My attempt to get into Kaiji as a character and break down how he operates.
I wouldn't bother going fullscreen with this one. High-res Kaiji footage is hard to come by. But my audio is getting better, so that's cool.

Kaiji is honestly peak in terms of character writing, simply brilliant. When so many anime feel the need to beat the audience over the head with the virtuousness of their main character, or star edgy antiheroes that are immoral for the sake of drama or shock value, it's a breath of fresh air to see a character which, despite lacking stereotypically positive qualities and being frequently selfish, cynical, angry and reckless, fights tooth and nail to never lose hope or become a monster that exploits the ones that trust him. This is a level of realism and moral ambiguity that I think is exceptionally rare, but incredibly thrilling the few times I have seen it.

      Not really.
I just finished rewatching the anime and i had this
      way smarter in memory.
The anime is way simpler than i remembered...
I guess i overdid the thing where you just see

      you would do better.
But i just rewatched it all and especially with
      E-Card, i realized: Wow, he's dumb.
Kaiji is just a bad player.
It's painful to watch him play E-Card without
apparently ever having heard the word Pokerface in
his whole life. Never ever. In his whole life,
he never heard the word. It takes 4 Episodes to
explain the concept to him. The Villains even
      get poetically about it.
The Villains really talk this bigger than it is (they love being
poetic in this anime), but it's literally: If you would
do a Top 10 Video for youtube, about what exactly in
exact order of level of simplicity someone could do something,
Kaiji would literally do 9 after 10, 8 after 9, and so on.
This isnt even about reading stuff.
He's just very dumb, a very bad player and just
overall really, really, really bad at playing.
      E-Card makes this painfully obvious.
Kaiji is so bad at Poker-Face and just 'Thinking' overall,
his Strategys will fail. Cause everyone can guess his strategy,
as he does Strategy Rank 4 in Simplicity right after Rank 5.

    • @Halucygeno
      @Halucygeno Před 3 lety +22

@@slevinchannel7589 I don't really follow what you're saying. What do you mean his Strategies are Rank 4 in Simplicity?
Also, whether Kaiji is a good gambler or not is besides the point. Even if we assumed that the only reason he wins any of his bets is because he's really, really lucky, that wouldn't change the fact that he cares about other people. Kaiji wants to treat them "justly", while knowing full well how cruel and unfair the world is. He has experienced it firsthand: the show's very first arc, restricted rock-paper-scissors, ends with him getting betrayed by his friends for money. Yet in the arc immediately after that, despite trying to convince himself that he'll play only to his own interests, he refuses to be cruel and push the person in front. Kaiji's strength as a character is partially because (at least I think) his plans are clever, but that isn't what makes him so charismatic.
I think the best way to summarize it is to say that Kaiji acts selfishly, but never breaks a promise. Whenever he teams up with anyone, it's always for some kind of gain; be it getting more cards or having more money to bet with. But once he succeeds, he always fairly returns what he has gained in equal measure to those who trusted him. He almost manages to be the perfect blend of practical and idealistic, which is why he's so inspiring.

And no, calling a strategy "Rank 4 in Simplicity" is not a metaphor. It looks like some sort of attempt to quantify skill, which is completely meaningless unless the person you're talking to has a frame of reference. I could say that I feel "Rank 5 sadness", but if I don't explain what Rank 2 or Rank 7 sadness looks like, then nobody can infer any clear information from my statement, other than the fact I'm sad.

That is incredibly sweet of you to say. I adore Kaiji, and while the Giorno video was the first one I really felt good about after making, this was where I got a sense of "this is what I can do that other Anitubers cannot".
I have been torn up until now about my lack of exposure. In general I feel very confident about my scripts, but know that the production can be a bit rough (I think I've realized that my main issue has been over-processing audio) and wondered if staying obscure while I learn the ropes might not be a bad thing.
That said, the lack of exposure can be a bit disheartening (especially the lack of comments, which are my favorite part) and I really do feel like there is a segment of Anitube which would like what I do if I could manage to reach them. I'm really realizing how big a role the algorithm plays in popularity. Like a third of my views have come in the last week, and I'm pretty sure it's because Oceaniz made his Giorno video and mine ended up in his recommended feed.
After spending the last month trying to not end up homeless (I live in a pretty tough rental market) I actually do have some stability, and have been thinking it might be time to change my approach to CZcams. I have 3 or 4 mostly-done scripts, and think I can commit to releasing a video every other week, at least for a while. Part of my issue is I'm too fussy about writing and need to accept that not every idea needs to be perfect.
I will be setting up some kind of payment thing at some point. I have a long history of jumping the gun with victory laps before I actually succeed and didn't want to get hung-up on being rewarded for my videos before I actually had some consistent viewers.
At this exact moment, having one or two people who kind of give a shit is more than I could ask for, but I will definitely remember you saying that. Hopefully the next few months will be a turning point for this channel and simply being there is encouraging in and of itself.

I just finished rewatching the anime and i had this
      way smarter in memory.
The anime is way simpler than i remembered...
I guess i overdid the thing where you just see
yourself in that person's shoes and you know
      you would do better.
Sorry for the long comment, but whats your thoughts?

Very glad you like it. I have not checked out MMT yet, though I really need to. I actually got a few chapters into Strongest Man Kurosawa and it's really made me want to check out all of Fukumoto's other works because I was amazed at how strong his writing is, even when the gambles are removed.
I really do want to do something with the spinoffs and other properties (even if it's just a "why you should read/watch"), but it's definitely not going to happen anytime soon.

Wow this is a fantastic analysis, probably the best Kaiji video on the internet or at least CZcams. Incredibly professional delivery. I guess maybe the last bit where you say “And that’s fucking awesome”, was a bit out of nowhere. I swear all the time so I have no ethical issue with swearing but you had such a professional delivery in the whole video that it was a bit of a jarring shift when you went to the top shelf of the most basic emphasizer words like fuck. Especially when it’s sort of read off of a pre written script, the word loses its dynamic sense of spontaneity.
Either way that didn’t ruin or hurt the video at all by any means, but maybe make the video more casual language sprinkled (uses phrases like “he shits all over bitches”, I dunno) or I dunno, is fucking awesome like the only way to describe if something is top of the top notches?

Great video! I think you hit the nail on the head with the points you made.
I really, really enjoyed the two seasons there are of the main story. I love Kaiji as a character, the story and world are surprisingly sober for anime (look at Kakegurui, for instance. Another gambling anime, and I love it, but it's more fantasy gambling, to me anyway. The characters and the concepts, and of course they are in high school).
I also love the exaggerated features of the characters.

You know I always took Kaiji as someone that got that maybe he is the victim here, but in this very moment thats irrelevant because its do or die.
Kaiji and his many friends that are here on the journey do tend to be victims but the thing that separates Kaiji from the rest of the cast is Kaiji will not just stop at "im a victim and OOPS thats it" victim or no, you gotta get out of this debt, you cant just chill out in the slave camps and you cant just weltch on your bets, and you especially cant weltch on you and your friends cause thats just like dudes like Hyodo and Tonegawa, except with less money involved.
But I guess that point can be negated with, maybe Kaiji thinks like that but Kaiji is constantly proved to be naive for thinking this half measure.
But ahh good video, best Kaiji vid ive seen
