I was on morphine for 4 years with my amputation below knee right leg. I was in a motorcycle accident. It was rough to come off of. I cut down gradually then stopped at 15 ml a day. After 3 days when all the morphine drained out of me the withdrawal symptoms hit hard. It lasted a month. I still took gabapentin 3200 no a day. Then I stopped that after cutting it down pretty quick. More withdrawal. The pain doctor was right. It hurts no more or no less without the drugs. It was in my head that I needed it. I took them way longer than I should have. I'm ok with a certain amount of pain I have to deal with. Keep up the good work you're so upbeat and inspiring.

@@FootlessJo happy to hear. But Jo you stated in this video this is only your first DAY of not taking your opiate medication. Shouldn't you tell everyone you're going to be going through withdrawal by tonight. And in fact struggle incredibly. It is impossible for you to stop talking those kind of prescriptions and stop at one day and think you'll be fine. It would be lying to yourself and all of your viewers. Right.
I wish you luck and positivity my friend 😊

@@jenpinkerton773 Hi Jenna! Great point and I appreciate you bringing that up. However, I've been working alongside my pain medication doctor for months now to slowly cut back the dose which I brought up in the video (because you're totally right - just stopping would trigger crazy withdrawls!). Since January - and the day I filmed this video was the first full day off of them. I didn't go into withdrawls and haven't - its been about a week totally off of them now. Some extra anxiety which is normal, but thankfully, that's it. Grateful to have been able to come off of them slowly with good medical help!

    So happy for you.
My husband is on pain meds due to injuries while in the military. At one time he was on 2 high dose opioids plus Gabapentin & he's been able to stop the Gabapentin & 1 opioid completely & cut WAY back on the other.
One unexpected thing that REALLY helped was him getting on Oxygen. He has low O2 due to central apnea (his brain forgets to breathe) but getting on Oxygen really helped his pain levels as well. Some relief was almost immediate, more as his body was able to repair some of the damage from long term low O2 levels. To anyone reading this I'm not a doctor, not giving medical advice, etc but if someone is on pain meds & there's any chance O2 could be low please look into it bc low O2 levels increases pain.

Yea Jo! Congratulations! I recently moved and the a-hole Dr. I saw down here stopped me cold turkey after 12 years! Stupid on his part? Yes. And my anxiety and depression went off the wall as well so I get what you're saying. You said all of this wonderfully and chose your words wisely, but most of all, thank you for putting this out there! Sadly with the opioid crisis and the new state I live in, for me, getting back on meds IS the only way I function. I moved almost 6 months ago and I'm STILL no unpacked! Smh. But with only a three-to-four hour window of barely functioning, I'm done for the day! By the time I get dressed, take care of the animals and do breakfast and lunch, I'm done.
I wish you could send this to every doctor out there.....not everyone WANTS to be on these drugs, some of would just like to have some sort of semblance of a normal life! Blessing and love, Grannie Annie.

I am 19 and have had constant pain in both my ankles for the past 3 years, but my doctor doesn't want me on any intense pain killers until we know actually what is wrong and what will be needed, so at the moment I am just going round lots of specialists seeing if anyone has any answers, but I hope that maybe by the end of the year I will have some answers and a plan in place to manage it! I am so proud/happy for you! I had a similar experience, but with anxiety meds. Which I know is a whole different ball game. Still I found myself stressed about going to the appointments or calling the pharmacy for my meds, sometimes to the point of anxiety attacks, and I started to question how much the meds were actually doing. They had been so helpful at first, I wouldn’t have made it through my first year of college without them. But then I realized that they weren’t always helping. I ended up being my cat to college as an ESA (not a service animal that is a very important distinction) and I was feeling way better with him so I talked to my doctor and got myself off the meds. It feels amazing to not have those pills in my life. Like you said they have their place and they are invaluable there, but there are some times when their purpose has been served and seizing that moment can be incredibly liberating. Thank you for all that you do and good luck!

    Fellow chronic pain sufferer here...
As time goes on I think we get used to pain to some extent. I certainly have and any acute pain away from my usual areas hurts way worse than my normal pain. Along with increasing your dose and tolerance to the medication I think its likely your tolerance to the pain increased. At the stable dose you were on it was probably doing nothing, so as you reduce the dose your pain level stayed constant.
I'm on an opiod too and with the slow dose version over night I am wiped the next day. With a different medication type for my illness I've been able to taper my dose and I had a 24hr period without any earlier in the year 🎉 then my new med got temporarily stopped for medical reasons. So up went my opiod dose... I'm back on new med now and tapering the opiod again, but the new med takes 3 months to kick on every single time 🙄 I hope to be able to stop that at some point too.

I agree with you 100% Nicola. I think the pain you feel becomes relevant to how long you have had that pain. The body 'learns' what 'normal' is and the bar moves up.

      @mejusthot Před rokem +1

I've been in increasing pain over many years and for me the levels of pain I'm used to are often hard to even notice if asked by say a Dr what about your pain lately? But when the pain increases where it hasn't yet been Then it is really much harder for me to tolerate That pain level for awhile Until I get used to the new level of pain. Also I've noticed in more recent times that when the pain is tolerable Sometimes if I get a typical pain like what for many people in the world a doable pain without intervention when I get this type of pain and the other Together NO I don't do well in tolerance for awhile when this happens either. But then I get used to that also, thankfully those types of pain are fleeting at least until some other pain comes along lol ... I didn't think my post would be this long and I realize I may not have explained well I get mental fatigue and brain fog as well as other communication challenges I'm fairly used to but not always clear at explaining those either heh 🤷

I love the way you make it clear that pain medication still has a place for those who need it and take it properly. So many people when they get off of them swing the other way and act like everyone should. As well as medical professionals it seem go to the extreme and think because there is abuse then we should stop prescribing all together. There needs to be a balance and every case is not the same. And you are a perfect example that not every case is the same and not every situation is the same forever. At one time you needed them and now hopefully you will be able to continue your journey away from them!! This is awesome! And it makes sense to have tried to do it at this time. I wasn't sure how it was going after the first video where you talked about it. It might be good too to talk to your pain doctor and neurologist about non opioid medications to use for the chiari headaches and migraines. That is if they pick up more to the point you need something. OTCs not touching my neck and head pain is what got me back to a neurologist. I have two RXs I can use and it's always a guess which one will work and I take pseudoephedrine daily because it keeps the pressure down around my brain. I hate being on daily medication but it's what I need right now. I hope the 2 weeks since you've posted this you've been able to stay opioid free!

    I'm so happy for you!
I've got chronic pain and am still dependant on certain pain killers, but last year I was able to come off opiate painkillers and now only use them occasionally as I need. If anyone reading this is still on painkillers, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. We have to do what our bodies need and medication is not a failure.

I agree with everything you said here, PuddingCat! I'm SO glad you were able to come off of opiate painkillers - that's something to be very proud of! But yes, exactly - there's no shame or nothing at ALL wrong with taking them. We all need to find a way to get by, and different solutions work for different people at different times!

I’m beyond stoked for you Jo, I know you may have to take each day as it comes but to get to the stage you’re at is fantastic. It must feel amazing to be present more, instead of blurry from the meds. I was lucky to come off a lot of my meds post chop but not all....yet....🤞🏻🤞🏻Coming off a lot of my meds still feels amazing as I’m more present and my liver and kidneys are functioning so much better. I also use exercise and staying creative to help managing my pain levels better. it really does help both physically and mentally. I really hope you’re able to manage better without especially on those evil migraines days (or just take for migraine days) that would be my dream too, please don’t feel bad if you do.... So so happy for you 🤗🤗🤗

Congratulations for achieving a valued personal goal! I always appreciate how you make sure you express you are not against medication. Managing chronic pain, to be as 'normal' as I can, I'm not persecuted now by the Anti-Medication Inquisition. But I certainly have been. As my former PCP well understood (from my sharing histories) well understood like other abuse survivors, "Rage is never far away.."

Congratulations!! Thats an awesome feat to conquer! I myself am 2 weeks free of all opiates & i started taking them in 2008 after suffering an injury at work that destroyed my left shoulder and I needed 3 very extensive reconstruction surgeries. I suffered with really bad neck pain and that led me to suffer from clusters of migraines (it was hard to enjoy anything in my life).....now my life is totally different and eventhough im not 100% the same prior to the injury.....im most definitely back to enjoying my life without the aide of pharmaceuticals. This video is super informative and i love the fact you were so open about ur own personal thoughts on the matter and did it with grace. Love ur smile & godspeed for the days ahead ❣🥰

Its so good to hear that you can start to come of these drugs. Same for me, not against drugs. But its great to know you dont need them any longer. Thank you for stressing that it is under medical supervision. I hope you keep doing well in the current situation (medication wise and the other stuff thats going on)
Also, as a biomedical science student; science still doesn't understand pain all that well. This is why it is important for people to understand their own body and communicate to doctors about how to manage their pain. And for those doctors to listen.

I have been on sleeping medication and strong pain meds like you for several years. I have a very painful chronic disease that leaves me in pain every moment in the day and night. I am currently in the tapering down process and it’s amazing as to how my body is working with me. The pain just seems manageable without these meds, I don’t understand how it’s possible, but it’s working! No one else understands amazing 18hrs feels without pain meds, it’s really incredible! Well done to you, long term I think you (and myself) will be so glad you made this choice to stop them!

Good for you. If it works, and the docs are working with you- go for it. Using the current situation to work this out is smart.
I have some meds I will never stop taking. I need them to keep the ticker working and the brain on track. But if I get my meds reviewed often to see if things can be trimmed.
I truly hope it continues to work for you.
