  • GUEST: Julia Davis - Russian Media Monitor analyst, Columnist, writer and Investigative journalist.
    ----------
The Putin regime has been widely exploiting the vulnerabilities of global social media platforms, using bots and trolls to promote specific stories and narratives. But Russian propaganda does not work how most people think it does. The interventions of the trolls and agitators often fail to directly promote pro-regime narratives in political discussions but do succeed in distracting people from having open discussions that are critical of the state. Welcome to the counter-intuitive world of Russian disinformation operations, populated by a rogue’s gallery of toxic yet highly effective propagandists.
    ----------
    SPEAKER:
Julia Davis is a Columnist at The Daily Beast and internationally known Writer and Investigative Journalist. She is also a Washington Post Contributor, National Security & Foreign Policy Reporter, and Analyst with Russian Media Monitor. Julia Davis has a broad background as a National Security, Counterterrorism, and Immigration Expert. She is a former federal officer, having served with the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection. She writes as an Investigative Reporter, exposing Russian propaganda, discussing foreign policy, international and domestic affairs, and other issues. Julia’s reports have been featured by CNN, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Business Insider, Newsweek, The Hill, and multiple other media outlets.

I remember the pro-Western Ukrainians being labelled as Nazis during the Maidan revolution in early 2014. This narrative goes back to Stefan Bandera, the Ukrainian nationalist who emerged during the Holodomyr. He sided with Nazi Germany in WW2. Russian propagandists don’t understand that Bandera’s alliance didn’t mean that he was a Nazi. Rather, he preferred the Germans to the Russians. The Finns, Estonians, Romanians etc also preferred Germany to Russia. Apparently people who have been embraced by mother Russia really want to be orphans.

Julia Davis is a Ukrainian-born American journalist and media analyst. Until 2014, her primary focus was on filmmaking, investigative reporting about crimes, government, corruption and civil rights. When Putin invaded Ukraine, was dismayed to discover the lack of reporting on that topic in the U.S., which meant that a lot of news coverage was coming through the Russian English-speaking channel, RT, right here in the United States. RT previously claimed to be an alternative media outlet that reported about fringe politics, global issues and government corruption, but everything changed after Russia annexed the Crimea. In one of her interviews, [RT’s editor-in-chief Margarita] Simonyan admitted that RT was created as an instrument to be used by the Kremlin for its info-wars against the West.... She explained that it would be too late to start making weapons once the war has already started. Thus, RT was apparently crafted in advance and was masquerading as a legitimate media outlet, to be used as needed.... This became very apparent in 2014. In short order, the Kremlin’s bullhorn was weaponized, spewing out blatant propaganda and outright fakes.
Julia Davis is best known for founding Russian Media Monitor project monitoring Russian state television, including its international outlets such as RT (formerly Russia Today). She has been described as the "foremost U.S. expert on Russian government-controlled television and propaganda".She has also been described as a "Russian TV whisperer for American ears".Regarding her founding of the Russian Media Monitor, she has stated that "it felt like a very natural thing that, when the U.S. is under such an attack from that part of the world, that with the unique experiences and skills I have, and the language, that I jump in and try to do something about it." Yeah, russians still struggle with understanding that it is not politics any more, it is about one’s values. And they choose to stick with infantile “what can I do, nothing depends on me…” in the best case scenario. Or they cling with the devil they know whose stance is “might is right”. Also, the fear “the west just wants to break and swallow us” is super pervasive among the population.

I used to listen to RT in the UK because it was written by someone who knew the fault lines in British politics. I admired it as a piece of creative writing. The key words are 'interpret' and 'evaluate'. Interpreting the output and then evaluating what the content was designed to evoke : doubts, fears, ambiguities, contradictions. I read China Daily for the same reason - Chinese propaganda is more subtle and it reveals the hidden agenda of the CCP. Sometimes they make a mistake and reveal true intentions.

I have to admire the ability to view this all clinically. I'm not Ukrainian either, but I AM in Ukraine (to volunteer) and it's extremely difficult to take that step back logically and realize what the overall goal is here, rather than the emotional knee jerk reaction of anger, disgust, and horror. I do think that we do need to see it all from that emotional point of view as well because our humanity HAS to prevail, but becoming too immersed in those emotions can also defeat one's ability to combat this horror show. It's difficult but not impossible, we just have to keep our eyes on the small things, even the smallest acts of kindness and humanity is a drop in the bucket against the pure evil on display. Immersion in those small acts keeps me going. Keep up the amazing work, keep pushing the truth! We all need to adjust our thinking and realize what propaganda has done to us collectively, and what our overall apathy has allowed russia to get away with.

Not only a reporter & analyst, but also an aviation & spacecraft engineer, a stunt performer, TV & film producer & director. Also relevant is that she is a Ukrainian born in Kyiv, & speaks many languages.
As a "federal officer" she was (falsely) declared a terrorist for correctly reporting an 'inconvenient' security problem at the Mexican border in 2004. The US government started 54 investigations against her (all eventually dropped) & sent a Black Hawk helicopter & 27 marines to arrest or assassinate her at home (she was out), an attack from which her father died, as a result of mishandling & heart failure. The sudden unexplained deaths of 4 young witnesses also followed. Look for an interview with her published by Morph314 on 20 June 2013. "Reality is not about right & left: it's about right & wrong." A true heroine.

Still ongoing in 2013 after nine years, such persecution would have destroyed a normal person. I'd be curious to hear from her why she prefers not to mention it on her webpage 'About Julia Davis'.
