    In this video, I show you how to keep a chord progression interesting over the course of an entire track. More than that, in fact….how you can use that ONE chord progression to structure your entire arrangement very, very quickly.
    Most videos show you HOW to write a chord progressions, without showing you this key arrangement skill. You can have the best chord progression in the world, but then you need to know how to use it through out your track without it getting boring or repetitive. In this chord progression / arrangement tutorial, I combine those two skills into one easy hack for getting out of an 8 bar loop and to a full arrangement as quickly as possible.
    I also show when you might want to use more than one chord progression, and how to do it.

      Im a huge overthinker, but im also a bit confused right now. Because some people say you should vary some of your phrases, like for example just changing one chord and then solving that on the next part. And also i had listen several songs i like than are quite repetitive, but they say the same thing in different ways i dont know if that makes sense. But then a mentor I had hated my "repetitive" song and Im not sure how then proceed.

      @@EDMTips Thanks for the reply!
      I'm currently studying a mixing course and they use ProTools for mixing but I prefer Abelton. They talk a lot about Groups, Busses, Aux and Sends etc and I understand how they're set up in ProTools but not sure how to achieve this on Ableton.
      For example, if I have kick, snare and hi hat tracks and group them on Ableton, have I created both a group and a sub mix of the drums which is then routed to the master automatically? It seems in ProTools these are two separate things to do which Ableton does as one.
      Return tracks on Ableton I think are the Auxes and your sends are in the audio/midi track area that you can bring up to 0.
      A video explaining this better would be amazing! Hope it makes sense

    What I do is take my chorus let's say C G am F...I will use C G F F for my verse, am F for pre chorus then of course C G am F for the chorus...my bridge I will go with a minor progression (if the chorus Starts with a Major chord) using at least one different chord but using some of my chords from the chorus, like maybe dm F am G for example. Usually chords aren't my problem...it is finding a good rhythm for them and a melody that doesn't sound too boring! lol I do appreciate all that you do here!

    What you also can do is starting on the 5th chord with some alterd notes to make it more dissonant… eventually it resolves beautifully to the one chord but you have to do it intelligently so that the dissonant voices resolve properly with smooth voice-leading. (Which means resolving a note or voice as close as possible to a chord tone of the next chord) Of course it always depends on context but as far as i know the 5th chord is the strongest pull towards the root chord of the key. Your listers will be surprised when it resolves because they hear a chord, thinking it’s the root but it isn’t so 😅

And that may sound silly, but music theory and writing music is daunting, but you teach it in such a way that makes it exciting and fun (and easy) again. Rather than viewing it as a task to be completed, I find myself looking forward to opening my daw and implementing the tricks and tips that you share, and I never come away from a video feeling like, "oh I should have known that already, duh."

    11:54 I kinda like that feature that Ableton has where youre highlighting a certain spot of the pattern and copy/pasting/duplicating it over to a blank spot. Idk if FL studio has this feature. Like is your pattern in the playlist auto cut up already so you can do that? Because the way it is in FL I would have to cut (hold right click for the cut tool shortcut) the pattern into sections and then click on the desired section and click on an empty spot on the playlist to paste/duplicate it, or I could highlight the section and copy/paste/duplicate.

    • @AutPen38
      @AutPen38 Před rokem

      Arrangement in FLS used to be really difficult/frustrating because the program was based on loops in the channel rack (to the entent that I would often render the loops as WAVs and then chop and arrange in another program, like Acid Music for example), but the playlist page was greatly expanded and improved several years ago (and the latest version has some more improvements too). It's not perfect, but the FLS playlist arranger is pretty easy and quick these days. Slicing up midi parts and copy/pasting them where you like in the playlist/arrangement window is fairly similar to the way Ableton does it. You just have to learn the keyboard shortcuts and get used to the slightly different workflow.

    On just watching the first 100 seconds or so of this video, made me question my entire approach to 'making music'... I'd previously studied sheet music to songs by the debatable songwriting greats such as: Phil Collins, George Michael, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Queen, etc etc (apologies to those writers/performers I have not credited: your music still lives within me)., whose music involved variations in chord progressions (and sometimes not) from intro, verse, bridge, chorus, etc, etc. To all the Duran Duran and Spandau fans, to the fans of more prominent producers of music of recent times, Will's advice will leave you gasping.

    • @AutPen38
      @AutPen38 Před rokem

      Contemporary electronic music is much more harmonically simple than most pop music of the '80s or before. Instead of taking you on a journey via multiple chord- (or even key-) changes, the ebbs and flows, peaks and troughs come from changes in the sounds themselves, with elements coming in and disappearing and with automation of effects. Older music was often played live, of course, so the bass player or guitarist, for example, played throughout a song and was more or less stuck with one sound throughout. (A guitarist could step on a pedal for the chorus, however). To reduce boredom in the past, songs would have chord and key changes. It doesn't happen so much now, partly because dance music is "supposed to be" hypnotic and repetitive, with changes created in a different way. You can have multiple synths that appear briefly for short times. You couldn't do that when the band only had one keyboard player stuck with one preset for the whole song.

    Hello Will, at 6:48 - basically it is not a chord, right? It is just the arpeggiated bassline that is playing all the time without the chords, and then the pads at 7:02. And this is what confuses me in music production, i saw a video of a known melodic techno producer and when he showed his pads, the pads were actually chords - to live with his words "these are the pads" and it was clearly a chord progression, and in your video at 7:13 the chords start to play and the bassline stops (but at 7:02 the pads played), so what the hell is a pad then if it can be a chord too, but judging by your video it is not. Pads can be just a long sustained single note for a couple of bars or a progression of sustained single notes with a ton of reverb: for example a drone sound or whatever, but it can be a chord progression too with multiple notes? This confuses me, because if i already have chords in my song, do i have to put pads too, and if i put pads (and the concept of a pad can obviously have a ambiguous meaning and function depending on the context and producer), do i need chords? If say, i already have a working chord progression, would it be a mistake if i use chords too (or just power chords) in the background as a "pad" (with a different sound) and carve out some of the frequencies (or put octave higher) to not clash with the actual chords and then pan the sound, or in that case the pads must be just a progression of single notes to not interfere too much with the real chords and other elements? Can you please explain this a little bit.
    P.S. I enjoy watching your videos and how you explain things - you are truly and expert, and i see you enjoy doing it.

    Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536 MB

      Just buy the most powerful laptop that your budget allows. People were making hit records with Ableton and Cubase fifteen years ago on computers that were less powerful than what you're probably using today. It's not the computer that makes the music, it's the human.

      @@AutPen38 Yes...but the softwares were not so "hungry" at that time !!! ... this is why I insiste on looking for a daw that "flows"... I've been working for years in a big budget studio with protools, and no problems... But to have fun traveling and beeing able to do nearly everything with a lap top, a sm58, a small midi keyboard and my guitar, I started a long time ago with SONY acid loop, 4 then 5 then 6 etc... and I really loved it at that time, with all my personal samplers banks etc... But now with the vers.11 I just can't bear anymore it's crashes ( it's a real shame because I know it so well)...
      Now, in 2023, I think that if I want to have a good all in one daw and fun, it should be Ableton live (suite or not , I don't know) but I will have to start from the beginning again !!!.. To me, the paradise would be NO CRASHES ANYMORE !... So... 16 GB of ram should be ok, no ?..and what about procesor etc...
      (in the 80s there was no internet, NO WILL DARLING mennn !!! only future music magazin and have some good friends in the music shop in London to figure out if I should buy or not a roland s50, a s330, a Roland MKII secuencer etc. (and a lot of floppy discs LOL). ... now it's much more fun and easy with youtube channels like this one).

      @@yanudol I get by on a four-year-old PC with 8GB of RAM, but more successful producers than me have even more basic setups. Having more memory and CPU power might make things flow a little bit better, but you can always "freeze and consolidate" tracks if your computer struggles with the latest plugins. You really don't need the world's most powerful computer to make music. Having the latest gear is more of a luxury than a necessity.

    So your vids finally broke that 16 bar loop curse! However, I got so excited with chord progressions and melodies that I went to town with them and made 3 of each and then tried to utilise them all in a track while introducing them gradually and giving them their own turn in the spotlight - needless to say the lesson I learnt is to keep things real simple and use production techniques and FX to generate and continue the story telling. That’s my next goal and it’s good to finally break free of the loops and have an actual arrangement to work on! Thanks Will!
