creation.
The part about "micromanaging barely abnormal lab values" will never ever get old (or irrelevant).

Seven weeks ago, I broke my femur after tangling with a vacuum cleaner hose. Had to get surgery to fix it. When the ortho residents came in to change my dressings, I said, “What up ortho bros!” They laughed! Love this compilation!

And on a serious note, the contrast in Ortho's face when he is talking about bones (confidence) and when others are talking to him about other medicine stuff is awesome! Dr. G could seriously have been treating our eyes to a show (as an actor) if he weren't an Ophthalmologist asking us to show our eyes to him to treat them.

@@deepwater3646emtAccording to the GCU, there is proven to be more than one Jonathan in “How to Ace Your Ophthalmology Residency Interview”, and they are planning a revolution against the humans.
I interviewed to be an ortho Jonathan. It was the best office environment I’ve ever been in and refreshing after coming from the ER. Orthos are the nicest people. Everyone’s happy and every patient comes out smiling because there’s an easy fix to their problems.

@@sammiller6631 Too much stress. Awful hours. Dozens of patients to chart with no time to do it and doctors are too busy doing other stuff to answer your questions to fill out the rest of the chart. Doing all that while sleep deprived (night shift just isn’t for me) and then getting accused of getting snippy when I actually STOPPED myself from getting snippy, but apparently just the act of sounding exhausted is bad, and I just couldn’t do it anymore. Never got out of probation. Which is good because the commute was awful anyway. They also weren’t exactly helpful with trying to learn the ropes either. They also had a bad habit of not telling you when they’re getting up and going to the next room so I was stuck scrambling with a COW and running down the hall. Oh, and apparently politely asking the doc to repeat what he said because there’s a child playing a video at the highest volume is considered “unprofessional,” even though I can’t exactly do my job if I can’t hear what the patient and doctor are fucking saying!
3/10, would not recommend.
As an anaesthesiologist working in the ICU of an orthopedic hospital, I love and hate them simultaneously with a passion.
Why would an Ortho hospital need/want an ICU?

I've had innumerable orthopedic surgeries and I can totally attest to the fact that ortho bros only see people as a walking skeleton.
My PCP had to put the brakes on several surgeries just because my other "irrelevant systems" weren't up to par for the stress. Lol
But they are lovable, mostly optimistic, doctors!

@@jeanjaz yeah, when I was on my ICU rotation we cancelled a couple of ortho surgeries too. Unfortunately there was 1 man (not in the ICU) who died bc his labs were all off and otho abandoned him in hospital for 2 weeks and then operated on him with without looking at the labs they ordered themselves

My ortho was the buffest doctor I'd ever had. After my leg brace came off, he asked me to resist him pushing my leg. I don't think I could have even with my good leg.

Love your vids, im currently at my 3rd year of Ortho Residency, your ortho skits made me realize i wasn't really fully committed to the "Ortho Characterization" so i've decided to start hitting the gym since the beginning of this year so i can finally achieve the vision of what truly is to be a real Ortho bro and obtain a bigger bicep, tricep and deltoid strenght, after 6 months now those intramedullary nails are easier to do, now all my fellow Ortho bros are hitting the gym too so we can crush it together and look swole during morning rounds. Keep it real bro!

It's a toss up between Ortho and Pathology for "most positive, feel-good character in the Glaucomfleckenverse". I'm happy any time I see either one.
Ortho is such a himbo and yet also very intelligent in a few ways other than bone-knowing. He is smarter than a lot of the other doctors when it comes to emotional and interpersonal intelligence. And he deserves more credit for those things

I laughed really hard when he mentioned the growth plate maturing naturally. I broke the growth plate in my left ankle when I was five and it still gives me trouble 37 years later 😂😂😂

“I get 20% of my patients from here” is no joke. When I broke my wrist a few years ago, the ortho nurse asked me what happened and when I said I broke it at a specific roller skating place in town she just goes “oof yeah. They’re great for our business.”

I’m watching this the morning of orthopedic surgery on my arm, and it’s actually super comforting. No need to be scared of the bone doctors, they’re just jocks who made it through med school.
I always laugh when Ancef is brought up. I had knee surgery back in December, looked up at the IV stand, and, sure enough, Ancef was part of the cocktail of drugs I received.
I'm so jealous of this depiction of ortho...in my country they are meaner than general surgeons and overwork their residents even more.

My brother is an orthopedic trauma surgeon. His hospital has advertising pictures of him posted in scrubs, flexing his sizeable biceps. He has turned his garage into his own private gym. The orthopedic surgeon who inspired him to pursue ortho is a kitesurfing friend of mine with a ponytail who has his own practice. He gave my brother an xray of a hand flipping the bird when my brother shadowed him (they made the xray together.) This video cracks me up. Oh...and he used to be a bike bro until he had a little tumble and realized he was risking breaking bones with that activity so he took up swimming. 😅 ...he also does yoga and prefers for people outside the hospital to not know what he does for a living because he feels like they treat him differently...like he's not a just regular dude❤ funny...the one bone i ever broke was a growth plate as a kid while jumping on a trampoline.
This was so inspiring to the point that feelings bro got me convinced that i could manage diabetes as well despite being a lab tech. I can do anything now! Thank you feelings bro :)

I can top that. My son used to be seen by a joint clinic with Pediatric Neurosurgery and Pediatric Neurooncology. It was usually about a 20 minute visit. They both billed our insurance $550/hour. BOTH. (Don't get me wrong, the two doctors were amazing, but that's a lot of money!)

I told this story once and I'll tell it again. Had to float to an ortho floor once. A patient suddenly had higher than usual blood pressures. Obliviously I paged the ortho provider. Ortho calls: "well what did you do before taking that blood pressure?" I said nothing. Othro responds: "well does this patient have a medicine consult?" I looked up the patients chart and said yes. Othro responds: "great page them and see what they say." *hangs up phone.*

I feel hella called out.
I wound up putting a sprinkler under a trampoline the summer after my 6th grade year and broke my leg hella bad slipping and double jumping at the same time. Right leg had my growth plate cracked through and the fibula looked bowed out so bad it was just this side of actively snapping outward. I was in a full leg cast for over a month and I'm still messed up from it- (I'm 30 now). No PT or nothing afterward to re-teach me how to walk properly either, did that shit on my own during music camp. Also, pro tip, never try crutches in the sand.
