Such a beautiful guitar. Explorers are THE guitars imo. Even with the crack that thing deserves to be cherished. I wish I could buy it. Lot of those numbers (serial, pickup dates, etc) match some significance in my life, lol. Still a 10 pounder is PERFECT weight for a bigger guy. When you have a heavier guitar (without neck dive) you just know your holding something amazing. Thanks for sharing.

I bought an E2 Explorer brand new in 1982 that is curly maple top in tobacco burst. Gigged with it all through the 80s. Great guitar. it's been sitting in it's case for around 30 years now. It's definitely seen better days since I didn't baby it at all on the road., and at the time I installed a Kahler trem on it and dimarzio in the bridge pickup. The thing is a TANK! that one you bought is in killer condition. looks almost brand new.

Really love my EX2 CMT Tobacco Sunburst I bought new in late 81', I think! But I did have to replace those horrible low profile frets from the factory. Put jumbo frets on it and it has never played so good! Bendy leads are easy peasy!! I also replaced the tunable stop bar with a regular stop bar for better stability. Dirty finger pickups make this guitar sound So good for rock! I will never swap them out unless they lose their magnetism - but no sign of that happening so far. The only thing I've always not liked about it is how high the neck comes up from the top of the body. Makes for a very thick and chunky feeling neck heel. I like guitars where only the fretboard comes up over the body. Nice low neck profile like that makes playing up in the higher registers easier in my opinion. My new white Gibson '70s Explorer I have is like this and I do like it better for playability sake. But I still play that old CMT very often for the great tone. You could say it was my first true love!

I mean, im a punk with a mad habit of pounding on my guitar, so on my stop bar guitars, I'll install a TP6 and a locking nut. It helps playability, and im used to the way they feel. Plus, they look killer and always get questions and puzzled looks :)
Edit: I'd like to add, if I ever get a signature, it's soooo getting my goofy pickup choice and a TP-6/Lock-nut combo.
Greetings and well wishes from Utah!

  • @alexanderguestguitars1173

From a constructional point of view, I wouldn't worry about that crack on the back. It follows the grain of the wood, so it looks to me like a little crack in the wood which was there before the guitar was made, and nobody noticed it, because it was so small. Then after all these years it's opened up a little bit. I suppose it will affect the value of it a bit, but I'll bet it's nothing serious, like a glue seam coming apart. Other thing is, there's nothing wrong with veneers! There's no point using a thick slab of figured wood, if you will only ever see the front of it. And veneer is real timber as well. There's nothing fake about it.

As the previous person suggested you might want to google search or whatever search engine you use. It will likely give you a more in depth idea of the types of woods . Just in Cypress alone I know of five different types. Oak, maple, pine and ash have plenty also. That's not going into the woods that typically are are associated with bearing trees.

They were originally released as 'The Explorer' and 'The Vee' and I have both from 1981. I got the Explorer brand new as one of only 2 direct imports into the UK at the time. I was actually looking for an E2 at the time when my 'The Explorer' popped up out of the blue as a new option. I have a mahogany 81 E/2 I bought new. It produces the best rhythm guitar tracks. I've not found anything that compares to it. It does come at a price though: weight. It's a beast.

Trogly, I know that you claim to be about tone first and foremost, as opposed to being a player's player. I think you definitely make an exception and shine as a guitarist in instances like this one.

I sent you a message on the new Lizzie Hale hybrid explorer / firebird model that Gibson has on their table soon. I personally never loked the explorer although I think the body is an open pallet for some great art work. I just think it's way to big and after having played one the size is what turns me off about them.not necessarily the make up of the neck or pickup layout. Although the big tale does remind me of cars from a few years before my time which I love. I find the tail is just to much. Likely why I prefer the Firebird. Is the Explorer a neck through model as is the Firebird and Thunderbird or is it a set neck. When I was a teen in the mid 70s my oldest brother returned from the air force. With him he brought an Electra brand Les Paul. If I had to guess I'd say it was a traditional or something similar. That beast weighed every bit of 10 lbs. He allowed me to play it when he wasn't. If it wasnt for that wide leather Gibson style strap I probably couldn't have played more than 20 minutes or so. Taking it off your shoulders you could feel a great relief from the weight of that guitar.

That must be a CMT explorer. Not pancake built like e2. E2 is not bound. E2 had brass nut also. Dirty fingers , e2 truss rod cover , maple , walnut , maple , or , walnut , maple , walnut. E2 has the bevels. They also painted some models. I’ve seen red and black. That is the correct bridge and tailpiece however. I’m not a Gibson expert , but my great friend Tyler Bates has the walnut , maple , walnut one he had from high school which I have played and fell in love with that guitar so I’ve paid particular attention to these. But I would say you have a CMT if there is such a line.

Great guitar! Almost forgot how good Explorers sound on high gain... Actually, what would one little crack like that do to the playability of the guitar? Might hurt the value but if it won't enlarge over time eventually splitting the body in two, it's a non-issue for me🤷🏼‍♂

Isnt the E2 something like 7/8th the size of a regular Explorer? Or slightly smaller like an Explorer Pro? Looks like it.

Hey Trogly cool video! I actually own a 1983 Gibson Explorer which shares many of the same specs as the Explorer you demo in this video such as the Dirty Fingers humbuckers(plus!!) and that god awful bridge which I changed out for a stock Nashville Gibson bridge(👍🏻👍🏻). Mines that “white” color which is actually piss white because those drunken bastards didn’t give a rats ass in terms of maintaining this color. Sad! It is what it is. Sounds great from the years it has existed. No abuse to it whatsoever.
