I was in Madrid last week for a conference and used the Metro a lot. Me and my travelling companion (a lady) are both over 60 years - on EVERY journey, a young person offered her a seat! Lovely people and lovely city! James.

You may have noticed in Spain no statuary of war Heros, just of our famous composers ,poets artists & authors ,in Alcoy a small park named Cervantes .
A disgusting act on May23 ,at the end of Francos regime the brave Captain Reginald Davison on the S.S Stanbrook saved @ 2,000 Republicans from certain death ,a bronze bust of him celebrating his ɓravery on display in the port of Alicante was painted with Swastikas, a cleanup job , they loved the destruction of the town of Guernica the furthest reach of Nazi bombers , totally destroyed with many deaths, one of Picasso's last paintings based on the horrors

I live with my 58 years old Companion MariCarmen in my village of Gaianes & as today we go to Muro de Alcoy to do some shopping ,when finished I park the Suzuki Alto car near our bar El Bracal & leave it unlocked with keys in ign, no one steals here ,& for the bar owner will get going a found microwave , reward 5 litres of virgin olive oil , best in the world sweet and low acid , used much in cooking ,French cuisine & wines , load of bshit ,Spanish have wonderful recipes as you may know in Madrid .French hate this ! A very good tinto in cartons €1.05 per litre , try the best " Ribera del Duerro "on sale just over € 3 ,our Cavas cheaper than Bolinger & Moet ^ Chandon ,not much more than € 3,50 !
From beer kits from Colchester home brew ( over there 10 days last year ) my brewery is about to brew 40 pints of Mild .
Years since on the London metro ! No body spoke m not like in Spain ,we jabber away in Spanish ,too many ex British here havent bothered to learn Spanish , now my prime language !

Clearest explanation I've seen! Sadly, it came out a month after I returned and had figured most of that out by personal experience. Awesome that you note the platform will only host YOUR train, unlike NYC or SFO where multiple lines share your platform.

About going to the airport and back, there is a second bus express line (200) that goes from the terminals to Avenida de america in the buisness distric (María de Molina-Castellana) with a stop on Canillejas connecting to metro L5 (to go to the center) and only costs the flat rate of 1.5€ and then is also the option of taking the Cercanías C1 or C10 that take you from the terminals to Recoletos (5 minutes from Cibeles) for the flat rate of 2.5€, and only takes 30 minutes, the only downside is that if you are going from the T1, T2 or T3 you will have to travel to the T4 to catch the Cercanías.
Also coment that metro is working to create a direct route from the T4 to atocha in the form of an expansion of the line 11 and a conection with treminals 1,2 and 3 with callao and gran vía in the form of a Line 5 expansion
Apart from that very good explanation of the system and specially about the multi card that can be a bit confusing about if it's better to take a 10-Journey or Single tickets.

A good explanation for the metro and for going to the airport is that there are also regular bus lines from the EMT, the public company, and two Cercanías train lines that take you directly to various places and stations in the city, even from outside the city. center.

Right now the metro is being extended so apart of the line 8 also line 5 will reach T123 and line 11 will reach T4, and that will be very useful if you are not going straight to Atocha or Cibeles.

James & Yoly, thanks for sharing and educating. When in Madrid in 2019 from the UK, I found the metro quite easy to use, but buying a travel card was quite confusing. Also if you choose the wrong exit from a station, it can totally throw you when you have planned a route, as I found out to my cost. I relied on Google Maps, to plan my route but they were inaccurate as to the exits, as the exit I used wasn't even shown. Thank you both for this guide! ❤

4:57 Glad I am not the only one who is completely confused whenever using the Cercanias trains. Every time I tried to use the system, I was either on the wrong track, wrong train or wrong direction. Is it too much to ask to have a concise list of arrivals displayed at the stations and the destination displayed on the trains? I live in Philadelphia, which is essentially a third world city when it comes to transit, but even we do this. Come on Madrid, you excel in so many ways, time to get the Cercanias right too!

Great info. The Metro probably seems intuitive to the locals, but to tourists it can sometimes be quite cofusing. Just FYI, we use Cercanias quite a lot, mainly because, we usually have long distance train tickets in hand. Most of those tickets are CombinadoCercanias, which means the Cercanias trip is free if used withing 3 to 4 hours of your train trip. A great way to get between the airport (T4), Chamartin or Atocha for free.

about pickpockets, I guess it can be a bit more complicated than that - they also target people who seem distracted, people who are in groups, either the youngest or the oldest people around, and people who look like they might be carrying expensive items. The pickpockets themselves can be of any age, in one story I heard from Madrid he was a very handsome older man, stood close to his targets who thought he might be flirting with them and was caught with his hand in their bag. They have very light hands and sometimes employ distraction tactics, they are pros. We tend to think we are worldly and that it would never happen to us...well, unfortunately they are very daring and very experienced - it pays to be slightly paranoid in this case. Ojo!👁

Yes, I'm a paranoid city dweller, but it has served me well.

You and Yoli make the most interesting videos about Spain. I'm certain you are making special tours. The Metro in Madrid is the easiest network to figure out, but thank you for helping first time travellers. Personally, I prefer to walk and stay in the center of the city. Day trips to Toledo, Salamanca are easy to schedule via Cercanias trains. From T4 there is a bus the 203 that takes you straight into the center (Banco de España) stop. I believe the last time I took it it was only 5 euros.

Great vid, so basically if you do the London Underground you can do the Madrid Metro!
It's very useful that you can use the 10 trip card for more than one person per journey.
Do you guys have a video for the 10 or so best places to visit in Madrid?

Great video and very useful for my upcoming visit, thanks. One question perhaps you can help with? In your video it says the 10 trip Metrobús ticket: €6,10. On the Madrid Metro site it says it is €12.20?

Can we ride with the 10 journey pass with family of 4? Or each needs his/her own? Thanks for the great video😊

Great Vid. One point I came across. Pay attention to the wheelchair symbols on the direction signs in stations. If you randomly follow direction signs with and without the symbol you can end up going round in a circle. Done it😁

So it's a little bit like in my country ( France) so won't be Lost

A very good video, as usual. However, central Madrid is tiny compared to, say, London. By the time you have faffed around with the metro, you might as well have walked (though I hasten to add not from the airport).

4.52. Any idea when contactless payments are coming? Normally they have a trial run first which is an indication it's coming ?

Thanks for the information, we plan to share 10 journey on multi card for 2 persons from airport, do we have to pay €3 for 2 persons or just €3 on one card

Do you know if the $30 flat fee from airport or to airport applies to both taxi cars or mini van taxis?

As a family of 4 visiting Madrid we found it about the same price to just take a cab instead of walking to the stations. It would have been cheaper for longer trips but short trips maybe it was just a few € more to use a taxi.
