A rare thing nowadays. I rode in the cab of a DMU as a 7 year old between New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly. The driver taught me everything regarding safety systems signalling and signal aspects. 53 years ago but remember well

Must have been an amazing experience. I managed to have something similar arrenged during my school years when we were having a "workplace experience" week. I got to go along with different railway staff each day. One day with a driver, the next one with a guard, then a day in the signal box etc. Amazing experience. 15 years later and I've now been on the railway since 2015.

    What a fantastic experience.
When I did my 2 week Year 10 work experience back in 2011, I was lucky to be allowed to do it as a guard on the Swanage Railway. On my first morning there I was told to jump aboard a moving (3mph) train as it went through the carriage wash. I got to ride on the footplate (steam loco) and sit in the cab of a DMU on the full length of the line both ways, as well as operating the ground frame to run the train around.
I was told how I was very lucky to be allowed to do that for my work experience, would not be allowed now.
