@@Jason_Hermann I'm looking for the optimal settings on the Sony FX30 to eliminate motion blur when shooting moving cars on the street. Currently, setting the shutter speed to auto seems to be the only way to achieve some clarity and smoothness. However, the general rule is to set the shutter speed to double the fps. When I shoot with auto shutter speed, it often goes to 1/800 or 1/1000, which doesn't align with the rule, and there are still clarity issues with moving cars.
This issue also persists when I'm stationary in a chair, moving the camera in a circular motion. Even large letters on a cereal box appear blurred. I've tried adjusting the shooting mode to Flexible Exposure Mode and even manual mode. I've set the focus to Continuous AF and also experimented with manual focus. Additionally, I've tested different auto focus transition speeds, such as 5, and AF shift sensitivity settings, ranging from 5 to 1. I've also played with focus area settings, trying both wide and spot focus.
Despite these efforts, I haven't been able to eliminate motion blur or the slight shaking of objects. It's as if the letters aren't entirely clear when I'm shooting. Can you please advise me on the settings I need to adjust to resolve this issue with the Sony FX30 camera? Thanks in advance
You should be paid heavily by Sony! This was a god send! Better than any other video I’ve tried to watch on this camera. I just bought it and was so lost! I feel like a pro now!! Thanks man✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
Wow, thanks :)
Dude. All I can say is…THANK YOU. This video saved me from a ton of frustration and overwhelm.
I actually considered returning my fx30 and buying the Blackmagic pocket 6k.
Totally keeping this now.
Also, I echo other commenters statements - Sony owes you royalties for this one…
This was an incredibly in-depth, well articulated tutorial. Really appreciate your time and effort in putting this together. It was super valuable and I have no doubt I’ll be going back to watch again.
Thanks Travis :)
You taught me the ins and outs of the ZV-e10 and now the FX30 Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience so comprehensively with great attention to detail.
Glad to helped Daniyel and thanks for the kind words :)
Soooo goood. I’ll be rewatching this for years 👍
Good Job Jason a year ago . Just sold my FX6 today was a real complicated one and waste of money so I decided to go to the cheaper and hope it will be more simple to use . Will watch you video a few times till it works for me even my fx3 that I’ve bought Six times and never worked for me so I’ve decided to buy the fx30 with the handle . Thank you for your valuable time

Hello Jay this is Sam I sold my a7IV and bought the FX30 had a hard time setting it to work with my new Ninja V + its been 5 weeks till today until atomos resolved what they could and Sony did the rest in a second so now I am watching your video again to learn about more settings and using the FX30 after I will be ok with it the time for FX6 will come.Thank you for great videos .
Thanks to this video I have found new wheel for iris :) I haven't noticed that before. Abilty to change shutter.iso, aperture without using menu is sooooo good to have.
Wow, it is like printed User's Guide - the one they stopped shipping with new cameras ! Explained in clear, simple language with visual examples. What a treat ! Thank you !
I know how much time it takes to make content like this....i really appreciate your work.
You are very welcome and thanks for the kind words :)
Damnit! If I'd found this tutorial when I first bought the camera, I wouldn't have spent the last year tearing my hair out. Awesome! Keep up the great work.
I’m going to have to watch again with a notebook & take notes. I’m not a total beginner, but I always forget how I program things & end up back at auto settings. 🤣 this is fantastic material.
Glad it was helpful and yeah its really hard to keep track of all the different settings. I have some notes I refer to from time to time, because I can't remember everything from all these different cameras... lol
This was a fantastic video! I'm new to photography and new to the FX30 (firmware version 3.0). I have been looking for a video to walk me through from beginning to almost end. Most videos or just piecemeal so you have to watch a ton of videos and mesh it all together before you can come out with basic knowledge. This video provided everything you needed to get up and running! Thank you for taking the time to make it!!!
I just purchased this camera and coming from canon I had zero clue! Thank you for this video!
The moment I get my FX30, I'll be watching this video again for reference all the way through ❤
Watched this after I unboxed mine. Moved from canon so I have experience with cameras but I def learned a few things I would t have figured out for a bit 😂
Excellent beginner video, Sony should commission you for these. The other Pros often go through setup videos so fast that it is hard to follow them, a waist of time. Your timing though is right on point. Well done, godspeed for your channel growth.
Wow, thanks Lucas :)
awesome video. I paused aa bunch of times, and I am sure I will have to rewatch some parts. But you really go through a lot to get going. I just got this camera today and feel a lot more comfortable using it after watching this.
Glad it was helpful!
Just discovered you. Your video was extremely useful, concise and informative. Thank you very much your a star 🎆 I will definitely return to your channel.
Thank you for taking the time to do this. After shooting ENG cameras for 25 years, I needed a tutorial course like this - for beginners- which I am when it comes to this camera. I'm gonna play with my new toy and come back to this as needed. Thanks again.
I cant afford an fx 30. However, i love cameras, so watching a master class on one of the top end cameras has been a joy. Thank you for your experience and expertise in this area.❤❤❤ 😊😊😊
Thanks for watching!
Blown away by the excellence of this tutorial. The demonstrations are perfect and your breezy conversational style made it a pleasure to listen. Thank you!!
You're very welcome!
Thanks a lot for this in depth crash course. Very informative. Well done.
Super helpful! Thank you for this!!!
Just ordered the FX30…great video you have here - incredibly helpful!
I'm in minute 4 of the video and I'm already impressed with the clarity of how you explain things! thank you so much and you can already count with my 90 minutes view contribution! hahaha
Awesome, Thank you for watching and the kind words :)
Thanks for the video. The video we all were waiting for.
Thank you for making these video's. I just picked up this camera and i am VERY excited to use it!
I got my Fx30 today. So excited to shoot with it. Thanks for the tutorial. ❤ appreciate it.
Brilliant info! Thanks!
Thank you so much for taking time to make this video. You broke everything down very well. I have shot ENG cameras for a long time and am trying to expand my skills. This video is what I needed. Bookmarked as I am sure I will be visiting it again.
Thank you so much Jason :) ❤
Thank you so much Jason. I just upgraded all my camera and workflow from Canon to Sony and was super intimidated by my new FX30. This video was so helpful taking it step by step through the cameras functions and modes. All makes much more sense now and I look forward to getting out there and filming.
Jason I have set it a few times but looks like wrong it’s so complicated for new users I keep factory reset the fx30 but not sure where I will get . Plus I can’t concentrate very much as I am kind of sick hope one day it will work for me thx
Love it. Thank you so much. Still deciding between fx30 and pocket 6k pro. Leaning towards fx30 though.
Thank you!!! Made it easy for me 💯
thank you brothrer helped me a lot!

Just upgraded from sony a6300 to this beast and watched many tutorials about it but this was the most completed tutorial for sony fx30 , thank you 🙌
la mejor camara de todos los tiempos
can you please do a video in which you explain how to transfer videos from this sony to a mac? cause when i transfer my videos, they seem to be completely without the color settings that i've putted into the camera. thank you so much
Your video is the best on explaining the the whole settings on the camera I just purchased mine, but mine is showing 23.98 f why is that? I live in California.
Hey @Jason, love your work, you are my go to, for every new camera.
I have the fx30, and I was wondering why my camera shows Frame Rate with: 59.94p / 29.97p / 23.98p / 119.88p instead of 60 /30 / 24 and 120 ?
That is normal and yes a bit odd I agree... You can look into frame rates for a few hours if you really want to know all the weirdness that goes into it... I honestly do not recall off the top of my head why, but I have looked it up in the past out of curiosity and at the ned of the day it has no noticeable effect on anything I do...
Jay from your expertise which is the best MG lens to buy for VIDEO shooting outdoors, I took my SEL14F18GM and was So SO then my other lens Sony FE24-70mm f/2.8 GM Lens taking photos some are blurry and others great videos where good but not perfect.Which lens will be the easiest to take out and shoot a good video>Thx
THANK U!!!!!!!!!!
Many thanks sir from India.....
You are very welcome!
Hi Jason, great guide! i need to film on tripod (on a studio) for 6 hours. Can i use the camera plugged to the USB charger all the way? I bought the original Sony Adaptador de CA ACPW20 but found out it doesn't work for the FX30 and can't find a Sony battery adapter for this camera model.
If you have a PD Power Source that will power the camera with the battery inside for a long while, but in my opinion what I would recommend for a studio environment is a Dummy Battery solution like this: geni.us/KfnlFY
Awesome tutorial! Definitely earned a sub from me.
Awesome, thank you!
33:00 i love this
Thanks for this usefull Guide, really well explained. I have a question though, I see your frame rate goes from 24p to 120p and you also have 30 and 60... on mine, I only have 25, 50 and 100p, do you have a specific setting ?
You r camera is set to PAL mode, mince is set to NTSC, because I line in North America... The camera ship that way depending on where you live... You can change it here: MENU → (Setup) → [Area/Date] → [NTSC/PAL Selector] → [Enter] helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2220/v1/en/contents/TP1000845206.html?search=pal
Hello does it has 1.04 crop at all frame rates?
What do you think is better wait for the new 6700?thx for your job
It's very hard to say, because I have no idea if Sony is going to come out with an A6700. I hope they do, but do not know... So for photography specifically I would wait, but if your into video the FX30 is an awesome option!
nice
Thanks for this great video. When I attach an external monitor, the monitor on the camera turns off. I'd like to see both obviously. Where can I change that? Thanks
Hey James, you can't have both on at the same time if you have the camera info displayed on the external monitor. If you turn off display info in the hdmi settings both screens should be on, but only the camera settings will appear on the fx30 screen and the monitor is a clean looking output.
@@Jason_Hermann Bravo! Thank you so much. I just installed my first rig and I need to keep the monitor open.
Hi Jason, I'm looking for the optimal settings on the Sony FX30 to eliminate motion blur when shooting moving cars on the street. Currently, setting the shutter speed to auto seems to be the only way to achieve some clarity and smoothness. However, the general rule is to set the shutter speed to double the fps. To illuminate motion blur you will need to increase the shutter speed. I don't see any way around that fact. I agree about the rule, but that also depends on what you are doing. Filming high speed moving subjects is much harder than slow or non moving subjects as we know...
@@Jason_Hermann Hi Jason thanks for the reply, do you have any recommendations for such occasions, say while you shoot sports events and shoot city traffic? do you suggest any parameters?
Watching this because thinking of getting this camera, my only concern is the air in/out take vents, wouldn’t it be dust magnets?
I don't think so as I have not heard of any complaints in that regard.... I would imagine an occasional cleaning from Sony if in dirty environments would be recommended. They offer that with there Pro service.
Do you think this camera is good to video your sons night football game from the sidelines at either 60 or 120 fps? I like to use slow motion on some plays.
Yes, it's one of the best options on the market today in my opinion.
Hi Jason,
I hear you should overcompensate at least +1 or +1,5 stops in S-log 3 to get less noise in the shadows!
Can I set it without seeing these seemingly overexposed areas that you see on the screen with the zebra function on the screen?
I mean set +1 to +1.5 stop overexposure but see on the screen the image you get after editing in DaVinci
Or do you always have to look at an image on the screen that is a bit overexposed to the eye, but displays the ideal image after correction?
I'm about to order this camera, but do some research first!
Thank you for this very good tutorial!
Hello, a lot of people say to get the maximum dynamic range you should overexpose by 1- 1.5 stops... In general I do not agree and I expose based off the manufactures recommendations for the most part when in my studio. I use a grey card and zebras to check exposure as you can see in this video using Slog2 for example: czcams.com/video/jnn82Fhc4Do/video.html Slog3 is very similar when exposing, but the numbers are 41% for the zebras as apposed to 32 for slog2. Slog 2 you can over expose a bit for better noise control and it's more noticeable, because Slog2 has way less information then slog3... Outside it is a bit harder to tell so I use the histogram and look at the image on the screen to judge.
thanks for your reply
I will definitely apply the gray card method, and test it myself!
But I don't have any experience with these Sony cameras so I do research on the internet!
you are awesome
I just recently purchased the fx-30, and I’m trying to figure out why is my fps displayed as 59.94, 29.97 and 23.98 instead of the normal 120, 60, 30, 24? My FX3 and other Sony cameras I have all display it the right way, but this one don’t. Is there anyway to correct it?
At 32:49 you menu is showing the auto or manual settings next to iso and f5.6 and 1/250 that you talk about and set them all on auto but i dont see all those. The menu is different but i have it on movie mode and its all in the same settings as you outside of that cause i have been following along. Anything that would cause those to not show up?
Also your frame rate shows the exact number but mine shows the 23.98p and so on. Not sure why this is.
Hey Mate! These must be incredibly intensive to shoot and edit, but curious if you're planning an A7RV beginners guide?
I was thinking about it, but was not sure how much of a demand there would be for that beast of a camera... Cleary there is some :)
With this camera fx30.. can I use lens full frame 24-70mm gm ii.please
Yes
Does it shoot 3EV or 5EV when the drive mode is on Bracketing?
You set that yourself to what you desire.
Can you attach a clip on mic on there?
How to shoot sdd directly in fx30 plz tell me
Is this camera good instead of the A6600? I never use burst or action photography. I also saw that this camera is good for photography....
This FX30 is optimized for video and has a built in cooling fan for longer form recording in warm environments. It can take photos, but I would not recommend this camera for photography. The A6400 geni.us/L75omA is a great option, or the A7 IV geni.us/ZlYsk is what I have and is full frame... The A7C geni.us/N6UyGd would be a more affordable option similar to the A6400, but a full frame version...
Question, when you add a tripod plate it looks like it covers the fan inlet vent, is that correct?
Yes, the plate I used was huge and it slightly blocked the fan inlet, but not completely... That tripod plat is larger than normal though and I should have used a different one. Either way the vent still had some breathing room and it caused no issues...
