PLEASE NOTE: Record as a product is discontinued but all of it's features are included in Reason 6 and above. Anything showed using Record can be used in Reason 6 and above.
When it comes to mastering, one of the hottest things right now is a technique known as "mid-side processing." As a basic description, mid-side processing uses phase cancellation tricks to isolate the mono information in a mix (bass, vocal, kick drum) from the stereo items (guitars, keys, effects) and then lets you master them separately and recombine them for a very nice sounding master.
This week I brought in two special guests to help me design a mid-side mastering patch for you as well as to help describe the technical intricacies of how this is done. Be sure to visit the links in this video, download the patches, and visit the websites I mention.

Nothing but Praise to ALL of you at, and working with propellerhead. Blessings.
I don't know but now I feel compelled to answer back on this one!!! :)
Love, love, love, these "classes" !!!!! It is one of the many things that puts Reason on top of all others.
Wow good stuff. James I just want to say how much I personally appreciate these weekly tip. I hope you will consider continuing another years worth of tips for 2011. Again many thanks.
i started getting lost directly after peff said, "It's pretty simple"
thanks for posting, just when I thought I knew the program inside and out I realize how little I actually know.
Back to the drawing boards.
By the way, I saw the posting on your wife, James. Can't imagine what you've been through in these past few weeks but, again, thanks for the tuts!
I've used this for every single track I've done ever since this video came out, it's a wonderful technique, thanks very much!
This patch is amazing. Definitely throwing a huge help to reason + record users.
Propellerheads always has the best community.
Finally I found this video! I saw it for the first time when it was uploaded 2 years ago, but I lost it into the wilds of internet. And naturally it's been bugging me for a long time... until now.
Definitely going to try this myself.
Thanks Propellerheads not only for an amazing software but lessons like this.
@KidWuzi Exactly. This is one of those wonderful things that you don't have to understand exactly WHY it works to appreciate the fact that it DOES work. And boy does it work! Speaking with James yesterday he told me "Going forward, this is something I honestly don't see myself finishing a track without."
I stumbled onto the mid side mastering patches pretty much by accident. I haven't gone back! It's that extra little bit that I've been looking for to make those mixes sound so wide and well defined. I like how it seems to give so much more clarity.
The vari-mu was actually quite insightful. Thank you for sharing.
Many thanks for your work! From Russia with love))
Well Hello, I've been watching from week 1 to now. Very helpful all the video's but this one is priceless. Thank you so much!
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I Just downloaded the patch and was getting lazy on trying it right away but I did and I am blown away!! Thank YOU so much im crying too
My. God. This adds SO much depth to the mix! I'm so impressed... still a little confused on the nomenclature, but in any case, I will for sure be getting this patch and tweaking some settings.
I love the collaboration and I'm extremely jealous of your Christmas party in Sweden!
God Jul mina vänner! :-)
You said it! we definitely need a spectrum analyzer. Without it It's like driving without headlights at night.
This was really usefull, i have a full featured pro tools rig, and i mix liek crazy in that, but when it comes to master, I really just prefer the reason/record sound so much better. you guys make amazing patches and it's very use friendly. this has helped me so much
@CharlesSterntorp - In most music genres, the Kick and the Bass are the foundation of the track - they are placed in the center so that both your L & R speakers (or headphones even) emit the frequency with the same "power". This combined power gives more... "Hmmph" if you will. This doesn't mean that there shouldn't be any hint of stereo presence for those instruments, you still have freedom to add stereo effects on those instruments, but keep the lows end intact / mono if you can.
I miss James in tutorials...
JAmes thank you for this invaluable info: even though I cannot comprehend it, I can hear it. Thank you for the patches,.keep the videos coming even when your done with the 52 Reason tips.
@Smusbasti Well, if you've had any experience working with complicated CV in the combinator, you would have to route certain things through the rotaries and map the rotaries to certain parameters in the programmer to get certain effects. Now with dedicated CV inputs you have more flexibility with the amount of CV routing you can do.
I am not entirely sure if that was subconscious but I'm crying too right now ;)
GOOD JOB PEFF & SELIG.
All new depth can be applied and that does sound good.
After that tip, i can't feel my face... getting serious. And that's real gold, sounds very pro. Thanks Bernard
My goodness! This makes everything sound better. Like, whoa!
THANK YOU!!!!!!
WHOA!!! ok.. I have to ask.. who sits around and comes up with this stuff!!??? Amazing stuff by the way!!!
Wow, that sounds really really great. Thanks a lot!
Valuable and very usefull, more than a stereo spacializer, especialy the invert phase EQ trick ^^ i must try this with 2 or 3 entire songs tracks mixing at the end of each other, before doing a CD test.
got these patches too dude! ...guess I must first get the latest Reason to test these ones... nice one anyway!
@AMBASSSIDOR to be fair you can't have even bothered looking in that case. There's a whole world of effects and patches for vocals that are standard when you but Reason/Record let alone the countless innovations that you can make off your own back,
Thanks so much for sharing this with me I've been fooling around with reason 5 years and I never took time to listen or watch lessons on CZcams but watching you explain this gives me understanding the purpose but what part do you start your song formation I can't seem to figure out how to start the song formation and my sounds change like the module wheel resets and I have to adjust it Everytime I stop the song how do I save the settings in song form
I met peff in Chicago Hes awesome... like reason mad scientist... XD
Totally baffled by the creation of a vari-µ in Reason. SO geeked out right now!
I think my favorite feature in Reason 5 is the Combi CV inputs. So many more things are now possible.
ive watched so many of these videos i feel like this guy is my homeboy now lolll... yet another amazing video...
Awesome info man
this is sick. props to props!
Fantastic. I actually learned something new!
It worked really well on the first and only track I tried it on. I'm assuming one needs to re-eq all the tracks on the board before applying the peff combinator, get it sounding good and them apply the settings as directed in the tutorial? Mine sounded really empty on the side EQ. Some engineers recommend beginning with the master comp on and mixing into it. The Compressor on Peff's set up is off, why?
For everyone looking for a spectrum analyzer, here's a good link.
Search:
"Reason 5 Spectrum Analyzer Part 1: How it Works/to build it "
in CZcams.
Sorry.. . tryed to upload it as a link but didn't work due to my lack of skill
@Remit007 Yeah but the beauty of this patch is that you can just download it and use it... not worry about the wiring... and rejoice in the goodness it brings to your music. Kurt and Giles operate on a genius level that us mere mortals can't understand. Fortunately they give us their genius toys to play with! :)
You all prolly dont care at all but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot my account password. I love any assistance you can offer me
@Ian Mekhi Instablaster :)
@Aries Sterling i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Aries Sterling it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much, you really help me out :D
@Ian Mekhi No problem :)
Oh my god that sounds amazing, probably way too ahead of my knowledge at the moment though. But damn, I'll give it a try some other day haha
James, this might be a real newbie thing to ask, but do you think you might talk about bussing with Reason/Record - how best to set it up, tips and advice etc...
brilliant! Thanks Peff
Straight Gold!!!!!!!!
Thank you Thank you and again Thank you!
can someone show me how the free rack extension RE 181 mid side audio converter work and how to make the connections
That Kirk dude is a freakin genious. Cheers
I noticed that aswell. I'll just trust that it's for a reason, but i wonder what it is. I'll have to spend some time on that logic puzzle. lol
the difference sounds really good....
i miss these days :'(
This song is beautiful...where can I get it?
what vocal effects does reason record offer??? i mean does it even have delay. i cant find one tutorial on the vocal effects. do a tutorial on that propellerhead & i will gladly make my purchase. : )
What about the attack and release? Should they be left alone?
brilliant... what's this genre classed as ??
I didn't even know Thor was capable of such things. Blown away.
@AMBASSSIDOR reason prob not for vocal. record uses audio so look at that. loads of youtube tut's on how to use the basics of record. Very versatile and easy to use. Frees you up by spending less time having to get the sound into the computer and more time spent making the sound or improving it if you know what i mean
great tip number 41
hey would this work with drumandbass music. which is wat i do. something in my matering just doesnt sound right, anyadvive would be great. thanks
@ElectrizCity for example? im a novice when it comes to handling cv.
Curt and James, You are Dope !!!!!!!!
@kaldor89 ive already looked bruh. couldnt find anything but just in case i may have looked over it could you please send me the link of where they speak of vocal effects and im not talking about using neptune and changing pitch and adding other racks im talking about dropping effects in like delay. im crossed between sonar or reason right now 2 use 4 my vocals. futhermore who looks at FAQ? what is this yr 1995. youtube is my FAQ........... lol
@selulancie
Just an FYI... it's Kurt not Kirk.
2:40 and 3:56 -- HOW should one know that the "Amount" is actually PHASE SHIFT? I get that neg values is a clue, but I would never in a million years assume that "Amount" here is shifting the phase. Now I'm scared that other "amount" knobs elsewhere in Reason are shifting phase and I don't know it.....
@pontiusplues I found it that good I needed extensive therapy followed by counselling.
@PropellerheadSW but can u please help me route the patch.I have been using reason since 2003 and use reason 5 but cant understand anything in this video!!!Please make it simpler
Did Propellerhead save all of these patches anywhere? These links don't work any longer.
Hey James...What if I am using Reason 3 can this still work?
I cannot help but wonder.. Why 76 out from Thor number two?
i dont get it! im using only reason, were do i have to put my song to apply the patches on?
@habenod
What's a werdo?
Best trick ever
oh my god, thank you so much..
Ok I understand that L + R = Mid and L - R = Side...therefore Mid + Side = L and Mid - Side = R...and to some degree i get the values of 100 that was used in the first thor, but why was 76 used in the second thor??
@AMBASSSIDOR They won't make a tutorial just because you can't use google or search the propellerhead software homepage for FAQ.
my mind blown and i still don't know what have been cancelled and what happened when you combined the signal twice... what happen to the frequency ??? i really wanna know it
Phase inversion causes the waves to destructively interfere. It's like how (+1) + (-1) = 0 ; There are slight difference between left and right so it's not exactly 1 + (-1), it's more like (1.1) + (-1), you're left with a little bit extra. That's the isolated stereo image. Then, you can take that little bit extra, subtract THAT back out of the main mix, and now you have everything else BESIDES the "little extra." Now you can process each piece independently.
Thanks for the tips / advice and files. I have a question. I am using Reason 9.2, when applying this Master Mid-Side Process, would you recommend switching the Master Compressor on or leave it off? Thanks for any advice...
You can leave it on. The master bus compressor is not a mastering computer, but rather a compressor on the master bus. And if that sounds confusing, it is! I wish audio engineers back in the day used clearer terms. But what you need to know is that the master bus compressor is not used as part of your mastering process. It's actually something more commonly considered a mixing stage process. Mix engineers would mix into the master bus compressor on the big studio consoles this one is modeled after and it would THEN be sent to the mastering engineers for mastering work to be done. So leaving the master bus on is just fine. That's the simple answer. :) /ryan
Ok Ryan, thank you for your simple answer 😉 Did you throw the word computer in there to make it more simple 🤔😂
WOW!
sweet
hey io saw ur coment and the video you linked is really helpful, although i ended up not using that analzyer cause it didnt tell me everything i needed to know.
Instead i used this one /watch?v=tHR66806sNY
With that one you can isolate certain frequencies and add bass trebles to each, kinda like an equalizer, stereo imager and spectrum analyzer all in one. i use it everytime i make a song ^.^
Brilliant, how many companies regularly answer back to youtube comments : )
***Nice***
Man, peff's voice sounds like talking dubstep without the wubwub!
Dead link?? =(
This video just revelutionalized my mixing!!! I love it!!! Thank you for revealing the magic tricks friends!
MYCOMONSTER
It's like there speaking a different language "must learn, auto replay "
I'm probably being a numbskull, but I can't get Record to recognize the patches... What am I doing wrong?
DAAAAEEUUMMNN
Its possible to make one using vocoders but a rack extension would be ace.
MYCOMONSTER
Would it help if we wrote a letter to them on your behalf? "Dear Assholes, please pay up so Ardotadot can get his creative flow going.
Sincerely, Propellerhead Software" :)
haha, thanks : )
In my opinion God doesn't exist but if he did then I would hope that he/it/they would bless you James and Kurt cos this is ay may zing
awwwwwwww bum, dead link now
Keep that hair short like that james you look like a werdo withit!!!!!!
