Tony Northrup reviews the ultimate video camera under $2,000: The Sony FX30. It has 4k at 60FPS (full-width), cropped 4k @ 120FPS or FHD @ 240fps. It has digital audio inputs and an available XLR microphone grip. It's the perfect camera for filmmakers, CZcamsrs, TikTokers, or anyone who needs to make high-quality video with a budget under $3k.
Tony also compares it to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, because so many creators are currently using their smartphone and looking for an upgrade.

I respect Sony for releasing products with their best tech at good prices. Not worried about not putting certain specs just to avoid “competing with their older models”
Agreed. I've shot canon for 10 years and I'm honestly pretty annoyed with their intentional crippling of models. I'll be revisiting my gear in a couple of years, but may well switch to Sony if canon doesn't change their business practices.
@@karikaru Same here. Currently own a C70 and R5. It is very clear the C70 could have been even better, just as good, or better as the C300mkii. And the R5 as well considering the models that came out quickly after had improvements that for sure could have been on the r5 as well.
Meanwhile, when Sony released the Fx6, owners of the fx9 argued since the fx6 was better. And Sony simply said it was more modern with newer technology. I respect that. Plus, gives users the option to upgrade to a smaller camera that is even better than their bigger older model.
The best thing about Sony cameras are that they are not selective which tech is available at what price. It didn't take long before Sony introduced their amazing Eye AF tech to ALL of their later cameras after their debut with a single model. Their latest models are simply improvements over the older ones.
Sadly the colors and the dynamics range on the FX30 are horrible. Canon has nothing to worry about.
This time it seems this way and this camera looks awesome. But I still think they do the exact opposite with some of their other products, many of which I have owned. Let's just be grateful this time.
Great job on the balanced review/comparison, Tony. I found my FX3 has that focus issue with some of those backlit situations. Great job!
Bravo! Those voiceovers during the editing are a great way to entertain while reducing the time you would use to shoot everything again... keep this format Tony it works very well!
Agree.
"Yes everyone's seen a candle ffs"...I lost it!🤣
I love Sony, I´m a film student and wanted an FX6 but ended up getting the FX3 after being on a waitlist for over a year.
I fell in love with Sony after using the FS5 in film school and watching a lot of reviews to see what camera to buy.
The FX3 is such a great camera, maybe I´ll even consider buying the FX30 as a B-Camera in the future or even an FX6 and turn my FX3 into the B.
Sony´s have such great image quality (even directly out of camera like S-Cinetone), audio, autofocus, features and lenses.
Always have had some of the best reviews in the game. Thanks to the Northrup channel!
Very helpful!
Hard to beat seeing real-world samples like that. Nice job.
Tony, I loved the video and your voice over on the more habitual but necessary phrases you use. Really on point and really enjoyable. Thanks again!
Tony VS VO Tony is my new fav thing I didn't know I needed
Really enjoying this new narrative you are working. Hope it gets the channel back to getting viewers. Good luck and hang in there.
Great review Tony. I loved how you interrupted yourself in a humorous way. I’d love to more of that in the future.
Great video Tony, really nice production and style of cuts in this one 🙂.
I'm very impressed by sony's offer here with the new lenses and FX30 body. They are definitly going after M4/3 users with a well built and well priced camera and compact lenses that are very practical (unlike what panasonic did with its huge and expensive 1.7 zooms).
The GH6 still has some tricks up its sleeve, but the sales will take a big hit for sure !
ps : for people filming themself, the GH6 has a focus limiter fonction that is very quick to setup and makes it perfect (good tracking, no hunting to the background)
For me as a gh5 user the sony is no option. The gh6 has so much the sony has not and what i dont want to lose. Gh cameras are just more professional to use and of course gh cameras have open gate i use all the time with my social Media stuff
@@castielvargastv7931 how do you find low-light situations?
I currently rock a6300 and it’s really not a great camera for low-light situations- want to grab the Panasonic but afraid the m4:3 will be a step down in regards to handling low light compare to a Full Frame
@@mylescharron3746not much difference between apsc and mft in terms of size. What is different is the technology of the sensor depending on the camera. Sony typically uses stacked sensors, not sure what the gh6 has.
Excellent work Tony, the voice overs were fantastic!
It's one of the best honest video reviews about FX30. Nice job!
WOW the footage shot with the iPhone really looked weird. Is it just me or did anyone else think that? I lost track of which shot was done with which camera for the whole time the shot was on screen. Would have loved the camera name to be on the shots it was taken with. I know there was a side by side eventually but for the other shots a bit of text at the bottom would have been nice for me. (I'm old and don't keep up any more).
Yeah the skin tones from the iPhone look unusually orange, but honestly it doesn't look very hard to correct in post.
Yes the iPhone footage looked pretty rough.
Apple are evil just like zelinsky
@@ReganRoss something is very off ,I do not believe that’s coming out from the iPhone. I think something is incorrect by his information or he’s just doing it on purpose. Otherwise he’s probably switching like his wife..
Bro, haven't been to your channel in a while, this video is refreshing
Love this video!!! Best amongst camera content creators, the video was not too technical and featured detailed comparisons with other cameras. Well-Paced, Entertaining, and interesting! Thumbs up!!!
Thanks!
LOVED iT... GREAT VIDEO Tony. Really enjoyed.
I'm enjoying these new scene transitions in your recent videos.
13:31 caught me off guard while working lmao
Excellent coverage of the camera Tony!
Awesome review. Please consider comparing amount of rolling shutter as well.
Great review, thanks! I would love to see a comparison between the FX30 vs. XPERIA 1 IV.
As usual, an excellent review. You are a reviewer who really calls it as you see it. I count on that. Everything I need and nothing that I don't. Thanks for that.
Great comparison and analysis, I think the Z30 with the viltrox 13mm would have been enough for me tho.
Every manufacturer should make top handles like this. Proper audio inputs are a necessity to me for video. Panasonic’s excellent audio interface accessory is the reason I still shoot with the GH5.
This video was super super helpful! Thank you
Well rounded camera. Need to check the color science if is like A7IV or still like FX3/A7SIII
As an SIII user, this looks like it would be a pretty decent B cam. Thanks for the in-depth review!
wow, the sensor crop zoom is really cool
Excellent job breakdown the differences. Thank you 🙏
Despite the GH6 having a lot of features, I will still take the FX30 over it. I currently have the A7iv, which is fantastic. But, I am seriously considering the FX30 as a second camera. I think it is a no brainer despite the smaller sensor.
what a substantial information involved in this video!
This is probably the best review I’ve seen on the fx30. You hit the nail on the head when you said “4k60 is for covering up mistakes” I love that slow-mo. That’s why I always shoot in 4k60, but my projects are always 4k30. The reason I want to upgrade from my ZVE10 to the FX30 for my b-cam needs. Currently using the FX3 as my main camera but I hate shooting in 1080/60 with the ZVE10, and I also hate gimbals. I didn’t know someone else felt the same way I do about 4k60.. lol.
Thank you, this was a really practical introductory overview.
Your comment that you would use the GH6 for ‘everything’ if it had better autofocus. What does the GH6 have that the FX30 doesn’t in terms of your practical workflow and other needs?
Stabilization
Your definitely the best camera reviewer on CZcams. Always interested in your camera videos. Brilliant.👍😊📷🎥📸
Nice review. Would you compare it to a7c? 😎
Thanks for the coverage. How is this camera compared to GH6?
Can't wait to get mine. I love how you can use luts in cam
The slow mo 4K 60 edit was hilarious
Tony and Chelsea I really like these new content you guys are putting out.
🎉🎉🎉
Thanks!
Loving the voiceover you added! lol Hilarious! hahahaahah
Would like to see this up against an a7iii… considering this option as the a7siii is just too expensive for me and with USD being inflated internationally, might be a good alternative considering its 4k120p and 10bit
Yeah, I've got an a73 and a74, would like to see if I need one of these. But we're talking beginners upgrading, compare it to a GoPro.
The side by side comparison should be it's own video or reels. The low light one is very beneficial.
This was such a good head up match & the 3rd person narration cracked me up🤣😂🤣
Hi Tony, great comparisons. I am a new owner the the FX30 for filming. Do you have any videos (yet) on menu setups?
Very informative and entertaining video Tony 😀
Tony (or Chelsea), do the buttons on the Sony GP-VPT2BT Wireless Shooting Grip all work with the FX30? Or with the FX3?
Well, I ordered one at 10PM yesterday. I do interviews and my favorite lens is a Fujinon MK (15-55) that is Super 35 so I think it will be a 'perfect' match.
I want to get a 4K 120 capable camera for wildlife - especially birds in flight. I want the 1.5x crop so the A7Siii is not ideal. I shoot handheld so I'm not sure I could ever be as smooth with a small screen as I could be with an EVF. If the A7R5 has 4K 120 I would probably go for that. However, with this model Sony has all the technology they need to create an a7000, or some such model, with 4K up to 120, bird eye autofocus, and an excellent viewfinder. That would be an answer to the Canon r7 - especially if they put 4K 120 into it, which is something the r7 cannot do. Humorous video :-)
Hi Tony - so I have my Sony a7r3 for all my still photography, specifically wildlife. That camera predominantly holds my 200-600mm lens so as you can imagine to FILM anything close up is next to impossible. I am looking specifically for a camera to shoot video with in wildife, where I can use my (let's say) 24-70mm FF lens. Do you have any suggestions? I think some very important factors I require is decent-ish low light capability, and stability in-built as I can't carry a gimbal continuously WITH my A7R3/200-6700mm combo. Thanks in advance :)
Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4 XF APS-C lens is what most people us with the Nikon Z30 for blogging, they have a good line of APS-C lenses for the Nikon Z mount.
Nice desk setup as well as review 💯🔋🔋🔋
Really hoping to see your Iphone 14 Pro camera review, because no other youtubers have given a satisfactory technical review on the camera yet! They only compared the resolution but not talking about lens sharpness, high iso, equivalent aperture, dynamic range, etc.
I agree i would love to see a proper 14 pro review from tony
I have never had an Apple product in my life but d I clearly saw the comparison where the iphone saturates colors, distorts contour, and deforms face. In other words... apple is trying too hard to be likeable to lay people but not professional photographers who can discern what a good image should look like.
Fantastic!!!
I love the voice over talk getting bored about the stuff you said in the video.
soooo funny.
Great comparison!
So, I’m thinking of this FX30… I’d be getting it to record sermons and lessons for my church. Seems like a good option. Currently I use the ZVe-10. I’m considering this FX-30 for my upgrade… or should I get the FX3 ?
Hi Tony, I am wondering what your take is on this camera being half the price of the FX3. They are very similar, the main difference is the sensor size, and as you've pointed out, the sensor is no longer the main part of the cost. Too big of a "full frame markup" from Sony?
I'd like to see how the fx30 compares to the zv-e10 and if we can see major upgrades
I'd go FX30 for its features. I'm pushing to make corporate videos, short films and mini docs as well as CZcams and livestreaming. The FX30 is a brilliant all-rounder when it comes to all these. Definitely has its limitations but most are easy to overcome. Currently running on the o.g bmpcc. Thinking bout trading it in for an FX30.
Great review! Supposedly the Sony wireless grip isn't compatible with the FX30. B&H says it isn't. Trying to find out if it does.
Tony trolling Tony. Fantastic!🤣
I have to say, the antogonism between footage Tony and voiceover Tony is quite entertaining
So I’m shooting music videos I’m upgrading from an A6000, sold I go fx30 or do the full frame A7iv ?
How does FX30 with the small lenses you mentioned compare to the a7c and tiny Samyang lenses?! For vlogging? Weight, size , price, bokeh
Have a pair of A7iv’s need a 3rd static angle for some weddings and don’t want/need to spring for another a7iv. So glad they are coming out with something at this price point!
Great video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and comparing it to other cameras.
Brilliant as usual
that low light S3 shots is why I bought 2 of them and love them to death because weddings receptions are half of the day.
I use Sony Imaging edge to transfer directly to my phone via direct WiFi. What's the issue you're having Tony?
Great review, thank you! Regarding competitors to the Sony FX-30, I'm surprised you did not mention the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K/6K. I would think they would be pretty close in comparison (the Blackmagic's lack of continuous autofocus notwithstanding).
Can we see this compared to the new Fuji releases since this is an APS-C in a future vid?
That voiceover commentary was funny, Tony. You should keep doing it in the future if it's not too much trouble. 😄
Gonna be getting two of these for CZcams show I produce. One for overhead and the other for cutaways. I plan to use timecode to sync them
Really good and entertaining review. Did you get the same orange skin results with out the orange case?
yeah it's just how iPhones work. It's not the case... the background isn't orange.
13:06 Active (digital crop) stabilization looks great especially in the corners - no weird distracting warping - impressive since many wide-angle lenses create warping in the corners even when image stabilization is turned off.
Make a video A7C VS FX30. Please
What about the Mirco SD/SD card reader that connects to your phone through USB-C? Prograde makes a really good one.
I am loving the voice-overs ragging on your self ... pricesless
I really like Tony's self awareness. Definitely the best part of this whole video 😂
I've used an iPhone to film a few weddings on a gimbal and it's worked fine. Honestly, they're good enough.
"Here's your wedding video, it's good enough"
@@Glenners 😄
I mean, the title of this video has literally got the word “budget” in all caps. For the budget, the iPhone delivers exceptional performance (with a gimbal).
@@Glenners OMG, IM CRYING RIGHT NOW 🤣
Good to know that the iPhone is the go-to camera (esp with a Gimbal) but if / when more is needed the ZV-E10, (Nikon Z30 - esp if better & affordable zoom lenses arrive) and FX30 are seem to be good next steps.
Great review, your pro experience shows easily.
If you have enough money the FX3 with a good lens is the ideal choice. Otherwise is better to buy the half prides FX30 with a very good lens than the FX3 with a mediocre lens. At the end the very good lens will be usable at least a decade while the camera will be propably changed after five years.
Great review. Very tempting. I use a C300 mkiii, but I use an A6300 for all my gimbal shots. I love the a6300, it's been a really great camera, but the FX30 is seriously tempting, especially with the 10bit colour and the amazing autofocus.
Yeah, I enjoy my A6500, The A6300 & A6500 are great cameras. I also have the ZV1 and ZHIYUN M2s too, great combo.
@@EXTEZZEE For sure
LOL! Really funny man...great video.
The biggest advantage of FX30? It uses lenses for APS-C which are a lot cheaper than equivalent lenses for full frame sensors.
As well as generally lighter. I could use the low light capabilities of a full frame camera, but would I like to carry those lenses around all day along with food and backpacking gear? Heck no!
@@anhatur, Weight is alwayas a factor to consider, especailly, as you get older.
I think all that delay in finding a better camera system for shooting mostly reels has finally come to an end. I've been wanting to get a sonyva7iv or a7siii, since I don't have canon gear, the switch should be easy. Was also considering a Canon r6, r6 mark 2, etc.. Now I think the fx30 will be my new goto camera for producing mind blowing reels and horizontal videos, then get myself an a7iv as a more professional workhorse. I currently shot vertical video the annoying way, by mounting the camera on a disturbing way on a video tripod and need a ball head tripod. The interface not rotating with the camera isn't an issue. I shoot on a Canon 7d mark 2 and 5d mark 4 for multichannel vertical video shoots and I just put in the settings before mounting it Just a quick question, is the fx 30 an apsc? Will I need apsc lenses that won't work on sonny's full frame lenses? Also do you have a video explaining how you shoot vertical videos with your Sony a7siii on the gimbal?
I have to say that I believe you have found your next occupation as a comedian if/when all the social media/photography income sources implode. Great Information and laughably entertaining. Great job and thanks for sharing.
Dude I am planning to buy a mirrorless camera for first time and I had made my mind for Fx3 but after your video now I am confused which one I should go for my work is to shoot songs , bts for feature films and run and gun work ..
It's a sub-$2000 camera with 10-bit 4:2:2 internal video recording, which makes S-Log work better. It has IBIS. It shoots 4K 60 and 120P. It has Sony autofocus and lens selection. What's not to like?
Tony, thanks for this great review. One quick and unrelated question: could you please share your light setting and the lense you are using with your a7siii. The sharpness is amazing! I am talking about the one on the studio when you started the video. Thank you!
24 f1.4GM wide open
Oh or maybe it was shut down. I had it at f11 for some scenes with more stuff.
@@TonyAndChelsea Thanks so much for the response. How about the lighting? Were those LEDs? Thanks again!
Im stuck to my nikon d500 no plans for upgraging as I only use it for still shots.
Great job Tony
Compact form factor is nice, and seems it would accept lens from our old FS5. Not sure I’d be recording king form stuff as with the FS5 though.
How long before we see vertical framing and composition in movie theaters?
I fink fx30 and 10-20g need to be compared to a7c and 20mm lens, lets say you use a cine tone settings on a7c and see how video compare? I now a7c dont have 4k 60,but in 4k 24 and 30fps they can compete,i bet from a7c video should look better because of full frame
Haha 😂enjoyed the interjects, great review Tony
Glad you enjoyed it
What camera was used to record when he's on the table talking?
Im wondering if they had education markets for photography/cinematography departments in mind for handing to students doing projects
For video would you go with the xh2s or the fx30?
