  • The 'Black Mountain Pass' or the A4069 cuts across the western corner of the Brecon Beacons. This is definitely a 'bucket list' road to ride on you're bike. A fantastic road made popular by the BBC series 'Top Gear' & named as one of the best driving roads.
This is the last episode of my 'The Cost of a 4 Day Wales Motorcycle Tour.
I really recommend if possible touring the fabulous Welsh roads.

Glad you enjoyed your trip over the mountain - they have just started installing average speed cameras up there!!!..... 4sections which kind of mess up anyone's fun...... had you turned right at llangadog and continued along the A4069, arriving at Llandovery you could have visited the Owls Nest Café, a genuine biker café with brilliant sustenance, tarmac parking, etc etc..... well worthy of a visit and the place the majority head for on days out.

    • @DazmatronMotorcycleTrips
      @DazmatronMotorcycleTrips  Před rokem +1

Hi Phil, thanks for your message albeit not great news re the average speed camera's. I wonder if, due to the nature of the bends going up & over the mountain what the average speed would be anyway??
I tend to ride to enjoy both the ride & the scenery & to my skill set.
There are slower bends & faster bends, so overall I wonder if the average speed is going to be around the 50mph & it's still as much fun anyway?
There will always be riders that want to race & I believe the average camera's put up at the A57 'Cat & Fiddle' road was as a result to the incident's of biker's crashing & fatalities. My thought's go out to the victims of those incident's but there is the fact that rider error potentially is attributable to some of these i.e. too fast.
That said, within reason, we all speed, but there is a time & place. I recall riding with a tour guide in the Spanish Mountains, after a period of assessing our riding, speaking to us as to how confident we were to push more on the mountains, we increased our speed (the roads were perfect to do this) It has been to this day one of the most exhilarating feelings I have ever had on a motorbike. So, there's a time & a place.
So we can still have fun but when conditions are right.
Of course there will always be cynical opinions to the camera's, perhaps popular biker roads become victims of their own success?
Local government record RTC's, if there is an increase in these or fatalities they have a duty to try to reduce them.
I'll still ride the Black Mountain, maybe stopping at the top for an ice-cream will interrupt the camera recording??
Regarding the A4069 & 'Owls Nest' Cafe, yeah I missed it on that occasion. I recently posted 3 vid's one was the 'Llandovery North' loop, we finished at the 'Owl's Nest' so yes I know where it is now lol, thanks' for the heads up though as I'll no doubt be stopping there again after some more awesome Welsh roads!
Sorry this reply was a bit long lol,
Ride safe Phil, thanks for your message. Daz.

@@DazmatronMotorcycleTrips thanks for your insight - most of us are sensible and can read roads, sadly there are those who ride beyond their capabilities and that's where the cameras come from - too many serious road accidents on a playground.... still for those of us who enjoy the ride - its pure heaven. Ironically I later watched your loop inc the Devils staircase, (another series of brilliants roads and your visit to Ians cafe) - Long may you ride for enjoyment for many years to come. Wow you really did have the weather! But a clear run. There are photographers (you can buy pics from) up there now most weekends.

Definitely fortunate weather wise. I met the photographer in your area who takes the bike pics after riding the Llandovery Loop. Hes called 'Tog on Two Wheels', a nice chap.
My buddy told me about the cameras, when I toured with him it was ideal as he knew where all the cameras were which was ideal. Did you see in one part of the Alps they banned motorbikes during certain times because of the noise 😱

@DazmatronMotorcycleTrips not yet. I have heard of such, with risk of avalanche I guess the problem is real.
I'm hoping to do a few ride's with my daughter this summer (she's started holidays). So may try and fit in a ride through the black mountain. I better refresh my memory first and see what the cameras are like. First time I rode it was in torrential rain, with a couple of friends. 🤣
      Ride safe, LJ

Hi there, loving the videos! We're located in West Yorkshire and planning on a tour of Wales this coming summer, so these are very helpful for both planning and budgeting. Are you on your own on this trip, as I notice you have some shots of you taken by someone else? Thanks again

Hi George that's great confirmation the vids have helped u plan ahead somewhat. I was a lone rider so did all the shots myself. I kept the camera rolling when I got off the bike, rode ahead & placed the camera to then ride past it (bit of a polarva 🙄). Eric the ice cream man was the only person to hold the camera for me 😆. You'll have a great trip, I must say it was nice sleeping in the AirB&B after a rubbish nights kip on the camp site. The campsite was obviously cheaper so its good to mix it up a bit. Have a great tour George 👍
